Title: Backstop Question
Post by: TheBigRedArcher on November 03, 2014, 04:28:00 PM
I accidentally post this question in the shooters forum.

I am trying to make it so that I can shoot more in the back yard and get my son into the sport. Ilike the idea of "The Wall" back stop, but the cost is a bit out of the question. Besides carpet, what has anyone used? do ya'll think the mesh contractor tarps, if doubled or tripled over would work? I don't what myself or my son to hit the neighbors dog...maybe the cat but not the dog.

I use a horse stall mat. You can catch them on sale sometimes for about $30.

The horse stall mat is my primary backstop. I need something bit bigger to put the wifes nerves at ease.

I have half a stall mat in my shop to back up my bag for shooting at fairly close range. Outdoors, I had three layers of carpet hanging from a wood frame, hinged on one end to a retaining wall and the other end with a wheel on it so I could swing it out of the way. Never looked farther than the carpeting because
   a. It worked so well.
   b. was throw away stuff that cost me nothing.

Based on the hole in my shop door, I would not recomend OSB sheeting.

I kind of stage it.  First, of course I have the target, which is what I'm supposed to be hitting.  Then, I have maybe a 3' X 3' piece of foam or old shot-out target behind that, something that is easy to pull the arrows out of.  Then, I have as big a piece (or pieces) of plywood as I think I might need to catch any possible arrow that might miss or deflect from the target.  Of course, if the arrow actually reaches the plywood, then I have a bit of a job getting it out, but that serves me right, don't you think?

A horse stall mat has served me well.

If you have access to them conveyor ?sp belts work great. Any mining operation should have alot of old belt.
