I just received a dozen Gold tip trads and they recomend a specific type of glue? they say not to use hot melt. Is this a sales pitch to sell gold tip glue, or is it legit?
Any one with real world experiance with these arrows please let me know what you found.
Thanks,
Red

I've never heard that, but I use the heck out of Big Jim's hot melt glue and never had a problem.

I use JB Weld on my GT inserts. I tried hot melt and lost a few tips and inserts when it failed.

Big Jim's low temp glue, clean shaft with qtip and alcohol. Just switched to this glue and it works great. You do not not need a lot of heat to melt it. I use a candle. Don't heat your insert much. Call him he will walk you through it. Bought mine at Denton. Good luck.

I use the Gold Tip- Tip Grip glue on my brass inserts. Best glue I have ever used for inserts. It really does work for inserts.

I also have had real good luck with Gorilla glue super glue.

BigJim hot melt is what I use. Haven't had an inset pull out yet.

All I shoot is Gold Tip XT Hunter black shafts, and all I use for inserts is the Quick Stick hot melt glue from Big Jims. Never had any issue!

Nearly all my arrows are GTs and I'm constantly playing with length, weight, etc. I use hot melt glue and have never had it fail. I'm wondering if that advice from GT is to prevent heavy handed guys from heating the shaft too hot and creating a possible liability?
I use a propane torch turned way down to where it will just stay lit. I heat the point slowly until the insert finally frees up and out it comes. That stops the heat to the shaft once the point and insert come out. I've never had a shaft fail at the tip.

Big Jim's the way to go. Go on his page and watch the video he does on the glue.

I have never had an issue with Big Jims glue.

Thanks for all the replies!

Funny...ironic, I tried hot melt and was constantly losing tips/inserts. Now use super glue or JB Weld epoxy. Good luck, Scott.

Bladepeek nailed it. G/T doesn't want customers compromising integrity by overheating. I always heat my tips a little and pull while doing so with no issues. Hot melt is my fav.

Big Jim's hot melt, good stuff!

Gorilla glue impact tough. Blue lid available at the big home store. Never had an insert come out.

There are those who don't ever loose inserts and they use "***" kind of glue. Why are they successful and others aren't? I can't say.
What I can say is not all hot melt is created equal. Yes, there are other types that will probably work just as well, but I can't say until it is tried and proven to be good or bad...by then you will be plenty frustrated.
We have been very successful with the quick stick that we choose to use several thousand times a year. Just don't use any more heat than necessary and never apply heat to the shaft.
Last year we sold over 4000 dz GT's and if you requested us to install inserts, we used our quick stick...No, we didn't clean the shaft. If there was an issue, we were never informed of one...not that came back to me at least.
When we used the Gold Tip tip grip, we would get dozens of calls a year and back then we did clean shafts before installing inserts.
Thanks ya'll, BigJim

this. blue top Gorilla glue. works great. if you need to pull one out, screw on a field point, apply a little heat to it with a candle, and pull it out with pliers.

I have not tried Big Jims glue yet, it is on my to do list. I use golf shaft epoxy from Golfsmith. It is made to take shock. It does have a serious drawback, not reversable. For tuning I glue up point end of shaft. If I need to cut shaft I do it from nock end.

Use regular low / dual temp hot glue sticks from any store. That is what I use and it works better then any glues I tried. Plus you can get a bag with a lifetime supply for a few dollars.

I am sure there are several glues that will work. However when I started using Gold Tip shafts many years ago, I also started using GT glue. I have never had an insert pull out. It might be a sales gimic, but the manufacture knows what works on their arrows.
Do you want to put Chevy parts on your Dodge? Go with the manufacture's recommendation and all will be well.
Just my opinion

I just lost an insert that was put in with GT Glue. It was put together by my brother. I shot three arrows at my neighbors target. One still had the GT Glue and the other two had already come loose and been glued with hot glue stick.
Unbeknown to me, the target was made with a few layers of cardboard and then plywood behind that. The arrows went deep into the plywood and only one came out, the last insert that had been glued with GT. So I dug out the insert and reinstalled it with hot glue stick. And it is still in place.
I do not know if this was because my brother used too little or too much, or it was from the impact into the plywood, but I do know that none of the three inserts stayed in with the GT Glue. I have yet to loose one with hot glue though.
Maybe this is because I am shooting in sub zero weather and the GT Glue gets more brittle then the hot glue? I don't know. I would be curious what others think about this.

It's always a possibility a point will pull out with hot melt on any shaft. Small price to pay versus epoxying in your points and buying new shafts when u want to try something new. Rough insides with rolled up sand paper, clean well with acetone and a Q-tip, hot melt them and go. :jumper:
