Title: Pheasant hunt point suggestions
Post by: Sawpilot 75 on January 25, 2015, 11:14:00 AM
I am going to be hunting some pheasants with Flu Flu's here soon but never tried it before. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what a good point is? I was thinking judo?

I know some guys use judo's, and some use the tips with the snaring type wire loops which tangle up around the bird, sorry I don't know which is better.

I did not like judos or snaros because they bounce off and do not stick in the bird.

If using dogs (most guys who own a dog will have a fit if you try to use broadheads) I prefer field points. The arrow will stick in the bird and bring it to the ground, and the dog and you can go get it.

If no dogs, then use broadheads!

I have found big dulled down broadheads to work far better than anything else I have tried.  Alot depends on if dogs are being used and how much control and concern the dogs owners have.

If there are dogs, I'd use field tips. If not, old broadheads.

I would think that even with a field point, it would be good to dull it down for the safety of the dog. Years back, guys were using bludgeons. A solid could bring pheasants down hard, but anything less they were not so predictable. If your bow has enough power, a steel blunt will work, but nothing is as good as free three blade broadheads. My last one was with a wore down Hill. The pheasant went down and died quickly, but the arrow is hiding somewhere in a brushy Iowa creek bottom, a case of too much penetration, hopefully point down and in the dirt.

Thanks guys. There will be dogs so probably try judo's or field points.
