For those who know/knew Ed Pitchkites and the Anniversary Hunt article that appeared in Traditional Bowhunter in Dec/Jan 2014. I have some sad news to report. Ed passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015.
He had made many friends during his lifetime, and those he met that shared his passion for traditional bowhunting know how dedicated he was to the sport.
To those who knew him, met him, corresponded with him.....thank you. It meant a lot to him.
I am his sister. I will miss his place in this world very much. He was one of a kind.

Prayers for family and his many friends.
I sent him a Christmas card a few years back and also asked about the book he had written(60 Years with the Feathered Shaft). A short time latter I received his book and a dream catcher he made asking for no payment. It was 2 years latter when by chance my son and I ran into him at Cloverdale Indiana. I've never met a nicer person. He took the time to talk to us and gave my son a dream catcher he had made. He also had some extras he had made and was giving them out to kids he met. What a fine gentleman and he will be truly missed. Also , I enjoyed reading the book very much. It is out of print , but if you can find one, it is a good read.

Sorry to hear this. I have at least 3 of Ed's dream catcher type hangings on my wall. Each with it's own story.
Was thinking of him just a couple of days ago wondering if he got to hunt this last season.
Had pleasure corresponding with him.

Ed was an AWESOME man. One I considered a friend. Spoke with Ed several times on the phone, although he liked to write more. A real pioneer. Rest in peace my friend. God bless

Thank you, Joyce, for sharing this!
I am shedding tears at this moment. Your brother touched so many, including my wife Lisa and I!
His integrity and love of archery, and especially his family, was his passions for sure! And he spoke highly of all them when you were in his prescence!
God bless you and your family for sharing him!

I'll really miss Ed at Cloverdale, also will miss his letters and tapes. One of a kind, and I doubt we will see another like him.

I'm going to read Ed's book again this week.
A true Gentleman.

Joyce,
I only met Ed several times, the first few being at the Clinton,Indiana shoots back in the 70s. The last was a wonderful few hours huddling under a tarp very late on a miserable rainy night at Marshall, Michigan, sometime in the 1980s, with Ed and Jay Massey. We talked of so many things, and I'm sorry to say I can't remember one! But, the night will stay with me as long as I live-it is one of my most treasured memories of all these years in archery.
I had been up about 1 AM adjusting my tarps to keep as much rain as possible off my broadhead collection, and two figures came leapfrogging from tarp to tarp to avoid being drenched. When they came to mine and we recognized each other, we began telling stories. Three hours or so later, they ran off through the rain again. Although I knew them before, I am blessed to have had those several hours with those two men. Sure, I wish now I'd have explored ways to get to know them better. But, I didn't, and a life is full of lost opportunities....and a few that turned out to be magic. At this time, I choose to remember two guys that made one late night very memorable for me. God rest their souls.

Condolences to his family, may you find peace in the memories.

Sorry to hear Ed is gone and sorry for your loss. The last time I saw him at Cloverdale was right after he wrote his book. I told him I wanted to buy a book. He responded "I'll sell you a book but I have to go to the car and get one, and I won't autograph it" He was only joking and autographed the book. He also gave me one of his dream catcher arrowheads. He was one of a kind, God broke the mold when he made Ed Pitchkites.

My thoughts and prayers for Ed and family

I am saddened deeply to hear of Ed's passing.
Several years ago his book got passed around to be read along with a small notebook in which your thoughts could be added, with the notebook being sent to Ed after his book had been read.
Your brother was kind enough to send me some homemade dreamcatchers,an autographed book, and two cassettes with his stories recorded onto them. I had the pleasure of talking with Ed on the phone which was an enormous pleasure.
-
What a man, have a bunch of cd's and a few cassettes tapes Ed would send with his wit and wisdom, big loss for all that new him and "trad" bowhunting camp.Thoughts and prayers to his family!
He will be missed but not forgotten.
-
I sent Ed a card once at the request from another TG'er and Ed was kind enough to send me a copy of his book some cassette tapes and a handmade dream catcher.
I was going through some things a couple of weeks ago and ran across his book. I wondered how he was. I wish I had contacted him before his passing. I always wanted to meet Ed in person and thank him.
So sorry for the loss of your Brother. The Traditional Archery community will miss him.

Joyce, I am very sorry to hear the news... AND for your loss!
I really enjoyed and appreciated the hours I spent with Ed over the years and the correspondence we traded.
Jerry Pierce introduced me to Ed at Cloverdale about 20 years ago. I'd love to think that they are enjoying a campfire or a bow-and-arrow squirrel hunt together somewhere.
Thanks so much for letting us know.
RIP, my friend!

Traxx, I didn't know him, and sad to say, I didn't know of him but, from what is written hear that is really too bad for me. I will make it a point to try and find his writings and , also from what is written here if we're both good and do the right thing, we'll both get to meet him but, yet again hopefully not for many, many years.
Rest in peace, condolences to the family and his friends.

Joyce, so very sorry to hear of your loss.
I did not have the privilege of knowing Ed, but when I read his name it struck a chord somewhere in my memory of seeing a picture of him in Jay Massey's book "The Bowyer's Craft." After searching through my copy I found on page 142 a great photo of Ed shooting his longbow. In the chapter that follows Jay speaks highly of Ed's skill with the longbow. That photo and Jay's praise for Ed have stuck with me for 25 years now.
Please accept my most sincere condolences.
Rest in peace, Ed!

My condolences to you for your loss. I had not heard of Ed before your post, but from the responses I fear that is my loss, one that I hope to change.
My Prayers are with you.

Ed was a great man that did a lot for traditional archery. I have one of his dream catchers that he gave me hanging above my work bench in my shop. That reminds me of him everyday while I'm working on bows.
