Title: Youth draw length and age????
Post by: BigJim on February 08, 2015, 07:54:00 AM
Hey guys, need some help here.
I have a chance to purchase some very reasonable youth arrows and wondering what draw length your little guys/gals are.

traditionally the youth arrows are 26" but most youth don't come close to 23"s

The arrows in question would be 23"s but very nice and durable...and affordable if I were to buy an incredible amount.

If you have youth or grand youth, what age are they and what is their draw length. This would be helpful and maybe persuade me in either direction.
thanks, BigJim

My son is 7 years old and draws his bow to 16 1/2 give or take a little.

Maybe for a child you know and have trained, buying arrows close to the child's draw length would be a good idea.  I teach youth archery classes, and we make sure that all the arrows offered are at least 3-4" longer than the maximum draw length we expect, as a safety measure.  Children get exuberant and do unpredictable things, like overdrawing the bow and jamming the arrow into the belly of the riser (or worse, their hands).  Even my own grandson did that once, and I thought he knew better!  Fortunately, I was at his side when it happened, and was able to grab the bow and the string as the arrow was bowing out to the side, and he was standing there with a look on his face like, "What do I do now, grandpa?"

That is what I was hoping to hear...that the kids up to and exceeding 10 years of age could shoot a 3" arrow.
I am not concerned as to how well they are matched to the bow as they could never be proper in tune...but the kids don't need tuned or care. The big advantage is going to be that they are light enough for the light bows and the points will stick well in to the targets. On top of that they will be very strong and reasonably priced for such a good arrow.

thanks, bigjim

Big Jim, I completely agree with what you said about the advantages of these arrows I have noticed that nothing causes my son to lose interest faster than his arrows not sticking in the targets. He doesn't understand why Dad's stick and his don't and gets frustrated not being able to see where exactly he hit the target.

Agree with above, my son is 10 and he draws 21" but i get him the carbon express predator 2's in 800-900 spine and leave them full length.

jim, i have 3 newphews(9,8,6) that i'l get them to measure when i get home.  I know the main problem with them is they like to draw it back to their ear for the extra "power". haha.

Last summer I picked up some Doug Fir shafts at an event, and they were 5/16", 24" long, and already tapered for nock and point...and plenty cheap too.

I added 70 gr. heads and my 8-10 year old grandsons love'em.  The total weight was about 360 gr. and they stuck in the target.
