Title: refinishing? Kmag
Post by: sheepdogreno on February 13, 2015, 03:13:00 PM
I'm looking at this Kodiak magnum as a trade deal.it appears to be in good shape seller says it has been fine sanded. It has some drilled holes in the riser.is this a difficult task to finish to a respectable condition?

Depending upon your skills it can be done. The hole's will be the biggest challenge. Something looks odd with the shelf area. Part of the over-lays appear to be missing, could be the way the light is hitting it. No coin ? Don't know about the condition of the tips, but the limbs look good. Fill the hole's, a lot of sanding, three to five thin coats of Tru-oil or wipe on Poly, it will look sharp.

That one had a raised Bear "button" coin. (1972 +)It will fill one of the holes. The raised coins show up on the big auction sites sometimes.

Bow will clean up fine.

Thanks for the tips.I didn't notice the coin missing and I also thought then shelf looked odd. Kinda looks like there's a thin piece of material stuck on it

If the limbs have been sanded how do I bring them back? I understand the process somewhat for the wood riser

I have no idea, I've been looking for a project like this myself. Did you make the trade?

its in the process...after talking more with the person trading me he said he would finish the bow and send me pics before we trade. he started to refinish it with no plans on using the bow only because he enjoys refinishing. trading some bowfishing stuff with value of about 150 bucks so if it turns out decent I think its a pretty good trade

Tony is right. That year used the raised button (coin). Hard to tell, but you might be able to cover both those lower holes with it. You would still have to fill them up to keep moisture out. I'm not sure what you mean by "bringing back the limbs". You're final sanding will be with 400 or 600 paper. Wipe the bow down and apply the first coat of finish.

Well just to update.the gentleman who is trading me sent me some pics of the bow after he did a simple refinish on it .he offered for part of the trade to make it presentable so it's not the best refinish job but I'm planning on using it as another bowfishing rig anyway. I will def shoot some arrows out of it tho. I have always wanted an old bear so if I like this one I might just be looking for one that's in better shape. He did not fill the holes so I'm guessing I'll fill them with some loctite 420 and move on. Im excited to get and shoot this mag as I've never shot one before!

Here's some pics after a light finish job. After talking to him the 2small holes in the riser have inserts In them for a quikee quiver. There are also the classic drilled holes for a site.this should be a fish killing machine!

My opinion ? I'd find another K-Mag. I wasn't aware there were more hole's. Five holes are a lot. The auction site is full of K-Mags. I'm not sure the value of your trade, but if it's more than 50-75 bucks, I wouldn't bother.

Uh oh...my own fault for not doing enough research... I've already shipped my trade. I traded a used PSE kingfisher and a used ams reel. Both were in good working condition but used exclusively for fishing. I used the ams reel a cpl years and this was my second kingfisher.first one had bent up limb.  I valued the 2 around 150bucks which may have been slightly high on my end. Well see for sure what the kmag looks like when it gets here. I was planning on this kmag being my new fishing rig. Wanted a shorter bow for making shooting over the rail on the bowfishing deck a little easier.

I'd gladly trade a PSE Kingfisher for a K-Mag....holes and all.

This is my hope! I've killed a lot of fish with a kingfisher but some nights its aggravating to have a 60in bow in the Boat. After two kingfisher's the past 3 yrs its time for new stickin rig

Nice looking pair! You did fine. I love my '65 K-Mag. I plan to do a little turkey hunting with it come spring.
