My buddy Kent is on his quest for a world slam of turkeys with the recurve. He now only has the Goulds!! I didn't get the details as Kent is still in Mexico where he killed his Oscellated Turkey. I've hunted Osceolas with Kent at True South Adventures. He is a true turkey nut!! I believe that he's done the US slam 3X's with his recurve.
For those of you that are unfamiliar with the Oscellated Turkey, it is found primarily on the Yucatan Peninsula of southern Mexico. The NWTF have them listed as one of the species to make the "World" Grand Slam for turkeys, which would also include the Eastern, the Merriams, the Rio Grand and the Gould's which is also found in Mexico. Neither Hens nor Toms have beards, and the Tom does not gobble as with the other subspecies.
This is a true trophy with the stick and string.

You're awesome, Sean, and thank you, my friend! I've said it before, and it's true, that Sean has forgotten more about turkeys and calling than I will ever know!! I've just been very lucky, fortunate and blessed. The hunt took place in the Yucatan, about a 2hr. drive from Campeche, Mexico. We hunted primarily on leased land from the Mennonite community, which accumulated to about 4000 acres of "bow only". The birds frequent the edges where low jungle meets crop land (mostly sorghum crops). Most hunting consisted of putting the birds to bed, building a blind w/machetes and trying to intercept them in the AM.

I saw many birds, some in flocks of 30 or more. My guide spoke almost zero English (about the same amount of Spanish spoken by myself! Lol!) so most communication was done by gestures and acting. The hens are not easily distinguished from the toms, so I'd hear him whispering, "Seniorita" or "Hombre" as the birds would work in our direction. I was the very first trad shooter that the camp/guides had ever seen and they had lots of questions about "how far ??". I would just remark, "As close as possible!" ;) My shot ended up being about 14 yards w/the tom weighing in at a whopping 11lbs 7ozs. The birds are much smaller than "ours" and mine was the largest taken during the week w/most being 8-9lbs.

If anyone would like any addn. info. I'd, of course, be happy to share..just PM me or call (920)533-5480. I saw many, many other interesting critters from snakes to birds to rodents and even many puma tracks! Overall, a really fantastic trip and quite an experience. A sincere thanks to all for the comments and interest!
-
That's awesome brother!!! Congratulations!! What bow were you using??
-
That is just flat out awesome.
-
Gracias, mi amigo! I was shooting a 1 piece Bruin 'curve (Carbon Express model) at just over 50lbs.

They are actually 1 1/2" spurs, but, how does the expression(aka lie) go..???.."Size doesn't matter". Lmao!! In fact, they apparently take a few true 2" birds every year. Muy Grande !!
