Ron, my wife Lori, and I attended the Michigan Longbow association banquet tonight, and got the awesome surprise of our mentor Ron being presented with the MLA Legend Award. They gave him a beautiful Bark River knife engraved with his name and the award.....awesome Ron! Thanks for making Traditional Archery your LIFE. You have contributed to my enjoyment of the sport in so many ways. Thanks buddy. :clapper:

Thank you all for your congratulations. It was a surprising honor and a humbling experience.
Many of you that have known me for many years probably realized that someone was missing in last night's ceremony. My wife Nancy who has always been at my side could not be there to share the honor with me. Over the years she has worked as hard as I to promote traditional archery and the MLA. Nancy was the person that named the "Great Lakes Longbow Invitational"
She loves her longbow and has been my bow hunting partner ever since we have been married. Some years ago Nancy was diagnosed with Parkinson. It is a progressives disease with no cure and for her it has reached the point where she can no longer shoot her bow or attend functions such as last nights banquet.
I enjoyed the event last night, seeing old friends and meeting new ones. I was honored to receive the award but I couldn't help but wish my partner was there to share it with me.
They say behind every man is a great woman, my wife Nancy is that great woman for me. Next Saturday, February 28th will be our 56th anniversary. :archer:
This is Nancy and I many years ago when the MLA was just getting started. We use to have snowshoe rabbit hunts near Mio Michigan in March. Nancy had gotten her feet wet in the cedar swamp and I built a fire to warm her up. She has always been a trooper.

Congratulations Ron. This community is truly blessed to have folks such as you and your wife promoting our sport, openly sharing their expertise, and being a true example of an ethical woodsman and gentleman. I'm sure that your wife is as proud of you as you are of her. Thank you for all you have done.

Thank you Bill for acknowledging my wife. There were times when there appeared to be a shadow behind me, it was really Nancy supporting me. She's been the railing on my balance beam now for many years. :archer:

Awesome Ron ! Your contributions to the sport will live long past our lives and that is something special .

Congratulations Ron for your well deserved award and my blessings to your wonderfull wife Nancy :clapper:

Some of you may have seen the arrows Paul Jalon makes for Ron on Ron's website named after Nancy's nickname of "Redbird" . Well another lesser known but just as fitting tribute to Nancy is the road sign that hangs at the entrance two track to the Shrewhaven cabin. It's appropriately named Redbird Lane.

Thanks for sharing that Ray,
A heartwarming gesture by a loving husband.

Congratulations Ron! A well-deserved award, you and Nancy paved the way with your passion to help mold the traditional community in MI!
My uncle bought me my first bow at 15 yrs old, and he got the arrows for it from you in the late 80's, I still have the box. He l holds beliefs about shooting the longbow that you told him all that time ago.
On top of that, selfishly I've enjoyed shooting a few 3D rounds with you these past couple years!
Thanks for all you've contributed.

Congratulations old hoss! We only met one time and that was up in Michigan and the Great Lakes Invitational. You were sitting on the tail-gate of a station wagon swappin lies with Jay Massy and enjoying a thirst quencher, I was packing a jug of some cheap red wine. It was quite the night and one I'll not soon forget.
Thanks for being the man you are.
-
Way to go well deserved for sure Ron is a legend and first class all the way. Widow

Congrats Mr. LaClair.
-
Thank you Charlie. I know for men of our age memories sometimes blend in and get a little fuzzy. I do remember that night with Jay at the GLLI in Michigan, sitting on a pickup tailgate. Jay was a great man and I still miss him.
Didn't you and I also sit together for awhile near the rib barbecue grill at Cloverdale years ago?

Way to go Ron..!!!!:-D

It was an honor to be the one to give it to you Ron and thank you for spending the evening with us. As I said when presenting the award, you were my link to the MLA early on when I was researching this wonderful past-time and it had a tremendous impact on me. We will continue to keep the campfire lit. I hope to see you soon!

I started in Trad Archry back in 94 when I got out of the Navy. Well being a Michigander, I had called Ron, and had him send me a brochure. I did some research and found out he was the "bee's knees" when it came to Trad Archery. Anyways, was in college and was married with a son so didn't have much money at the time. So I showed my wife a cheaper recurve he was selling as a possible Christmas gift. On Christmas morning, I open my gift, and it's a ambidextrous Shrew...was I shocked. Apparently, Ron had sold the one he was going to send her, so instead he sent her the Shrew. She had told him no worries, but he wanted to make sure I received my gift on Christmas. Top notch individual. I could kick myself in the rear for selling that bow. Thanks again Ron.
-
Congratulations on your award.
Although I have personally never met Ron, only followed along on the Shrewhaven threads posted on this site. His sincerity and genuine character comes thru in his postings.
The traditional archery community has quite a few stand-up individuals, none more so than Ron LaClair
I sincerely pray you and Nancy have many more happy days together.

Ron... I know what you mean about fuzzy memories and thanks for the gentle nudge about Cloverdale. I think you are right about that. It's been too long.

Well done Sir Ron of the Longbow, a truly well-deserved and overdue award! May God continue to shine on you and your family and may your legacy live on through the lives of everyone whom you have touched over the years!

Very fitting and a well deserved honor. Congrats Ron!!
I remember my summers growing up going to an outdoor fair every summer that was held in Houghton Lake Michigan at the high school. It was a yearly summer vacation for my family when I was a young kid. Every year Ron and Norm Blaker would do longbow demonstrations. My dad has always shot traditional archery and so have I. It was a real treat to see what was possible with a stick and string. I grew up idolizing Ron and Norm and I'm glad that I've gotten to know Ron in the last 10 years or so.

Ron congratulations on your deserving award from the MLA.
Your tribute to Nancy is very touching and well deserving.. Wishing you both a happy 56 th . :clapper:
