Title: those African camping trailers...
Post by: Russ Clagett on February 22, 2015, 10:44:00 PM
Years ago I remember reading about those amazing camping trailers that were used by the African Army..I think.

Anyway they were tow behind and simply amazing...anybody use them or know where they can be found...?

Africans and Australians have the coolest hunting campers! They also have a great selection of them.Unfortunately with customs and all they are incredibly expensive to get them shipped here.So much so that it is not feasible.Zipper Mfg. is working on an off road capable hunting camper. It will be perfect for hunting trips. The prototype is being built right now. There will be NO tent material in this camper.

Check out Expedition Portal for some links to available trailers in US...  I have a friend who is from South Africa and imports them...he is here in Charleston if anyone is interested just shoot a PM.  They are big in the Land Cruiser and Land Rover communities...both the trailers and the roof top tents (RTT).

Yes, I am a Land Cruiser guy...hahaha

Not a trailer but I'm on my second vehicle with a "Flip Pac" camper shell. Lots of people want one after they see one...Tom.

Yes!!! that's it!!!

By the way, I'm sorry I didn't initially start this out as being tied to trad bowhunting....it is of course...

I just retired from active duty Army, and after SO many years of carrying heavy stuff and sleeping on the ground in all kinds of conditions (mostly bad)I now have the luxury of doing something different...and I intend to.

I remember a thread about these a few years ago and wanted to bring that back up so I could explore some options.

My apologies for not starting the thread out the right way.

But that's it! Is it called conqueror is that a name you gave it Terry? Like nose art, but for your camper..?

This is a friend of mine's trailer. We camped a few days in it a couple of years ago and it was very comfortable and easy to set up. That sloped part was a sleeping quarters in addition to the rear part. The front of the unit just folded out and when folded in you had a very large platform to haul gear, coolers, etc. John, hope you don't mind me showing your trailer. Terry, the site should look familiar.

Russ,

Do not know if you can find one of the Aussie ones like Terry has, but Moby 1 makes similar ones but man they are pricy, $18,000. Other makers in the U.S. also around the same price.

Hi Danny....yeah...18k is gonna be too much..

I like the idea a lot and it would be great for the hunting I do so I need to get creative.

Most of the trailers I see either have everything and cost way more than I have, or they lack something like sleeping quarters...so I need to look around and see how I can make one work.

Anyone use a teardrop type?

I had the tent type trailers for a few years ago and they worked ok. I now use an older regular hard side trailer I picked up for $1500, fixed it up the way I wanted it. Puts some racks on it, flipped the axials for alot better ground clearence etc... So much nicer! handles the weather better, plenty of room. Can cook, go to the bathroom etc inside if need be. It is a great base camp and alot cheaper to do than some of the fancy rigs and there isnt alot of places I cant drag it into.

The one I have came from South Africa.  They imported a bunch of them...bought the time the economy tanked....I got a deal on mine because of it.  I think they only had 6 left in the country at the time.

Have you looked into Flip Pac made by Six Pac?  The top of your cab height shell flips open like a suit case and instantly provides a full size bed and another for kids. Just as fast to hing closed and you are on the road. Can use the bed of the truck for all your stuff, including built in stove, refrigerator, storage  and seating. Does not cost anywhere near $18,000.  I think it is about $6,000.  They have one to fit any size truck bed.

Unfortunately adventure trailers jacked the price up. Hoping that Six Pac gets back in business and returns to manufacturing these. They are great units for hunters and outdoorsmen and have a cult-like following. If one is patient, can find them on craigslist. Scott

That jumping jack is a great idea....the tent is in the bottom and everything else goes tied down on top....and the best part is you get to sleep up off the ground....

Yes...on my Safari...everything goes on top.  I have a pic somewhere I'll try and post. Boat...tree stands....coolers....feeders...chairs...all sorts of stuff can be lashed to the top.

$8000 for mine....they were 12,000....but make no mistake, they are over built and I'll try to list everything they came with when I get time.  There were for long term excursions into the brush...and even come with a wine cellar.  Nope, not kidding.

Articulating hitch, truck canting one way, camper canting the other.  Nose cone storage with lid prop, huge battery in nose cone....mounted lights front and back, movable lights that mount on safari rack bars where you want them...electric outlets....plug in for generator....2-20 gallon tanks for potable water and spicketts on both sides of trailer....pull out table under safari rack....swing out cabinets for items that come with camper(forks, spoons, knives, ladle, spatula, steak knives, carving knife, BBQ fork, can opener, coffee mugs, classes, plates, pots n pans, bowls, and heck if I can remember it all)...HUGH main storage accessible from the rear and the top, shovel, blade axe/sling blade, latter, electric panel, shower spicket run by electricity from water tank.  8x8 Dome Tent, drop down tent....25 foot perimeter canopy, and two jerry can gas tanks.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something.  I'll see if I can find the 'loaded' pic.

Terry...holy shiznet....that's amazing...it's all you ever need...

Any idea why we don't see many of them here? I'm looking but don't see where they are available..maybe I'm just not looking in the right place but it seems hard to find.

That's a smoking deal for 8 grand if you spend much time in the woods...

Several manufactures of adventure style trailers in the USA....check the off road 4X4 forums and such....hard sided off road tear drops are available too....could have a way back country hunting set up with all kinds of  options...even solar power if yea want....lots of prices from mild to over the top....cool rigs none the less....

After looking at these trailers for the last couple days there is a large variety of them out there...

some are awesome for kitchen setup, others are great for sleeping quarters, but I'm not finding both...yet.

And some of these trailers cost as much as a new truck....

Oh, and a track for a pull our fridge. Utensil cabinets expand out for large prep table. (see pic again) Canopy allows you to cook and enjoy being outside in the rain instead of couped up in a tent all day.  4
wolf pack slide out latchable containers. Just some things to thing about.

Sleeping quarters no problem with Safari...air mattresses fit into tents nicely.

Problem is finding one...but if you could, you would probably find it at a deal.

How much are you wanting to pay?

Checked out the Turtle Trailers....they look really nice, but are fancier than what I need. Basically what I'm interested in is a trailer that is quick and easy to set up/take down with sleeping quarters and plenty of gear/game storage. I'm really not interested in hot water or electrical hookups.
Any other suggestions?

Buy an enclosed cargo trailer and build it to suit.

I'm starting to think 4dogs might have the best plan...

For what these awesome trailers cost I could buy a cargo trailer and do some work to it and possible save several thousand dollars...and maybe go on some hunts...?

Why Terry....is yours for sale...?

Cool thread! I was traveling to Ohio to bow hunt last fall and saw a Sylvan trailer! Looked pretty neat, just another option. I'm presently really considered what 4 dogs recommended. But at the same I'm REALLY curious to see what Zipper has in the works! Reread Zippers post "There will be NO tent material in this camper"! I'm mostly interested in the last two options! Why? Because I always have to laugh at the pictures of camping tents in adds! Heck in the weather they show most tents in  I'd prefer to sleep outside. LOL When it gets nasty outside and it always seems to happen on my camping trips, I don't like folding down wet nylon, canvas etc on top of all my mattresses camping gear to head home or waiting till the wind blown rain or snow dies down to cook dinner. Just my thoughts.
MY ideal set up right now in my mind would be enclosed cargo trailer converted to a camper built by me to my specs. Basically just sleeping quarters with storage.  BUT WITH a sil nylon floorless enclosure addition on the rear WITH A WOOD BURNER! Some place to get totally out of the wind and  weather to dry clothes, cook, but not intended to burn all night! For me that would be the perfect compact camper. Just think you come in from a long days hunt covered in snow or wet from rain wearing your boots into floorless enclosure. Fire up the wood burner. Dry clothes out while your cooking dinner the whole time heating up your "bunk house" (enclosed trailer)! Actually I do this now with my current tent setup (no trailer) but that's another story. But I'm really curious to see what Zipper has in the works!

I should day...everything extra....tents, rain fly, and 25 foot canopy with poles, stakes, and ropes all fold up inside cargo rack when folded over for travel.

See the boat pic...all canvas is under the safari rack....not on top under the boat.

Its amazing how many folks will stop and look, take pics, or get out and ask for a 'tour' if you camp in a public place.

Thought I had a better picture of my tarp wall tent on photo bucket but I guess this is as good as it gets. If you look you can see chimney extending from the top. It's floorless and I have a tent cot in back end. It gets too DANG hot if your not careful in their with just squaw wood. Lots of great times with this simple tarp tent even just last year. It's totally made from tarps and misc stuff you can buy at Lowes for about $50 not including the wood burner. Can you imagine this tarp tent made out of sly nylon mated up to the back of a enclosed cargo trailer bunk house? Think Kifari mated to a cargo trailer. Love my current tent setup  but I would also love to trailer to some setups!
Once again guilty as charged in this picture the  weather is great and I'd just as soon slept in my tent hammock. But I use to have some pics of normal for me foul weather, meaning snow, rain, sleet pics and the tarp tent has worked awesome!
Hint  to Zipper think about incorporating a wood burner in a closed sil nlyon addition and you can retire from bow building! Just saying! You just have to build me the test pro type to field test! By the way bow in pic is from a homemade bow copied off a original Bob Thompson Zipper but slightly changed. But I've never ever sold a single bow and never will sell one.

What is sil nylon?

Some cool setups. Already have a 6 x 10 cargo trailer so figuring on using that for my needs. Back issues in my case require more support/cmomfort.

It is nylon fabric (like rip stop) that has a rubbery silicon layer on it to waterproof it.

This is going to be my plan.  Went from tent, to cargo trailer, to toy hauler.  I am going to go back to a cargo trailer if I cannot find an appropriate toy hauler.

I will modify as needed.  Propane lines are easy to run.  A single light/battery and portable water tanks.

It sure is nice to have hard sides when that pe sky white stuff shows up.

Kelly it works great. Commercial tents made with sil nylon use a sew in roof jack. On my tarp tent I used one of those high temp flexible cookie sheet liners. I used thin aluminum flat strips to sandwich it to the tarp cutting out the tarp and leaving the high temp flexible liner as it's replacement. I pop pivoted the aluminum strips to make like a flat window frame. The very top is bent at a 45 to hang over my top conduit tent rafter. I just cut a hole big enough the stove pipe slides through. It works great. I've had the stove pipe cherry red many times with zero problems.

My original intent was to position my tarp tent so my 3 season tent would be opened into the tarp tents rear wall. However in the design stages my old age and sleeping on the ground stage decided a tent cot would fit along the back wall just fine. I love this setup and put it up by myself and hunt several days a year in it. But lately I think a cargo trailer with a wood heated "tarp" addition would be the berries!

It's great to have a place out of the weather to cook, dry clothes all the while warming up the sleeping quarters so you have a nice warm bag to crawl into! I don't burn the fire all night to be honest it's a battle not to over fire it and get it to dang HOT inside there. It warms it up within minutes in the morning and I can stand up and get dressed with, you guessed it warm dry clothes!
