Until this year...
Over the years, I've primarily hunted with either a three or four blade broadhead. I tried a double bevel two blade for a year, but eventually went back to a four blade.
After talking to a few highly respected bowhunters, I decided to give the single bevel a try. It's the only "type" of broadhead that I've never hunted with.
Because of the high humidity and salt air, I bought a single bevel that had an aluminum ferrule and stainless blade. Although I harvested a few animals with them this year, the blade didn't hold up as I expected.
That prompted me to look for something a little more durable. After talking to a few guys, I decided to place an order for the 200gr Cutthroats.
So far so good. They fly well, are quiet in flight and definitely easy to sharpen with the use of my KME.
I've only taken one small billy, so I can't make a decision yet on it 's durability. I do know that I'll be spending more time with it in the hills. If I can gather additional "field data", I'll be sure to write up a review on these new Cutthroats.

Here are the first few single bevel harvests with the stainless/aluminum broadhead. Unfortunately after only three animals, the tip became deformed and the edge of the blade warped. It seemed as if the twisting of the broadhead into the hard bone caused the damage to the edge of the blade. It could've been a fluke but I had a couple other issues, so I moved on to the Cutthroats.

My Cutthroats and KME. I also need to thank Ron again for walking me through the sharpening process! He's the best!!!

My first harvest with the Cutthroats. Quartering away, pass through and split a branch behind the billy. The broadhead just needed a slight touch up with the KME. As of now, my only concern is rust. We'll see what happens.

Always good info Ryan! I've been looking at the Cutthraoats as well!
-
Just ordered 6 from RMSG. Should be real killers with a 100 grain insert!!
-
Awesome Bob!
That's exactly what I'm running right now. 300grs upfront!
The Guys at RMSG are awesome people, I'm glad that Randy told me about them!
Plus the Cutthroats have an unconditional lifetime guarantee! Can't beat that!
Aloha!

Ryan I know this is off topic but what bow are you shooting in that last picture?
-
Jason, that's my Thunderhorn 3pc longbow. I switched bows because the limbs on the hoyt started to splinter.

I just bought six more the other day for me and the wife to elk hunt with this year! Had real good performance with them on my deer I took last fall!!!
-
I've got a half dozen mounted on Abowyer 35 gr titanium adapters. No chance to run one through a spring bear yet but they fly like darts and also super easy to sharpen
-
Make sure you send Tommy those hero pictures for their site!
-
Great broadhaed info, and that is a beautiful bow! :shaka:
-
Big fan of the cut throat construction and durability. I have shot them into everything but an animal.
-
Great info! Nice goats
-
Don't know anything about that broad head, looks good. My first Longbow was a Thunderhorn Heartstopper though and I loved that bow. Wish I had never got rid of it. I would love to have a three piece like that one.

They definitely seem tough! I need more time with them to tell... Thanks again for telling me about RMS Gear. They are "The Real Deal"!

Well I don't know what went wrong, Ryan get you a little Armorall and coat your broadheds and shaft also let it dry then wipe off excess, also I carry lip blam and just apply a small amount on the broadhead. This might help your routing problem..
-
Thanks for the pics of the bow Ryan. I bet those goats are good eating.

I just coat them with Vaseline but I ain't in the salt air anymore! Like the lip balm idea too!

Best luck I've had keeping rust at bay is using R.I.G. - Rust inhibiting grease. Developed originally for protecting gun finishes.

Ryan: Check out the review I did on Cutthroat broadheads on 2/26/15 (Cutthroat Broadheads- First Look).
The new prototype Cutthroat 190gr glue-on and 250gr screw-ins are currently in the mail to RMSGear. They will be tested thoroughly and modified if required before they will be available for sale. If no modifications are necessary then they will be available in about 4 weeks.
-
Oops- I meant March 25 as the date of my review of Cutthroats.

That's great news. I've been hoping for a 250gr screw in!

Nothing went wrong, I'm just concerned with rust in general due to the high humidity and salt air. Exposed steel generally rusts fairly easy in the islands.
-
Thank you for all the tips on keeping the rust at bay.
Aloha,
Ryan

Ryan Congrats on your Goats, That dish sure does look yummy.

Nice job Ryan!

Not you Ryan, I just posted before I got through writing . I think that Abowyer makes a SS head in single bevel. The ArmorAll coating is an old Wensel Bro trick for penetration . Bob

Thank you! I appreciate the insight!
Have a great weekend!

I was fortunate and had another harvest with the Cutthroats. Still not enough hunts to formulate an opinion, but I am impressed with the results so far. This nanny only made it 30 yards. Time to resharpen and reuse.

Just finished my first video. This one is in regards to broadhead flight.

Got lucky once again. This time it was a billy and he only ran about 50 yards. Complete pass through, steep shot, high on the shoulder and exited right behind the lower part of the opposite elbow. Starting to formulate some opinions about single bevels...

Ryan,
With you being so proficient, I'm surprised there are any goats left!!!!
Nice job!
God bless,
Rodd
-
Good deal!
-
Thank you Izzy!
LOL Rodd!
I've been really fortunate this season.
Last year was a total different story. I was lucky if I even saw something...
Aloha!
Ryan

Nice Goats and thanks Ryan for the info on those broadheads!
-
Congrats Ryan! Thanks for all the updates. I have some Cutthroats myself and love how sharp I can get them. I haven't shot at an animal yet though :( I have two days left of turkey season so hopefully I can get out and fill at least one of the two tags.
-
P.S. That Fusion looks great! I have FirstLite in ASAT, but have been thinking hard about Fusion...
-
You're welcome Bill!
Awesome Jon! Best of luck!
ASAT is tough to beat, but I'm really digging the Fusion. ;)
-
I think "someone" really wants me to switch to a single bevel. I've been so fortunate with these Cutthroats, I'm actually speechless... Definitely having a fortunate season.
I'm just happy that my friends and neighbors enjoy goat as much as we do!
