I've had an old '58 Kodiak "sow belly" up on a rack for quite a few years. It's a 60" 52# Maple riser and white glass back and belly.
It was pretty beat up. Quite a few vertical stress cracks, dings, dents, remnants of old paint..not pretty.
As I've been without a bow for a while, I figured it was time to get to work.
I sanded it all down.
Modified the grip just slightly...basically sanded it a bit flatter in the throat.
Filled the stress cracks with CA.
Sanded again
Checked and adjusted the limb timing a touch.
Stained the glass and the rest of the bow.
Did 7 coats of wipe on poly.
Finished with some spray spar to give a textured look.
Ordered and received a great looking and functioning string from Josh.
Stuck some hush puppies and bow hush on her..man I like that stuff.
Found that 57# tapered spruce with a 190grain tip shot well.
So I ordered up some shafts from Hildebrand and got those dressed up for hunting.
Had some 3 blade VPA's in the bin that'll do nicely.
Ends up she's a pretty sweet shooter.
I've put a few hundred shots through it now and I don't see any cracks reappearing.
Not sure how much I like the stain job I did...but it's better than bright white.
Heck I'm just happy to have a bow to shoot again.
When I was emailing Josh about the string he mentioned it being cool to get an old hunter "back in the game".
I liked the thought of that.
My camera isn't worth a darn, but here's a few pics.

I think you did a GREAT job on it.
Those old Bears are cool looking.

Well thanks Kirk.
That means something coming from a craftsman of your caliber.

Coming up in July i'm going to have photos of my new one piece Sasquatch SS. This one is going to have that old 50's & 60's recurve look to it you'd probably appreciate....
Shoot low brutha....

A new Sasquatch with a 50s/60s look :) :)
-
Looks like you may have a new hobby or side job.
-
Zradix.... Your new bow looks fantastic!!!!

That looks great! I love the older style recurve grips too. I started out with the deep, high wristsd grips and I never did learn them well enough. That bow looks classic to the max. And I agree, bringing an old bow back to glory is just top shelf. Imagine all the mojo in those old bows?

Looks great, I have a 57 with white glass, great shooting bows.
-
Nothing wrong with that! Nice job, and I like the color too.

I used aniline dyes mixed with methanol.

She looks great, very nicely done.

Thank you Gents.
It'll be good to see if I can make some meat with this one.
...wonder how many freezers it has helped stock over the years?....

Great to keep an old warrior in the game.
