I got home this morning and haven't downloaded pictures yet, but I will tonight or in the morning. As usual it was a great experience with Ryan and Magic Mike and we had a great camp with Kevin Dill, the Pippenger, Kent from TimberGhost and my brother.
I passed on a nice boar the first night and it ended up being the best bear I saw while hunting myself. I ended up shooting a beautiful old dry sow at "Shirt Sleeves". She squared at 6'2" and had no teeth and a brownish red pelt that is absolutely perfect.
I will let Kevin and Kent tell their own stories if they choose and the Pippengers were still hunting when we left.
I did finally see some of Ryan's true monsters while sitting with my brother. It changes your entire perspective and I now truly know what is roaming the Manitoba bush. Unfortunately my brother missed a perfect heart shot by 3 inches and just shaved the brisket on a huge boar from the ground at "Too Close". Now that I have seen those bears my standards for my return in 2018 have changed.
For those who have hunted Ryan's before, Determination is still ridiculous and the big mean sow is still ruling Far Side. There is also a sow at Lost Lake that they think is between 6'6" and 7'. I saw her at 5 yards and she is impressive.
Camp is better than ever. Ryan has his own property now and is making it a more permanent camp. The tents have permanent deck-like elevated floors, the cooking facilities are great and the new bathroom/shower facility is outstanding.
I will be back later with pictures.

Looking forward to some of the stories, come on Kevin please share.

Nice recap, and looking forward to the stories to come...

I was a very late addition to the 2015 Stickflingers group. In fact, I darned near didn't get to go due to craziness in my business. With under 24 hours left everything came together and I grabbed my gear for a rush to the airport.
I don't think I made a very good impression. The first night I had several big bears on the Too Close stand. I was so tired I kept falling asleep even though Too Close is a ground stand with just a few pieces of brush for cover. I was totally napping with bears 12 yards from me. One bear walked up and looked at me from 6 feet. I walked out at dusk and laid down about 75 yards from the bait to rest. Unfortunately I fell sound asleep and never heard the truck arrive just 25 yards away. Mike searched for me for 15 minutes and was about to leave when I suddenly awoke and saw his light. I'm not sure my explanation made much sense, and neither does sleeping on the ground amidst large hungry bears. I don't recommend you start your hunt this way...unless you enjoy scrutiny from Ryan.
-
Here are some pictures.
My view from the stand. My shot was 11 yards right in front of the bait (trailmix).

The stand from the bait. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/dpagel77/Manitoba%202015/P6030109%20-%20Copy%20-%20Copy_zpswmzwfrgm.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/dpagel77/media/Manitoba%202015/P6030109%20-%20Copy%20-%20Copy_zpswmzwfrgm.jpg.html)
My arrow from the stand. It hit the barrel as it went through the bear and fell out about 10 yards from the bait. The bear. I used a 62 inch, 55# @ 28, Silvertip longbow, tapered Surewood shaft and Magnus I 4-blades.

That's what I'm talking about!
-
Nicely done Dave. I really like the buckskin muzzle.
I climbed down to fill my hat with "Bait" last year. It was like having popcorn at the movies. Ryan definitely doesn't cut costs, or corners, on the important parts.
-
Good shooting! Mike, Ha , I remember a guy used to snack on donuts from the bear bait, after all, they were kept frozen until use. Unfotunately, the outfitter used beaver carcasses and wasn't conserned how they were handedled near the bait, and so my friend got sick from girardia a week after the trip. Ha Ha . Be care with that tastey bait.

Nice Bear Dave, and the bait makes a great snack...

What a beautiful bear Dave. Congratulations! Are you having a rug done or a mount to show of that perfect coat? It sure is a nice one.
-
I took it to the taxidermist yesterday and he suggested we wait until we have it back from the tannery before we decide. It will either be a 1/2 body or full body mount.

OUTSTANDING bear Dave.

 Nice bear Dave

Good one, Dave. Too bad Tom didn't get his bear, but that's hunting. This place looks like bear heaven, for sure.

My hunt didn't work out like I'd hoped but I do have a story with some pics. I'll get back on as soon as I have time to share. Ryan runs an awesome camp, has a very low pressure hunting area and it really is bear paradise!

Now that's a pretty looking shot!!

Great looking bear. Congrats! Looking forward to the story Kent.

Good Job Dave! :clapper:

WOW! Beauty

Yep it's a beautiful color phase bear that I really wanted to bring back home with me but it just didn't work out, still kicking myself. I locked onto a spot once I decided to take the shot, came to full draw, released and watched the arrow hit exactly where I was looking. I thought it was a perfect shot, tight behind the shoulder and about 1/3 of the way up. Would have been perfect for broadside. What I didn't realize until I reviewed the video was that the bear turned more than I thought and was actually at more of a quartering away angle by the time I reached anchor and released.
(http://i1067.photobucket.com/albums/u428/kentroberts1/Mobile%20Uploads/image_9.jpg) (http://s1067.photobucket.com/user/kentroberts1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_9.jpg.html)

Once Ryan arrived to pick me up I showed him the video and since I didn't hear a death moan we decided to wait until morning to take up the trail.
A couple hours later we saw that it was supposed to rain overnight so about 4 hrs after the shot we started trailing. Found about the first 2/3 of the arrow about 10 yards down the trail and the fletching end 10-15 yards farther. Began to find decent blood that got less and less the farther we went. After probably 200-250 yards we were down on hands and knees finding a single drop every 10-20 yards. Even though it was a good 4 hrs after the shot when we started trailing so the bear definitely wasn't pushed it never laid down. I believe with the quartering angle the arrow passed behind the front shoulder and came out the brisket without ever entering the vitals.
I had 8 different bears come into the bait that night including a big, mature, long legged black boar about an hour before dark that ran everything off the bait. All this on the first evenings hunt.
This was my third bear hunt. First one in Quebec, I didn't have a shooter bear come into the bait all week, a sow with 3 Cubs was it. Last fall in ME I had a great time and killed a really nice big dry sow on the 4th evening which was the only bear I saw all week.
Ryan has an absolutely awesome place to kill a great bear and I hope I get to go back in the next couple years, can't imagine a better spot. I also totally agree with his policy where if you shoot a bear you're done, whether you kill it or not. I think more outfitters should have the same policy.
I really don't like telling stories about game that got away. Just a reminder that picking a spot and being able to hit that spot is essential, just make sure you pick the right spot for the angle. I'm still kicking myself and probably will be for a long time.
Congrats Dave on a beautiful bear! Great job!

Kent...
Nothing but admiration for you. That was definitely a tough outcome and the way you handled it shows a lot of class and ethics. Wish I could have spent some time getting better acquainted with you and that bruin.
-
Kent, My son and I share your feelings. We both went through the same thing in the first week with Ryan. Very disappointing but we both learned a lot.
Cant wait to go back.
-
It was a tough night and morning for Kent, but as Kevin said he handled it like a true sportsman who cares.
From what I saw I am also glad he didn't bring any LH samples with him!
D.P.
-
Hey, did any of you guys get to try the Fiddle Heads?
-
I can't say that I did. Is it like asparagus?
D.P.
-
Ryans neighbor picked some, Fiddle head Ferns, in the clearing behind the tents, where the 3-d course is set up and pickled some....absolutely delicious...not to mention the head cheese he made. Never thought I'd say that about head cheese
-
Was the neighbor Ray? Fiddlehead ferns are fantastic, but you better be quick, they only grow for a couple weeks.
-
Ray is the neighbor. Somewhat of a jack of all trades around the area. He made some corned bear that was outstanding too.
By the way Mike, Kent was at Ratatoulie in the picture I believe, but my brother got to experience Determination and thump a bear on the noggin with the tip of his longbow.
D.P.
-
I too hunted determination, had two bears touch the ladderstand and give me the stare down. Makes ya think whats going on in their minds as they look at you so close you can see the sun glare off their eyes. Loved it.
-
Had a young boar walk right up to the base of my ladder and make eye contact with me too. Thought for a minute he was gonna climb on up to join me. Then he just turned around and moseyed back over to the bait. Stand was maybe 10 yards from the bait barrel and not more than 10' high. Very cool to be that close to so many bear that really seem like they could care less that you're there. Got lots of video.
-
Nice work Dave!
-
Ryan definitely has a phenomenal area to hunt. The combination of agriculture and bush habitat is perfect for bear reproduction and growth. I sat 5 different stands and saw about 30 different bears. I might be color-blind though, as every last bear was black. It was almost the norm to walk in and find bears actively feeding at the bait. They would often amble away and wait until things quieted down, then return to feed.
I hunted the Determination stand on day 4 and actually found it to be fairly tame. I saw 5 or 6 bears that night and had 3 of them chased up trees around me by bigger ones. One 175 pounder jumped up a tree next to mine and popped its jaws at the huge distance of 5 feet. After exiting the stand toward dusk I had a bear follow me out the trail and try to bluff me...great fun. It was absolutely the norm to climb down with bears feeding/watching from the bait.
Ryan's new camp is superb. Elevated decks hold 2 large wall tents which are very spacious. Four hunters have plenty of room to occupy. The combination bathroom/shower house is a true luxury and we all commented how good it was to have a hot shower whenever needed. Kitchen and dining areas were also very well set up, though my cook could have been better looking. I guess that's to be expected when you prepare your own meals!
All-in-all, the toughest part of this hunt for me was actually not having to work hard. I told Ryan and Mike I am so used to diy hunts...haven't hunted with a guide in many years...that I found it hard to 'just' hunt.
-
Congrats guys!
-
On day 5 I was placed at the stand called Elk Rub. A medium-ish bear was on the bait as we approached, and it walked away as we entered. Before I could get settled in the stand this bear was back and gorging. That evening I saw 5 bears including a 40 pound cub which came in alone. After eating for 15 minutes the cub jumped onto a tree and ended up at least 75' high, where it remained safely away from other bears. The cub never showed the slightest inclination to descend while I was there. Later there was a nice bear on the bait which chased a couple other bears off as it fed. Eventually a bigger bear showed up and bluffed the feeding bear away, then moved in to feed itself. I debated whether to shoot this last bear, and decided I would if given a broadside chance.
After almost an hour of nonstop feeding with its back to me, the bear changed its attitude and I was sure it was about to walk. It did, and way faster than I can tell it my arrow flashed through the ribs and buried deeply into the barrel. I knew it was a done deal and both heard and saw the bear crash after a 5 second hooking run. I like doing my own recoveries and was extremely pleased to find this bear on my own. I marked its position and headed for my atv parked a mile away. Pretty good evening I must admit!

Congrats Kevin....gotta love those short blood trails. I know I did last Saturday following mine.

Congrats guys! would love to make it on one of these trips!

Congrats Kevin ...beautiful bear thxs for sharing your story!
-
Congrats Kevin. Any details on the bear or your bow/gear?
-
Congratulations Kevin!
I new you would do well. Ryan really does a great job and knows his stuff.
Abe
-
I have had a week now to contemplate on my mmmmiss. While I am disappointed in my poor shot (3 inches too low), I had a great time. Ryan deserved a better shooter for all of his efforts. His camp is great and getting better everyday.
The number of bears is amazing. I saw over 30 bears in 5 nights. You have to sit Determination to fully appreciate close encounters. The mad sow was also interesting.
All in all a great hunt with my brother and camp friends. I would highly recommend Stickflingers to anyone. Tom
-
Thanks for the comments guys...all of you. Brock (Ron)...nice job on your bruin, too!
I think I have to partly blame Pagel for my decision to kill. I was enjoying the hunting and actually had pretty much decided I wasn't likely to shoot anything...then came Dave's chunky chocolate which whetted my desire. I also really wanted some bear meat to bring home, and I now have a bunch of it to eat.
Abe...I tend not to be a promoter, but I have no problem telling anyone what a fine hunting weapon my Tuktu EX TD has been. I'm 5-for-5 with it and have watched 4 of those animals fall in sight. I really got it right when I decided to order that one.
I have one more story to tell here later, then I'll leave this thread to others....thanks.
-
Both of those are beautiful bears. Congrats.
-
Great looking bears guys!!
Kevin
Tracy and I had a great sit at Elk Rub as well.
After hunting at Ryan's it would be difficult to go anywhere else for spring bear.

Congrats Kevin. Great Picture of you and the Bear! Your bear looks perfect!

That right there is probably the most truthful statement ever found on the internet.
I'm enjoying the pictures and stories that accompany them. Thanks for bringing us along guys.

After being sure my bear was down and done, I exited the stand and went directly to the bait barrel which now held my broken shaft and Abowyer broadhead. I tried to line up the blades and retrieve the head but no luck. Finally the head popped off the shaft and was in with the bait. I wanted that head...badly enough to ignore the bears I'd been hearing and knew were fairly close. There was some bait in the barrel but it didn't feel like too much. Maybe....
I started fishing some trail mix out of the hole and hoped my head would show up. It didn't, so I kept at it. There was more bait than I thought and I kept working at it. At a couple points I actually picked the barrel up and shook it to get the contents moving. I suddenly realized I was basically calling in bears as I shook the barrel, and the absurdity of it all hit me. I couldn't see more than 10 steps in any direction while kneeling in a pile of luscious goodies. One last look and there was my broadhead...still very sharp. I stowed it in my pack and got the heck out of Dodge...noting the 18" deep pile of trail mix I was leaving. I guess you gotta be a little bit determined and crazy to do some of this stuff!

Yeah may be a couple years for my next spring bear hunt but it will definitely be with Stickflingers. I just don't see how it gets any better than Ryans set up.
-
Also got to find out where he gets his trail mix. I want to try some in a couple Arkansas bear baits this fall. They sure seem to love it and it's probably better for the Bears than some of the more traditional baits.
-
Great bear Kevin.

Silly? does anyone every get scared of the bears?

OUTSTANDING job Kevin and great story.
Dave: you didn't happen to get your bear with one of those super special west Michigan blue arrows did you????

Wow what a great hunt you all had up there, congratulations. Thanks also for sharing the stories and the great pictures, it will hold me over till my next bear hunt.

Mike V- I never "take the bait".
Habujohn- hopefully there are more stories to come as the last group filter back home. Mike
-
Great bears guys! Congrats! Tough one Kent can't wait for more stories and pics.TD.
-
Ranger, Scared? Maybe this story will answer that for you...
One of the guys in camp shot a Bear kinda early in his sit, heard it die and found it. Being that Ryan would be a while getting to him he got his gear together and went and laid down in a some what concealed position but near the road.
He dozes off for a while and awakens to some one breathing pretty heavily just behind him. Sure enough he turns around only to be face to face with a Bear. They scare each other and the Bear runs off....
Needless to say he moved to a more open spot and didn't sleep again till his ride shows up.
-
Cool story Tom, thanks

Great stories fellas, keep them rolling.
-
Well, time is slipping by. I have been having trouble with my computer and posting images so I will just post a narrative and perhaps SteveO will post an image or two for me later.
This was my first guided hunt. I have to say It was one of the best hunting experiences of my life. I don't think I could have had better guys in camp than Brian Wessel, Brian Burkhart, Keith Kocher, SteveO, and Darrell Kemper Sorry for the spelling on the names. A great bunch of guys.
When Ryan posted he had a last minute opening, i mentioned it to my wife of fourty-three years and the wonderful lady she is she said" I think you should go, you are not getting any younger"!
What followed was an exercise in frustration. I shot every bow I had, tried multiple spine/ broadheads and wasn't satisfied with any of them. My form was all out of whack.
I talked with Norm at Blacktail bows, Snag, and gradually things came around. I shortened my draw length a bit, and went back to my glove. I had been trying to convert to a tab. After shooting off and on for about fourty years, the glove just works better at least for now.
I worked mostly on my form as I was really torquing the bow. Finally it started comming around and I ended up with a 60/65 Sitka Spruce arrow by Paul Jalong. I wanted to shoot an arrow built by Snag, but they were not right for this particular bow and in the end I had to go with what I had that worked. I also took some Axis carbons that shot ok for backups.
The last thing I wanted was for Ryan to see me shooting and say "Gary, maybe you should stay in camp today and practice". But finally a couple weeks before I was to leave, I felt like I was shooting pretty well.
To be cnt'd.
-
Before I go any further, I wanted thank the guys from here that responded graciously to my questions. I wanted to be successful on this trip, so I wanted to do everything I could the right way.
I talked with Herdbull, SteveO, Ryan Derlago, Mike Vines, little Big Man, Ryan Sanpei, hope I havnt missed anyone because they were all helpful.
The first afternoon in camp Ryan asked if I was ok in a ground blind. I thought that was a good idea as I had little opportunity to shoot from an elevated position.
When we got to "too close" stand, Ryan re-baited and showed me where I was to sit. I thought Ryan was bringing a stool and as I had told him I had a stool, we both forgot to bring one. No problem, Ryan said I could sit on a partially filled sack of bait. Huh? Ryan said "are you ok with this?". I said "Yes".
Ryan then showed me where a bear trail came right behind the blind. He said "are you sure you are ok with this?" I said yes. Then he told me about another hunter who had been in this setup and had a bear approach within touching distance before he saw him.
I llooked at Ryan and he said "are you sure you are ok with this? It is supposed to be fun". I thought a minute, and replied " well for the first night perhaps a tree stand might be better." Ryan said no problem, and took me to another stand where I did see a couple of bear that night.
The next night Ryan asked where I wantd to go for the evening, and I replied that I would like to go back to the Too Close stand as my comfort level was much higher after I had my first encounter with Canadian bear under my belt. I saw about ten bear thst night, one very nice one but with a rubbed rear end . I did not take any shot.
However, one of the other hunters had shot a really nice big bear the night before and I when I saw him up close, I wondered about my arrow selection. I did actually switch to the carbons for a night or so, but when Ryan told me he shot basically the same weight bow and wood arrow, and said "if you hit the bear where you are supposed to you will have no problem with your setup.
One day during the week, I came back to camp to find Ryan had moved in an elevated platform that we could practice from. Man, that guy works hard for his customers!
I took advantage of the elevated platform and was feeling pretty good about my shooting.
Every day I saw bear that I could have shot, but I was getting picky I guess. Besides, there was a lot of time left.
-
Boy, what long winded old fart I have become. Sorry, I will cut to the chase.
On the next to last day, I went back to a .stand that Ryan thought might give me the best chance at a big bear.
I had three come in but decided to wait. At 9:15pm, a chocolate bear came in that was big enough. I decided I wanted to take this bear.
As he started to leave the clearing, he paused slightly. I seemed to be on autopilot. I drew, concentrating on where I wanted to hit him, hit my anchor, and the next thing I knew, I saw the arrow in flight, hitting in the ribs.
He was moving on impact, and I thought perhaps I had hit low and perhaps too far back. I heard him running, breaking twigs and then... Silence.
-
:campfire:
-
Sounds awesome!!! Bucket list hunt of mine for sure! Keep going!
-
No death moan. Now I was wondering about my shot. I had not seen my arrow when the bear took off running.
Afterwards I walked over to the shot site and thought I saw some blood. I gathered up my gear and headed for the road to wait for Ryan.
When he arrived we talked and he decided we should take a look and trail for a few yards to see what we could find.
We had gone about 60, maybe 70 yards when Ryan said "Gary, do you want to take a look at your bear?" I thought are you kidding?"
And there he was laying right on the trail. Probably one of the most important parts of this hunt was when Ryan said "Gary, that was a perfect text-book double lung shot.
Lord, I so wanted to do this thing right. And now it was done.
We took some photo's and then there in the middle of the Canadian bush, we bowed and gave thanks to the Lord for this experience.
I am so happy with this hunt, the guys I got to meet and practice with. Ryan and David did everything humanly possible to make this a good experience. And it was.
The only thing that could have made it better was if my best hunting companion, my son Matt, was there. I hope someday we can make that happen. As my good wife says "you are not getting any younger"!
Thanks again Ryan for a great experience.
Gary

Well done Gary!
-
Well done and well said! No better feeling than getting to enjoy the week, having some cool encounters, and bringing an animal home with a perfect shot. Money well spent
-
Congratulations Gary! What a feeling to see that bear after a short track and a perfect way to pay your respects.
Ryan has a great operation and crew. I missed seeing David, that little working machine, but Magic Mike filled in well and has a similar great work ethic.
Congrats again.

This was my first guided hunt. I have to say It was one of the best hunting experiences of my life. I don't think I could have had better guys in camp than Brian Wessel, Brian Burkhart, Keith Kocher, SteveO, and Darrell Kemper Sorry for the spelling on the names. A great bunch big guys.
I can't add anything to that except send me the pics and I should be able to get them up for you tonight.

Congratulations Gary, Cant wait to see the pics!

Nice story Gary. Congratulations on a great hunt and putting it all together. Looking forward to the photo's.

Thanks for good comments. I realize now I also picked Ray's brain for his thoughts on broadheads. Thanks Ray.
I did also forget to mentioned the equipment. I used my Blacktail VL Elite 53# recurve. I shot a 63# spined Sitka Spruce with a 160 grain Stos two blade. My concerns about the equipment were unfounded as I got a complete pass through and eventually we found the arrow at the site of impact.
I was probably shooting around 51/52 pounds as my draw has shortened up a bit. Glove was an American Leather Crossover. Quiver was a Safari- tuff Duiker. Camo was Sitka, except when I was wearing my thrift store brown plaid shirt. Even tho Ryan thought I looked like an advertisement pic, I think I have gotten good value from Sitka brand clothing. And finally, muck boots.
Oh, thermocell was a very good addition.
I did make one big mistake tho. Keith k. Let me shoot his Tall Tines recurve. Very, very nice bow. That is all I will say about that.
-
Gary,
You're welcome. Nothing ever wrong with having concerns. Tradgang is about sharing experiences and knowledge. I've certainly received more than I've given here over the years. My experience with black bears has always been accurate arrow placement over brute strength every time. Hit them where it belongs and you'll have a happy story to tell like yours.
By the way, I didn't mention it before, but it's so cool to see your post about your wife supporting your dreams. It sure makes it more enjoyable.
-
Congrats Gary ...awesome story!!!felt like I was there with ya...did any of the Tall tines gang put anything on the ground?I know them guys have killed some Big bears over the yrs

Yes, but I don't want to spoil anyone's story. I will let them tell it.

Congrats Gary!

As Gary said, it is not my place to tell others stories and all I have is a big fat failure so dont have much to offer :(
Actually I'm kind of ticked at Stickflingers!
Three days in a row I tried to hunt a certain stand. EVERY time we got to the stand I had THIS fine fat lass wanting to join me

You can see one of her suitors there at the bait barrel. Timid...
So that is basically the only problem you have at Ryan's. You can't always hunt the stand you are supposed to ;)
-
When you go up there it is best to not shoot the sows. They are much better bait than the trail mix. Bears like this don't last long at other camps:

That is a different Chocolate sow btw. I think we saw a dozen different ones. Many, MANY kilometers between baits.

Happily I can say I was in on the first season at Stickflingers and hope to be allowed back for many more. We've seen a lot of changes as things have grown and been constantly refined. I think Ryan has things just about how he wants now. Hunters have big roomy wall tents to stay in, running water, flush toilets, hot showers, and a nice cooking area.

Well done guys. I miss that place. Mike

This is outstanding stuff guys. I knew right away when Ryan started doing bear hunts that this is where I will I go for my first time. Never met him in real life but he's about my age and I trust him just from his posts here on Tradgang. I can't wait to do it.
Gary, I really love your story. Congratulations! My favorite part is where the both of you bowed your heads and said a prayer in thanks. Good stuff! Well done guys!
-
Steve O. Great pics. You are pretty damn good behind the camera!

Thanks for sharing!  :campfire:

Beautiful bear Gary. BTW that looks like a Paul Jalon/Elite Arrows..arrow.

That's Bunkie. He tippy-toed right under my feet on a slanted log, then ate some bait. After that he went straight up the barrel tree and ended up about 75' high...laid up there like a Canadian leopard with his legs dangling. I've got some fine video from this trip and maybe I'll do some snaps out it.
-
I'm just catching up on this thread. Lots of great stories and some beautiful bears guys! Congratulations to everyone. Ryan sure runs an excellent camp!
-
Congrats Gary, Well told story. I hope next time your son will be able to join you in camp.
Steve, with that sea of Estrogen, I'm surprised you didn't see every boar in the village.... Come back this fall.... lol...
I still have not decided if I would like to hunt bears over bait but if I ever do, it looks like Ryan's camp is where I want to be.
-
Good Stuff guys!
Enjoying all of it!

Great Thread! really makes me want to go on a Bear hunt..
-
Yes Ray,
I had another bow set up with Snag's surewoods, but the Blacktail just shot these Sitka Spruce that I got through Ron at Shrew so well, I had to go with them.
Although not as heavy as Surewoods, it blew completely through the bear. I think the total arrow was around 600 grains, tho I don't remember for sure.
-
Really enjoyed the post. Sounds like everyone had a great hunt and came away ready to return. Congrats to all and thank you for sharing your experience. :notworthy:

Always impressed and great stories. Thanks for sharing with us.

Way to go Gary! I have been out of the country and just now got to read your posts. Well done sir!! I knew you were going to have a good hunt!!
-
Congrats Everyone
-
Congrats to all of you guys! great thread!
-
Thanks to all of the hunters in camp this year for your support and putting your faith in us at Stickflingers! Love seeing the adventures come to life and be shared here on TG!
There were a couple of monsters shot with sticks the last week but the hunters are not much for posting here. With enough prying perhaps they can share their adventures???
-
come ON guys and SHARE THE HAPPINESS
-
This thread has gotten me through the last several weeks. I wanted to be hunting bears but I am doing physical therapy. Thank you, for all who has posted.
-
Please, please, please tell your stories

:campfire: come boys cough'm up

Okay, I guess you guys have called me out. As background, I've hunted with Stickflingers for the past five years. Over that time, I've seen some great bears come out of the Manitoba bush. More importantly, I've always had great fun in Ryan's camp. Ryan runs a top shelf operation and I've been fortunate to share some quality campfires with some great bowhunters. I've been going up each year with the Tall Tines group and we always have a great time.
Over the years, I've passed on several really nice bears and a couple of years ago I was fortunate to kill a nice color-phase bear. Last year, I had a unique encounter with a very large bear on the "Shirt Sleeves" stand but it never presented me with a good shot opportunity. This year Ryan and my guide David mentioned that Shirt Sleeves had a big chocolate colored bear as well as a very large black bear roaming in the area. They suggested I hunt Shirt Sleeves again and I was happy with their recommendation.
I sat Shirt Sleeves for the first two nights and only saw a single, average-sized bear each night. On day three, I told them that I was ready for a change of scenery. They agreed and quickly recommended the Fishing Lake stand.
Fishing Lake is a remote stand that requires a twelve mile quad ride. I had sat this stand in previous years and saw some good bears but nothing huge. I was in a "go big or go home" hunting mode. Shortly after getting settled in my stand, I had bears working their way towards me. Within the next couple of hours, I videoed five different black bears but never picked up my bow. During the last twenty minutes of the evening hunt, I glassed a large bear slowly working his way in my direction. This was a "no doubt" kind of bear and I waited patiently for him to close the distance. Slowly but surely, he progressed towards my stand. At the end of the evening, the bowstring slipped from my fingers as he walked by at seven yards.
I guess the picture will tell the rest of the story...

Holy Mackeral Bryan. What a brute of a bear!
7 yard shot. He must have looked huge at that distance!
Congrats to you!
-
Well done Bryan!!! I'm sure it was worth the wait, and a half a can of bear spray from last year.
-
That's what I'm talking about , thanks for sharing …. and congrats on a great bear !
-
Pictures don't do that bear justice. He was a brute. And we have handled some beasts!
Bryan has put in a lot of time for his once in a lifetime bear. Thank goodness Ryan manages his area so there are bears of a lifetime to go around. Can't wait to go back with my son as part of the TT crew. A finer group you will not ever meet.
-
Man that looks like a huge bear, congrats!
-
Wow what an animal. Congratulations on holding out for your bear. Your patience definitely was rewarded.
-
Awesome Bryan ...that there is a brute WAY TO GO!
Definately a bear of a lifetime for many Ryan sure does know how to manage them ..Thxs for sharing pics and the story!
-
Outstanding Bryan! Ryan has got some big boys and I applaud your patience. I have not been as strong willed, but I saw a couple of truly big bears this year and plan to adopt your go big or go home attitude when I go back in 2018.
By the way,I shot my bear this year at Shirt Sleeves this year. I also have to agree with you that some of quad rides are epic. At least we had low water levels this year.
D.P.
-
I was astounded when Bryan sent me a photo of his bear. Just a real beast, and nobody deserves it more than Bryan. Super way to get things going in 2015!
-
Great Bear Bryan! His coat is perfect!
-
Fantastic hunt Bryan! Ryan does such a great job of giving hunters opportunities at bears of their dreams. Congrats!!! What a bear!!!
-
Awesome bear Bryan! Congrats on your harvest.
-
Great stuff.......
-
A great guy to share a camp with too- doesn't snore or anything. Congratulations again Bryan.
-
Congratulations to all.
Bryan that is a special animal. I'm sure the life size mount will look fabulous in your memory room.
-
Then there's this guy! Saw 102 bears in 6 days his first time to camp but managed to see this monster his 1st night out this year.

:scared: :scared: yes that's a whopper now that my ankles are done I'll be watching for cancellations next season …
Ryan runs a great camp
-
Oh yeah,, and Darryl (previous pic) is the only guy at Stickflingers to have a fist fight with a bear!!
-
Darryl is such a little guy the bears must not be afraid of him!
What great bear. I knew it had to be a good one to get him as excited as he was when I talked to him.
D.P.
-
Nicely done towards all the hunters. Thank you for taking us along on this adventure.
-
It ain't bear hunting if you haven't kicked or punched a bear!
Well....in my case.... it was only about a 40 pound cub. Not very manly I suppose, but necessary at the time! LOL!
:smileystooges:
Let's hear more about this man vs. bear fight!
-
Not the best pic of D's bear but gives a better idea of the size this one was a hoss

-
Incredible, that's the size of bear that dreams are made of..... Well done to all involved! :-)
-
Yikes! what did that thing weigh in at? Any guesses at the head measurement?
-
Talk about saving the best for last. Wow.
That pic of the bear on the table is ... epic.
-
What's that about a "fist fight" with a bear? I must have missed something. Sounds like one got a little close. Please expand. Thanks for sharing. :banghead:
-
Good bear trophy photos are very tough to take. You see so many guys with little bears sitting way back from them to make them look big you get desensitized to what a big bear looks like in a proper picture. Bryan and Daryl are sitting right next to BIG bears. Nothing is more over estimated than bear live weight. We did not have a scale in camp this year unfortunately. Ryan would be a much better estimator than I but I'd guess Daryls bear close to 350 and Bryan's close to 400. They had completely different body shapes; one short and round and one long and lean.
The wonderful thing about Stickflingers is Ryan manages it for big bears. He has MANY bears, tries to educate his hunters on shooting only boars, and has a large percentage of hunters who will not shoot small bears. It's a lot easier not shooting an average bear knowing there are a large number of mature bears roaming around.
There is nothing like seeing a BIG black bear; one that takes your breath away at first sight. Thank goodness I found a place to do it every trip
-
My goodness, that bear on the table is definitely epic. That's a big boy right there. Doesn't even matter what the weight is, he's a hoss.
-
Just catching up on all the stories but it looks like a great time was had by all, :bigsmyl: Congrats guys!
-
Great stories come about from a great guide. Keep em coming.

Yes, have to agree with Steve. Here's a photo of a good Michigan bear I shot in 2008. I was 265 at the time and the bear weighed 225# dressed on the taxidermist commercial hanging scale 3 days after harvest. This boar had no body fat to speak of (early September bear), but his head was green scored at 18 3/4 by the taxidermist after he got it back from the beetle cleaner, so he was a good bear. When I took my picture, I wanted to be right up in front holding his chin up, but for me to make a bear look big, it'd have to be a brownie.
Ray\\'s 2008 MI black bear (http://www.shrewbows.com/raylyonbear2008.html)
Love seeing this thread each year. I'm hoping we see one from the man himself-Stickflingers proprietor Ryan-as I loved the on the ground video of his hunt last year.
-
I wish a lot of guides would not position their clients a ways behind bear to give optical illusion as to it being larger relative to hunter than might be the case. Why cant they be happy with the bear taken....weight and skull measurements being the same...causes lots of confusion when a new hunter sees a bear at 250 with 17" noggin that looks to weigh more and be larger than a confirmed 300# and book head. LOL That is why I like to put mine in headlocks....no confusion that I am bigger. LOL
-
Good points on hunter positioning in trophy photos. I generally try and have the hunter place his hand on the back or shoulder of the bear so the viewer can see where he/she is in relation to the bear. Seems to avoid that intentional upsizing trophy pic.
-
A thought on posed pictures:
A lot of them are taken with point & shoot digital cameras at close distances. The closer the lens is to the animal, the larger the animal appears in relation to the person even if the person is against the animal. The result can look like the hunter is 5' behind the animal even when not. Part of that is due to the semi-wide angle of a typical point & shoot lens.
Although uncommon, the most accurate images are taken at a moderate distance with a lens set between approximately 50 to 90mm and then cropped to size. This almost always prevents the wide-angle effect from happening.
I don't recall very many guys ever saying "Hey, you need to make sure this thing doesn't look too big!"
-
True, Kevin. When taking a photo of my bear (which was the smallest of three taken that week, Ryan made a comment that showed his feelings on the subject of photo "tricks". "Not an exact quote, but something to the effect of :
"We want an honest photo".
Which was fine with me, it is s trophy I will never forget. Not to say I wouldn't mind getting another chance at a bigger one!
