Title: How to taper fiberglass bowfishing arrow shaft?-SOLVED
Post by: Tall Paul on May 28, 2015, 04:25:00 PM
Hello all,

I've got a couple solid fiberglass shafts that I want to use for bowfishing. But first, I need to taper the nock end.

Will one of the cheap, hand-held taper tools work on Fiberglass?

To put the nock taper on hardwoods or solid fiberglass, a disk sander with an 11 degree wedge is best. I put a thin circle around the shaft as a guide mark and then take a little at a time slowly turning the shaft until enough is taken off at time until there is enough to seat the nock.

Uh-oh, that's what I was afraid of. I don't have a disc sander, and I'd rather not spend the money for just a couple shafts.

Any other ideas?   :goldtooth:

You can use one of the cheap hand held for a couple arrows but they are not much good after that. They don't do a great job also on fiberglass. I have done for quick repairs while  on a bow fishing trip.

Chuck one up in your drill and brace the free end with the other hand, against the sidewalk or a concrete block, then let er rip.  Maybe pre mark the shaft using another already tapered arrow, to show how far down the shaft it should be tapered, to get it close to 11 degrees.

Are they over the shaft nocks.
My fiberglass are non tapered . just glue the nock right on.
I think three rivers archery carries this type of nock.

With the flat grinder on a Dremel tool, you can make a straight line on paper or anything flat and then draw an 11 degree line off of that line.  Grind all four side flat and to the same distance from the tip and match that 11 degree line, then the corners and then the eight corners, then the 16 corners. etc. etc.  It would be better to get the nocks that fit over the arrow if Three Rivers has them.

Those are all good ideas guys.

I couldn't find any type of non-tapered nocks at 3rivers, or anywhere else.

Paul, could ya slip an aluminum shaft over the end, epoxy it, and attach your choice of nock?

I ordered a 3rivers taper tool-link below-and it put a beautiful nock taper on my fiberglass shafts! Couldn't have worked any better!
