Title: Kansas?????
Post by: tomsm44 on July 14, 2015, 04:48:00 PM
I'm looking at a job in Kansas, nothing for certain yet as the job isn't officially posted but it sounds pretty promising, and my wife and kids are all excited at the thought of it, so if I get an offer I'll probably be headed that way.  I was just curious if there were any trad guys on here that will be close by.  The job is in the McPherson area, but I could probably live anywhere within 30-40 miles of there.  It'll be a couple of months probably if I get to go, which will put me there just in time for deer season with no time to prepare, so I may need some advice on some nearby public hunting.  Also, I've never hunted outside of Louisiana, or even outside of Bienville parish for that matter, so I'm going to have to relearn how to hunt altogether.

I grew up in the area, about 45 miles east of McPherson in Florence. McPherson is a great little town, and the little towns around it would be nice places to live also.  The bird hunting is fantastic in that area, and there are some big deer for sure.

If I were moving to the area I would seriously consider living right in McPherson, or Lindsborg.  There is a great little pub there called the Ol' Stuga, great sammiches.

Shoot me a PM sometime, I still know a lot of people there in Mac.

Hope it works out for you.  I'm originally from about an hour from Mac.  There are good trad guys in the area. I'm about three hours from there now.  Kansas always calls me back!

If you are into great bows, Mike Dunnaway, maker of Wild Horse Creek bows is around perry ks.

I'm too east to be much help to you as well but good luck with getting the job. There is some public land around Lake Kanopolis that I hear is pretty good.
At least moving here from La. you won't be complaining about the humidity in the summer...    ;)

Yes you are right about kanopolis  it does have some good hunting.. Hunted it for awhile took some nice deer and saw some dander also. Some of the better places are a little bit of a hike. When you get up here give me a shout I'll do my best to show you some areas.

Anchorman, I live in Wichita and hunt kanopolis every year. I lived in Mcpherson for 4 years nice little town.  There are some great deer up there but man does that place get hit hard in early November. In October and later November you can have alot of spots to yourself.  If you guys get together and go give me a shout.

Gabe

Thanks Anchorman, I may take you up on that offer. I've never hunted public land and Kansas will be a completely new style of hunting than the pine thickets I'm used to, so it'll definitely be a learning experience for me.

There is also some public corps land around Lake Wilson. It gets hit pretty hard too though.
