Yep. ...at Elm Hall. The challenge is down. :bigsmyl:
Sledge

Widow Roger just got a new Black Widow and he's feelin a widow cocky. The poor kid has had an inferiority complex most of his life so if it would boost his confidence to beat a nearly 80 year old man on the archery range then I just might let him win...unless he gets TOO cocky, then I'll have to put him in his place... :knothead:
Lobo
:archer2:
-
We never decided on the wager?
-
How much will the tickets be to watch this spectacular event? :biglaugh:
-
Bhahahaha that's awesome Ron! Lol
-
Someone needs to video this! I'd pay to watch that!
Steve.
-
Is that elder abuse ?
-
I'll wager $20 on Ron (no offense Roger).
If Ron wins, I'll make a $20 cash donation to honor his triumph during next year's St. Jude auction.
Southpaws United!
-
Seriously Roger! Challenging The Michigan Monarch, that is almost sacrilegious?  :scared:
-
I learned to ride a bike about 50 years ago. I might not be quite as fast on one now days, but I can still do it. Just saying, lol. I have 20.00 for St.Jude's as well on Ron. Now I have to write that down somewhere, lol.

Rumors surrounding this epic showdown, its going to be broadcast live on ESPN. Spokeperson for ESPN is equating it to the battle of the sexes tennis showdown of Bobby Riggs vs.Billy Jean King. He would not comment who was who here but alas we all know.

No trash talking here....beating Ron will be a tough mountain to climb.
But SOMEBODY texted me pictures this morning of an old Wilson Bros Black Widow with the caption "the bow I'm going to beat you with"...so it's on...You do bring up a good point, Ron should remember that lock on the West gate. I beat it pretty good :bigsmyl:
Bud B has given me an idea for the wager Ron. If I lose, I will donate $50 in Ron's name to St Jude's....Ron, if I pull off an upset, you donate $50.
I think all you guys should pick sides, with donations going to the kids....waddya think Lobo? Deal?

This was my first text from Ron this morning....

-
Before I place my bet, I have to know, are there kiddie/senior senile stakes at this event that Ron can shoot from?
-
Hey Roger, do we have to publicly pick? You know, I'd hate to announce ahead of time who I was backing. :scared:
Just remember, the old man is RETIRED now and has nothing better to do than practice all day and grill big fat T-bone steaks at night for protein to build his shooting muscles and you're out there trying to bring home the bacon as well as eating it. :p

Hmmm, I don't recognize that model of Super Shrew?????

So far, I think the kids will be in Favor if Ron Wins...
just sayin Roger, If you win now, it would be like stealing from the kids...Kinda selfish :readit:  just sayin :readit: :biglaugh:

Hmmmm, that bow looks familiar. Those two PAA targets on the wall were a 297 and 298 out of a possible 300 score, The year was 1966 and Roger was three years old.. :archer:

I know how invincible a man can feel with a new widow, but.....
-
I'll pledge $20.00 to next year's St. Jude auction in the name of the winner. 'cause I ain't pickin' a winner. If we can get some money raised, the kids win. What say all y'all?
-
Good heavens...I am in with whomever said that a video would raise some money...
Not nice to mess with the elders in Camp... but ...may the best man win!
When's this shootout and how long does the suspense build anyway???
-
The Elm Hall shoot is in a week and a half and is one of the best kept secrets in southern MI. The shoot out will occur on Saturdy
Greg Nicolaou will officiate (and hold the special prize).
-
I will donate $50 in Ron's name to St Jude's....Ron, if I pull off an upset, you donate $50.
OK Sledge, you're on  either way the kids come out the winner.
But in all fairness I can't use that old Wilson Brothers Black Widow target recurve. It's 68" long, and 36# at my draw. It shoots a 700 carbon like a lazer beam so I'm not gonna take advantage of you by using it. I'll shoot my old 40# Shrew Model-T longbow against your new 60# Black Widow recurve.
I'll even help you out by watching very closely when you shoot and pointing out the mistakes I see in your form. :goldtooth:
-
I have to make it to Elm Hall this year, been saying I'm going to go, but keep putting it off. This would make my first time EPIC!!!! I'll put $20.00 in the kitty for St. Jude no matter who wins too! GO RON & GO ROGER, the kids are winners no matter what.
-
Greg Nicolaou will officiate (and hold the special prize). [/QUOTE
The initials of that special prize wouldn't happen to be E.T.L. would it? :jumper:

"Yup, that'll do. " In the famous few words of Roger Norris.

I can't wait to read the results. I am a long way from being able to go there. I do hope that Ron puts in on you, Roger. :)
-
Aaaahhh....I LOVE underdog status....No matter. Whatever happens, the kids will get a few bucks.
By the way, in that picture above, Ron is holding a bow he bought 20 minutes before we shot. He won. So if I do pull off an upset, believe me it will be epic.
Big Dog, if this were a poll.....you would be winning! This crowd is rooting for you...don't let them down. But if you gotta lose....at least I'm charming and humble :bigsmyl: :archer:

Great thread! Have fun men!!
-
Roger, I have to say, when I saw Ron with that big ol' Black Widow in his hands I did not think you had a chance. Maybe you can talk him in to shooting you right handed...
Good luck buddy, you are going to need it :saywhat:
-
I got this Steve O..... :goldtooth:
-
What's the format of this shoot? Spots, Fita Face, Blue Face, 3D, field...
Sounds awesome! Go get 'em RONger!
-
Epic!
I'm cheering for you Roger. Somebody has to

Down in Shrew Hollow by ole Armstrong Creek
There once was a young buck, who thought his shooting had peaked
So he went to Elm Hall with that new Widow Bow
Where he met Ron LaClair and now his head hangs low
-
If Michigan was not a 8 hour drive for me Id love to be there.
Gotta be fun, heck, I probably could use a archery lesson too.

Think sabotage!

Rogers got a new bow, his confidence you'd say was boosted
Ron shows us a bow from the 60s, some say hes almost roosted
Ones from times of old, ones from times of somewhat new
Both respected men, as we watch our interest grew
A challenge has been laid a fun one of sorts
Will the competitors be draped in wool or skimpy buckskin shorts?
Most of us cant make it so anxiously we wait
For those that will be there, we need updates, please don't be late :campfire:
Looking forward to following this :archer:

This thread gets my blood pumping a little. There is nothing like some good competition. That feeling of the disconnect between your mind and motor skills. The fight to try and bring them back together. Your heart starts racing, your muscles tense up your breathing shallows. Man I'm getting pumped up thinking about it.
Deep breaths, Deep breaths, Deep breaths. I'm having flash backs haha. Have fun guys.
-
I'm sure this will be a fair competition. Nobody will pick up a stout stick on the range and break it while the other guy is drawing. I can't imagine anyone talking while the other guy is shooting. For sure nobody would say 'your brace height looks a little low' on the first target or 'wow that targets farther away than it looks'. No, these are true gentleman with the utmost respect for the integrity of the competition.
-
Ray,
I've always preferred the "Hey, where do you put your thumb on your string hand when you shoot"...
Then watch the spraying begin...
-
Elm Hall is my favorite shoot and I will be tied up with about 35 of my wife's relatives coming from Germany and Holland that week for a family reunion. BUMMER!
I agree with all of those above who posted that these are 2 honorable men who would never consider mind games to influence the outcome, so I will be anxiously awaiting the results of this match.
My $20 for St Judes is riding on Ron (we do share a first name after all, even if we don't shoot at the same level).
No. Wait. I'll make it $30 if Ron wins and $20 if he lets Roger win.
-
look forward to seeing the out come since I will be at elm hall for this great shoot out and would gladly throw in $20.00 bucks in the winners name
Too bad Sagamore doesn't have the clay pigeon shoot anymore there they could shoot it out where everyone could watch and "cheer them on" ;)

Ah yes, Denny Every's 'turkey shoot' was always good for spectator's.
Ole Sagamore explaining the shoot off rules at the Michigan Traditional Bowhunter's shoot back in 2012:

Ahhhhh...The Turkey Shoot...what great fun.
If you look closely at the cover of this Michigan Bowhunters Magazine between the title and the top of the sign you will see the "tom" turkey flying thru the air. I was lucky enough to catch that action shot of my son doing what he does best.

My only boast is I started this by saying " I'm going to beat Ron LaClair "
Don't worry guys....if you don't realize. ..Ron and I are very close friends. We bust on each other every night about shooting, fishing, not answering the phone quick enough...we're good. No need to get biblical :bigsmyl:
That said.....we both love competition, we both shoot our best with a little ribbing going on.So I have no choice. The Big Dog is going down. For tart apple pie lovers everywhere! !!!
-
Well if your representing the tart apple pie I'm rooting for you (plus Lobo is at Denton Hill so he can't see this). I'm still thinking there's a dark horse (Greg) in this race and he's going to take my daughter to a beautiful thirty target local range this morning and then Roger will be here mid week for our own little warm-up with Greg at the same range. You boys may want to hold off on your final bets until the warm-up tests are done.
-
Greg damn near won last year....and he's training hard this year because he drew a bear tag. If Greg wins ( which is absolutely probable ) my donation to St Jude stands

Ron called me after shooting his bow 2 nights ago. He said "the only way you can beat me is with a crossbow and a solid rest " :help:

If you can't beat him shooting....try arm wrestling. No...wait...Ron's a pretty big boy still in good shape....stick to shooting and concentrate more... :dunno:

My daughter Morgan shot with "uncle Greg" today on the 3D course. She knows of uncle Ron's skills and accomplishments, however she said Greg is shooting pretty good. It'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out in a week. I believe Las Vegas odds makers will be posting odds after Wednesday's tuneup round with Greg Roger and I here in the north. The first round of private message mind games didn't cause ron to flinch.
-
No offense Rodger but I think the only way to beat Ron is to lock him in his trailer !
-
Just spoke with Ron out at Denton Hill. Word of our battle has even reached the folks out there. Ron full of confidence, so am I. There was even talk of upping the ante....... :bigsmyl:
-
Lot of trash talking going on here........ :)
-
I will be at Elm hall if you nead an official to witness this event.
-
Just got back from Denton, a long drive. I was so busy socializing that I didn't even shoot when I was there.
When I got home this evening and unloaded the truck I grabbed my bow to take a few shots just to see if laying off for a couple of days had any effect on my accuracy. From my deck to the target is about 22-23yds. I picked a spot on the matte and put the first arrow right where I was looking at a small spot. The second arrow was right next to the first. The third arrow... I unstrung the bow and put it away

Roger, I think you, Greg and I will have to sit on the back deck after shooting Wednesday with a glass of ETL and talk about your strategy for Saturday. Ron looks like he's shooting pretty good, so that strategy session may take a while.
-
We can certainly sit and drink good whiskey, but my strategy has never been deeper than shooting as many perfect arrows as I can that day.
Statisticians and odds makers would have us believe that the outcome of some match ups is inevitable. Yet we still play the game.

I was trying as hard as I could with my plain green glass Hill Style longbow and old 1960's Microflite arrow technology, but I just couldn't get my shooting up to Lobo's standards:

I'm glad I have a family commitment for the big shoot off day (surprise 60th anniversary for my parents), so I won't get embarrassed by the big 'wolf' dogs. None the less, if I was going to shoot, I'd proudly wear this vintage shirt (which by the way I was wearing under my shirt when I killed my first turkey ever in 2000 with my Super Shrew Samurai-seen in my avatar):

The ten ring is the ten ring Roger. Don't listen to the naysayers. You got this!

Well the warm-up match is complete. We had a great time and let's just say its going to be interesting on Saturday. Roger has a beautiful Black Widow bow with an Asbell grip and its a real shooter.
-
I sure envy all of you that are going to be at Elm Hall to watch this. I will be following closely on Facebook. I know some of my buddies will keep me updated.
-
Because of the high stakes of this match (bragging rights of course), there is an independent third party individual making the trip and she will be the official scorer of the competition. I have to say, she was the official of last nights 'warm-up' outing and she was ruthless in her decisions and once her ruling was made, all participants left the target without a peep.
Roger did buy this individual dinner last night after the shoot, however in spite of such gratuitous bribery, I'm still confident that the scoring will be impeccable. :readit: ;)
I know Ron will be tough to beat, however Roger and Greg will make this very interesting. Good luck to all three of my Shrewhaven buddies!!! :archer: :archer2:

Well....here we are on the eve of the Elm Hall Swampland Smackdown. The trash is all talked, the bets are all made, and Lobo has his target gear all squared away and ready. I will be using my new hunting rig, a Black Widow PCHII at 60#, with Traditional Hunter Gold Tips weighing in at almost 650 grains. No target gear for me :bigsmyl:

Well here is the Shrew Crew contingent, plus our lovely judge and umpire Donna. Donna is an MBH Governor, and considering she and her husband Dan own/operate one of the coolest 3D ranges I have been on, we agreed she would keep us honest. Ron watching as Greg (Shrewhaven Master Chef)prepares for a perfect arrow. We shot 2 courses....had Greg not stumbled on a couple early targets in course #1, he may have won the whole match. He beat me by 5 points on the second 1/2.

Another tough shot that Greg smoked...

How timely that as the results of this "friendly competition" comes to an end, here on the east coast, NBC has a St. Jude special showing as I type this.
My donation is going in tonight, so it can go to work immediately instead of waiting for next May/June.
So did Ron win? Roger?
NO! St. Jude did!!
-
In the end....I pulled it off. So all of you non believers that bet on Ron, I suppose you were playing the odds, I understand. But I hope that you will still send your donation in to St Judes. Per our wager, Ron will be sending in $50 to St Judes. Because I had such an awesome day.....and also because of the outstanding bourbon donated by Ray Lyon....my wife and I will be donating $250 to St Judes in the name of ShrewHaven.
For what it's worth.....I may have won today, but Ron and Greg are both awesome competitors. Now that it's over, I will tell you that I actually expected Greg to win. He's a great shot always, but this year he's training for a bear hunt and a couple other hunts we have planned, so he is hot right now. And Ron? Heck. I couldn't hardly look at him on the course without getting rattled. Lets just say he had his "war face" on. I would HATE to compete against him in a more formal setting.
I had a great day, and I was lucky to pull it off.  :archer:
-
Congrats to Roger! And Ron! and Greg!
May I suggest a re-match to be held during the Annual Trad Gang St. Jude to keep this rolling and assist St. Jude in a bigger way?

What a wonderful day for friendly competition. Good friends having fun that revolves around traditional Bowhunting is priceless.
Wish I could have been there to witness the event (read that as be the Fourth), but alas, I had to work this weekend. Probably best for all of you that I couldn't make it. :-)
Thank you all for bringing us along on the adventure.

I think you were setup just wait until the rematch.

Just send it into St Judes...than you!

Absolutely great thread fellows I enjoyed it immensely and I really needed that. I would like to know how much was totally raised for st. Jude on this thread as we may have a second short auction soon since other folks want to contribute some other items and since this challenge was started onTradgang I'd kind of like to include it in our total especially since we're getting real close to eight hundred thousand dollars.
Thanks again guys what a great thread great job!!!
-
Hey Terry....Maybe guys could chime in and post how much they have sent in based on this thread...I'll start
I have sent $250

:clapper: :clapper:

Excellent!!!!
-
Yep, I will be sending mine anyway. Great fun guys!!
-
Good fun guys.
Looks like you have the makings of an annual st Jude shoot here. I bet competitors would travel and Trad gang members would place bets.
Still a cool day regardless..
-
I sent $25
-
We made it home last night, WOW, what a weekend. The only thing that could have made it better would have been to put a whippin on that youngster Roger :knothead: ..... :campfire:
I'll be sending my contribution to St. Jude

I'm in for another St. Jude wager!!
REDEMPTION!!
Headlines will read-
"Ron LaClair reclaims title of Michigan Stickbow Shooter Extraordinaire"
-
Roger, do you want to borrow a Widow longbow? Hope you didn't hurt Ron's widow feelings. :)
-
Denny, I know it's been a long time since you went up against a Raven longbow but I think you still remember it. :bigsmyl:
-
Hey Denny....Thanks for the offer. I think yours might be a little too stout for me. I pull those light 60 pounders. I think I will beat him with one of my Northern Mist bows.... :bigsmyl:

Roger, would you like me to pick up a Jameson's or Jameson's Reserve Black for you - I mean the winner????? ;)

You should both compete in the Silver Arrow competition and then also do 2 rounds of the turkey shoot in addition to one trip through the range. Multiply clay pigeons broken at the turkey shoot by 10 and add it to the silver arrow score and range score. Top dog is the one with the largest total score. Maybe Ole' Sagamore will have you shoot in a funky position to add some spice to the competition.

Lordy Raymond....your calculator is going to bust ;)
I'm not sure about the Silver Arrow....that's wooden arrows only....that would be my Achilles heel.

By the way Roger, I seem to recall you having some Paul Jalon built LaClair Sitka Spruce arrows at camp a few years ago. They flew like laser beams. They would make a fine arrow for the Silver Arrow shoot.
You're not making excuses already are you Sledge? :readit:

Just in case there's some that don't know that Roger and I are best of friends so the back and forth banter is just playful fun.
I wasn't all that surprised that Roger beat me last weekend, he's had some good teachers over the years. G Fred and myself have given him shooting advice, in fact last weekend I was pointing out to him a small flaw I was seeing in his release....maybe I shouldn't have told him. :saywhat:

I think you guys should host a rematch at the KyTradFest april 8,9,10 , 2016. we will have an American Round setup. Nothing like two guys competing at those ranges with 90 arrows to make sure it aint just a fluke ! Could raise a lot more money for St Judes. I'll be sending my $5o in tomorrow for this past battle of the Titans.

This thread was so good I went back and re-read it. Thanks Ron & Roger!

I missed the Elm Hall shoot due to a bunch of company in from Europe for a family reunion. I bailed out Saturday morning for the GLLI though.
Listened to Ron's new birthday poem, had a great time with an invitation to a great dinner and breakfast coffee and just really unwound.
This thread has been some of the best entertainment in a long time. Thanks to both of you. My check to St Jude's will go out tomorrow.

I wish it would have been a tie. ;)
I would have loved to have been at either event with my Shrewhaven cronies. They truly are incredible gentleman to share a campfire/camp/meal with. I still go back to the laughter (and I think I said it on the video when the TV show featured our fall camp during their deer camp special episode) and the 'therapy' associated with it as one of the great things with this camps relationships. Last Saturday night, Roger, Greg and I were sharing jabs on a group text with Ron all evening and of course Ron was busy with festivities at the GLLI shoot. Ron commented back, later that night, tongue in cheek saying 'quit clogging up my phone with your nonsense, I'm busy having fun'. In reality, we all wished we were hanging out at that campfire together.
Cheers. :archer:

Hmmm...I beat you with a recurve, then met your rematch challenge and beat you with a longbow. I was a gentleman both times and didn't post the scores any where. I wonder what Trump would do.....
-
I don't know what Trump would do, he'd probably say, "Don't bring a bow & arrow to a gun fight"
You had a couple good days and shot a higher score. I'm sure shooting in a summer league has helped your shooting. As you know my situation hasn't allowed me to get out and do much shooting this summer, if I had the results of our matches might have been different. I'm not a stranger to competition but to be at the top of your game takes practice. :archer2:
