Hey Gary, I'll Jarrods old Tall Tines with me in camp for week one!!
-
Gary talked me into it (didn't take too much talking) and surprisingly, it didn't take too much talking to gain permission from my better half.
So I'm in on Bear Quest 2016!!!!!
I talked to Tom about it tonight to confirm things and I'm really excited! June can't come soon enough.
I think I need to build myself a new longbow now specifically for this event. Green glass should blend in well with the vegetation and I definitely will have pics of the build on the Bowyers Bench.

Yeah buddy !!!
2nd week is going to be awesome with everyone in camp I can t wait

BOTH weeks FULL as of 10/20/2015'. Can't wait til JUNE 2016'.

Luckily I got in with only a couple spots available still! This will be my first time hunting bears and I don't think I could have picked a better place with better guys in camp then I did. Can't wait for June to get here!

Logan, you are in for a great time. I was considering going again this time, but before I got done considering, week one was full. I'm a week one kinda guy, lol.

Last June was my first time on Bear Quest and it proved to be a great time. Got my first Trad Kill with a 147# boar and met a great bunch of guys. Don't let the low stands and close shots intimidate you.........lol
-
Did four of them and would have loved to be part of this one. Tom puts on a super hunt and you won't meet a better bunch. Would have jumped on this one in a heartbeat but due to unforeseen circumstances I had to pass. Best of luck to those going and you won't be disappointed. Fred and Rod in camp are a bonus for sure. Did one of Rod's clinics a few years back and it was money well spent.
-
All that signed up should have recieved "LIST" (except jsweka who will have his in a couple days) for 2016' hunt if not let me know.

I got mine!! Can't wait!! I really won't start thinking about it till after ️NYs bow season.

Sounds like a real special Bear Quest! Wonder if Bowdoc needs any Kitchen Help :)

Hey Tippit, I really wish that you were going to make it this year!! But then again, it's going to give everyone else a chance at the big bear!!!!! :bigsmyl:

Can't wait. It's gonna be a great time!!

Judging bear size.....As close as Tom told me the stands are to the bait, they'll all look big to me.
-
Only thing I can share john is if the bear seems like it has short legs and or if they have 55 gallon drums with bait in them and the bears back is with the top ring of the barrel it's a good one!!
-

I think I'll have are hard time controlling my heart rate with a bear within spitting distance :scared:

I went my first time last June.......trust me, you'll know if you want to shoot. Just be calm and let it all happen. The shots are close and it is "EXCITING".....!!!!

That's my arrow in the top right of the top pic to give you an idea of how close the shot can be. You can gage the size by using the barrel as in the second picture.

Id guess that bear at around 200 to 225. It was in front of me for a good 20 mins. I held off because it was Saturday evening. I had a smaller bear come in about an hour after this
one.
-
Holding off on a bear that close....I don't think I could do it even if it was the first hour of the first evening of the hunt. But I also have never killed a bear. We'll see.

I didn't. I shot mine first evening second hour
This guys had me so petrified about the Bears I couldn't wait to get out of the stand... :biglaugh:
Looking forward to this upcoming hunt!!

Well.....I saw 11 different Bears in 3 days. By Monday I had a bear with a white blase and brown in his muzzle that went up to his brows show up. I still waited for about 20 mins before I took him. I couldnt hold off any longer!!
-
I shot my boar the first night out......got there at 4:30 and shot him at 7:30. He came in 3 times and I didn't move.......the 4th time I was ready for him and I let him have it. Every time he came in he looked right up at me.......at 6-7 yards.

I think I could pick one that looked good to me out of 11 :goldtooth:

Question for you guys that have been on previous Bear Quests....With that many bears that close, how many extra pairs of skivvies do you recommend I bring to camp?
-
That was an awesome year. Out of 10 hunters, 7 of us took home bears and all 10 had multiple shot opertunaties. I had a ton of laughs, and made some good friends. I wish that I was able to make more of them through the years.
-

It should be on Toms mail out packet...2, he includes a hand wash laundry service!! :saywhat:

I really need to get back there.Came close but I waited too long but I will return.Kip

On my first, everyone had multiple shot opportunities. And there were 12 of us I think. Maybe more. Uncle Barry took his camera out every night. If I remember right On one of his hunts he recorded eleven bears.
There's some really funny stories on some of the past BQ threads. I'm gonna bring a 10' long poky stick into the stand with me. Or just someone a lot slower than me whom I can out run!!
-
wow kip I think our bears were brothers!!

Uncle Barry had to cancel BQ 6 so I never got to share s camp with him. Mine was the first bear taken that week. He only went 60 yards and dropped. I was able to drag him out and load him in my truck myself. I picked up Tippit and brought him back to camp. I took the pick at night and the only thing that I could find to prop his head up with was a cement boat anchor!!

All will have a great time. That is one of my favorite places. I would go every year if I could. The way this years is starting I think it will be good. 7 pages so far and the hunt is still 6 months away.

Good lookin Bears guys!
I told the news of the hunt to my boys tonight at bedtime
( David 9 and William 8 ) and after a few moments of wide eyed amazement I had them guess who would be at the camp with me......
Their first two guesses were my hunting buddy Travis and brother Caleb but then I told them that I had never met this fellow in person......
David proped himself up off his pillow onto his elbow and looked me straight in the eye, "Fred Eichler" he said!!!!!! :
:campfire:
-
You really want close on #8 I had one 2 feet from me almost sticking his head in my blind opening. I was back against the back of the blind thinking am I going to have to stick him in the eye? what am I going to do? Prior to that he was really acting up throwing down logs snapping his jaws and roaring.LOL I thought to myself this is going to get interesting when he came so close. I talked to myself God if you want this bear to eat me I aint going down without a fight even though I walked in with a cane and got into the blind. Told myself to be still and wait till he turns. When he did to go to bait I tried to draw on him and let him have it. He herd the arrow sliding across the shelf and looked back and just that quick jumped and ran. He was all of maybe 10 feet from me he really wasn't that spoked he came back on the bait in about 10 minutes.LOL
I could barely hear the arrow slide myself but he sure did. I wanted so bad to shoot him with the Kodiak Hunter zebra bow I just had redone. Its a blast and lots of bears you should see. I didn't favor being on the ground with them bears but I didn't have much choice I couldn't climb some guy with long legs set the pegs in the tree stand. LOL
Great place well worth it just wait and see who hasn't been up yet. I would have been back at # 9 but a car accident held me back with a concussion but # 10 I aint missing and can't wait. Everything you herd is all true and then some. This hunt is the best thing going you will love it. Make sure you have 2 thermo cells and plenty of refills you will def. need it.
-
I had a very hard time judging bears at first myself and let 2 bears go I think I should have shot at. Then when I thought I had the size down a bit I missed one the next night. The bear walked over to the arrow and smelled it and walked off not spoked just thought he knew something was up and time to leave dodge.LOL I shot right over the bear that double bull blind I had was hard to shoot out of and I had practiced at home in it and thought I had it down. It all changes when they are live and close and nerves are wired when its show time.LOL
I had a bear that I wounded he had me so wired and there was so much going on with him there were so many times I was going to lose an arrow at him probably a good 6 times I drew and let down on him.LOL
Then he takes the barrel and turns it facing me and sits up and was going to shoot him in the chest and then felt no he will eventuly settle down and give me a brood side shot I want. He turned going away and I felt I could thread an arrow in him and I was a little far back hitting his back leg he let out a little cry as he left with the arrow in him. I gave it a little bit and got out of blind and saw blood and got back in blind hoping and praying and wondering is it going to result in a bear or just a wound? Possibly did I hit his Femoral? When I got back to camp I told the guys what happened the next morning Tom and a couple others trailed the bear 500 yards I think it was that the bear carried the arrow. He was bleeding then the arrow was found and blood lost.So no bear for me other than that it was my fault with missing 2 others I think it was if I recall. I went the 2nd week. The 1rst week I herd a good one came off stand a P and y bear that they said a 2nd bear was with that bear as big? Not sure if I shot that 2nd one or not but it sure was one I wanted. I saw a couple other bears that were rubbed pretty good so passed on shooting at them. I had another bear walk right past me a nice one that was rubbed bad. I didn't realize they can be patched up some by the taxi. You learn a lot on trips and this one I learned a little about bears. Was I nervous I sure was every night and the night I wounded that bear I was thinking what if he's wounded and near by and really ticked off at me and I'll met up with him in the dark back to my truck?LOL
I also had to manage my sugars with the insulin each day so I didn't go low and pass out. I was really thankful of all the checking on me before I went out each day. I was prepaired well and watched what I did and ate.
I only got to hunt one stand the long trail because of the blind I had with me. I hope this year to be able to climb with getting a new hip hoping to get real soon then I'll be good to go.
If anyone has any health issues to watch? Don't keep it to yourself, make sure you tell everyone it's important so everyone knows what to watch for to help ya if you need it. I hope to meet new friends also on this trip. The other guys were the best and very helpful and it was very enjoyable. I loved it. Toms the best and a heck of a great area that's proven and set up fantastic.

Look forward to meeting you Glenn

What is everyone doing to prepare for this hunt?

Just shooting!! I'm playing around with some stuff. I just aquired a '66 Kodiak 60' 55# @ 28 that I'm going to have Gary Hall make up some arrows for. I'd be cool to take a bear with a 50 Y/O Bear!! :goldtooth: I'm also going to bring my BW KB X.
-
This is the bear I took on my first trip to Bear Quest. Hope you fellas all have a great hunt!

-
Nice shot Bill!! I'm thinking of borrowing a camera to try to film my hunt.
-
Yes! Nice shot Bill!
I don't know if I could have waited that long to take a shot, but maybe I better so that I can calm my nerves.
I've been working on two bows - one for Gary Hall and one for Brian Robinson. I'm not sure if they'll use them during the upcoming Bear Quest or not and it will depend on how comfortable they can get with them between now and then.
As for me...I've been practicing with the reverse handle Hill style bow I made just for this hunt. At the beginning and end of each practice session, I shoot a group within 10 yards for a confidence builder. I call these my "Bear Quest" shots.
I also have some arrows coming to me from Gary - a trade for the bow I'm sending his way.
Man I can't wait! Not just for the hunt and the good times with ya'll, but also a week away from it all! No computer, no internet, no cell phone, and no work!
-
Greatshot Bill!! And best of luck to all you guys attending seems like one HECK of a Crew I am sure there will be lots of laughs

I remember that week Bill. We skinned a bunch of bears. That was a fun hunt.
-
Nice one Bill, great shot!
I've been practicing 3-5 yard shots! Tom puts us up close and personal :scared:

Sounds as if several of my friends are going on this hunt, wish you all the luck in the world fellas!

Check, check, check and check
Looking forward to an update on the baiting trip this weekend :campfire:

Tom and I are driving home from the first bait run. We put a lot of blood sweat and tears in setting things up. I definitely appreciate this hunt a little more now that Ive seen how much time and work Tom puts into this. It's definitely a labor of love!
Don't foget your passports, and if you're driving your own vehicle make sure that you have a spare tire in good working order.
-
10 days for the first group!!
-
I'll leave home in 16 days. Heading to Gary Hall's on Thursday and then on to Quebec on Friday. Wow. I was counting down months, then weeks, now it's days!!!!!
I was practicing shooting from a seated position tonight. I can do it at "Bear Quest range" but would obviously rather shoot from a standing position. When I'm whitetail hunting I always stand up at first sight of a deer and and never get busted doing so.
So a question for you bear hunting veterans - How easy is it to stand up in a stand for a shot at a bear without spooking it?
-

John, the shots are real close... 8-10 yards and the stands are low, about 8 ft. A Bear can really pick up on movement. My suggestion would be to shoot from a seated position. You don't want to take that chance with that bear in tight.
-
You want to shoot seated. The shots are close. The bears might pick up some movement and seated gives you a little better angle. You want to make sure that you get both lungs.
-
Thanks guys. I'll keep practicing those seated shots.
-
Yep, what Nate said. I have been to Bear Quest twice. Every time I tried to stand I was busted. I killed a bear on each trip from a seated position.
-
Last year the stand I was in my feet were at 6', and the barrel was 8 steps away. I shot from the seated position and all worked out fine. Best of luck to all you guys on Bear Quest #10.
-
OK, I've taken all your advice about a seated position for shooting. I put up my ladder stand in the back yard. It's about 9' to the bottom of the platform. I put my target out at 10 yards and shot from the stand in a seated position. My first group of arrows felt a bit awkward, but I dialed right in after that. I'll be practicing like that over the next 15 days. I had my son retrieving arrows for me and told him that will be his job each night until I leave.
-
We also have a stand set up in camp for target practice.
-
I did four Bear Quests and in four years three arrows, three bear. On my feet for each one and not a shot over 10 yards.
-
I would move that target in to about 5 yards. They will be close. The shots on the two bears that I killed up there were measured in feet not yards.
-

-
Bowdoc like his stands low enough that he can just set on it, without climbing! Of course no self respecting bear would get caught anywhere close to him, let alone eat him, so he's safe!I've seen more meat on a chicken wing!

Guess, I can stop working on my 30 yd shot for the time being and spend some time shooting seated :D
Looking forward to the hunt and sharing a camp!

My first one was 6' up and 10' from the base of the tree. I recall a Bowboc story where he fell asleep in the tree with his feet dangling out of the stand. Bear walked under the stand and brushed his feet with his back!

A bear may take him and burry him though!!!!

Put a stand up last night to practice sitting down as I always stand to shoot at deer.....

I found that being this low and having close shots that it was quit comfortable to shoot sitting!

Bowdoc's odor is guaranteed to keep everything away, except hairless bears! Those he attracts, especially the sows! I don't think BD knows what a bear with hair looks like! :biglaugh:

I really don't care what the body of the bear looks like. Hairless is fine. I'm just looking for fuzzy head with nice ears for a head mount.

Id say upper 70's. We were doing a lot of physical labor so it seemed hotter. Sunday it rained and was humid. I'd definitely pack a mid weight jacket or shirt. I'd also make sure I'd have knee high rubber boots. Some places are really boggy

Looks like the extended forecast for the first couple days of week one is light rain and partly cloudy skies, High Temps in the mid 60's. Sounds like a break from what we've been getting in Texas!
Besides, what's a few wet feet to a bunch of STUDS! :biglaugh:

Sean - I don't even know what Ziti is  , but it sounds good! If you get your bear early, maybe you can make up a batch in camp for second week :saywhat: Today will be my final day of bareshaft confirmation before I hack a dozen Bear Quest 10 Special Medicine Arrows. These will also be my 2016 Iowa Whitetail arrows... :campfire: Good Providence to all!

It's baked MACARONI, with meat sauce covered in mozzarella
Ziti is simply a tube shaped pasta

I imagine that ziti has either been devoured by hungry hunters or used as bait by now.

I had great activity the entire week passed on a bunch waiting for the big one that I saw. After giving me the slip a few times during the week, I got a crack at him on Thursday. It looked like a good hit, quartering away arrow up to the fletching. Lost blood in a thick marshy area. We grid searched for hours but no recovery. The guys that were there could tell that it was killing me although I tried my best not to let it show. Fred Eichler put his hand on my shoulder and said "oh man, I'm sorry. It happens to the best of us". But other than that, it was an awesome week as usual

Sean and I got home late Saturday night. What a great time. Great memories made and new friends as well. Tom Phillips puts together one hell of a hunt. I could not hold off and killed my bear the first evening. A woodsman broadhead from my BW recurve put him down withinn 50 yards. But I enjoyed helping Tom and the other guys in camp and had plenty of time to relax and reflect on my hunt. I can't post pics right now but maybe one of the other guys will soon. Tony Z

You won't regret it. I didn't go into detail about my hunts. Each evening on stand was more exciting than the next. Hearing big beats pop thier jaws at you, bluff charge and roar is pretty intense.
-
Pop jaws, throw down logs and growl and shake the ground around you with a bow in hand and then stick his head nearly in your blind looking for yu. Then he's a couple feet from you and you draw and and ready to drive one through him and he hears the arrow accross shelf and looks back at ya and no shot. I'd say that's intense.LOL
You don't know what your going to experience and it could be almost anything.LOL Its a wild experience for sure. Can't wait till get back myself. Since you left a few they will be bigger and honryer too.
As you know Shawn I could not get there. Last week and this week I questioned myself could I have made the run then made the trip and handled it. Maybe or maybe not it was worth the try but not worth the issue others might have had to deal with should anything gone wrong. I'm in pain over missing this bad mental pain and angry.LOL
-
Bummer Sean,
Congrats Tony, nice Bear!

Congrats Tony, great bear.

Well, the Arkansaw "bunch" finally got settled back in at home. This was a first bear hunt for me and my 3 boys and I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys to be around, even if they talk funny and have trouble understanding proper Arkansawian :D We made lots of new friends and lots of great memories and will definitely have to do this again. Guys, if you have never been, Tom puts together a great hunt, and like you have probably heard, shots up close and personal!

A super big Thank You to Tom Phillips, Bowdoc and all of the guys! This truly is one of the highlights for me each year. It's hard to keep track, but I think this was my 9th trip. As Sam mentioned, Tom really does put on a great hunt and he sets you up for some close encounters, if you are willing and interested in getting in tight with the bears.
During the first week, everyone had opportunities. I believe we had 12 bears cross the border into the US at the end of the week. Now, those Arkansas boys are killers.. and not just ducks. No doubt about it! It was great seeing Sam's 3 boys rolling into camp with bears, especially when they are new to bear hunting. It makes me remember my first trip years ago. I could see and feel the excitement in the boys. That alone made the trip worth while. We had a super group of guys in camp.
I am still getting settled, but more stories, some pics and videos will be coming. After skipping the first evening, I saw 7-9 bears over the next 3 days. My hunt wrapped up on Tuesday with my first critter taken with a longbow. I also managed to capture it all on video. Stay tuned... I will see if I can get it posted in the next day or two.
-
Sam,
You should be very proud. Your three young men were great to be around. I'm glad we got to spend some time with all three . You did good 3x ! Congratulations to all of the "bunch".
-
Awesome stuff guys!!
-
Hey Sam. That's a river cane "ARRAH". Don't start talking like some darn Yankee. It was great to see you and your bunch have success. Tony Z.
-
That can't be Bowdoc's bear in the picture...that bear has hair!!!
-
:biglaugh: And it's bigger than Bowdoc........
-
Ha! No "mohawk" on Bowdoc's bear this year. Come to think of it, not many bears were rubbed and most had great looking coats. The week two guys should do well... There were a few big ones roaming around too. I would love to see a few hero photos with a few of those big ones.
I finally got to upload a few pics last night...
It must be terrible to wake up to sites like this all the time.

-
Bisch and Bob,
You guys hooked me on the added insurance you get on bears with a string tracker.
If nothing else when you are tracking a bear that never made a death moan and trail goes up a steep ridge, you can always tug on that line a few times before you crest the top. Some times you just want to make sure ...
:biglaugh:

-
... yep, you bet I did! Tug.. Tug.. TTTUUUGGG.
Felt like I had a lunker on that line.
-
Hello Sam.....this is "Shoan"......hey it was great to meet you and your "Bunch". It was great to see you all tag out as a family. I have to say that that was one of the many highlights of the hunt for me!!
Jay, more pics!!!!! I still have more to down load.
It's been a week and I'm still dreaming about Quebec.!! We should get an update from the week two guys by the end of the day today!!
-
I am hoping one of the week two guys is bringing this fella home.
I knew this bear was big, but I have watched these videos after getting home and he is bigger than I thought! He dwarfs that drum!

Again, a HUGE thank you to Tom Phillips for making this hunt happen.
My story...
After arriving in camp Saturday morning, we all drew our stands out of a hat. I would be hunting the "Blow Down", a water bait. I immediately thought of the story where years back, Zack had to wait for the boat out in knee deep water because an aggressive bear followed him down to the water's edge.
After a quick lunch, we headed out to bait and hang a couple extra stands. Fred, Jeb and I would partner up for the next couple of days so we loaded up the boat. Fred and Jeb would hunt the Moose Tower stand. Since I knew where all the baits are {and after recalling Zack's story}, I volunteered to drive the boat. Off we went and got our stands hung. Everything was looking good and the baits were hit hard.
The first evening, I elected to stay in camp and drop off & pick up Fred and Jeb. After driving all night and being up for 36 hours, I didn't have confidence that I could think through my shot sequence if the right opportunity was presented.
Off we went....

There were definitely some big ones left in the woods!!
-
Alright you week two guys, did anyone take a monster off of the bowl?
...back to my story in a bit
-
Come Sunday, the rain started. It was chilly and coming down for most of the day. We elected to delay heading to the stands. I had packed mostly for mid to high 70 degree weather and the first couple days may not have gotten out of the 50's.
I left it to Jeb and Fred if they wanted to go or at what time. I knew they were filming so I wasn't certain how well the weather worked for them. Fred said lets wait until 5 and then head out. Out came my rain gear and fortunately I had packed some UA "cold gear" just in case. I would have been perfectly happy to stay in but I am glad there was an extra nudge to head out.
The first evening, I saw at least 3 different bears, maybe 5, and I learned the pattern of how they would come in. The stand was about 100 yards off the lake and facing up the little mountain. The bears all seemed to come in from the ridge to my left, circle around behind me, and ultimately come in on the right, on the same trail I would walk in on. Most bears would silently appear about 30 yards to my right. I made a mental note and that pattern held true every day I hunted.
That first night, I had a chubby sow quartering away at about 5 steps for about 15 minutes. ...just not quite big enough. I knew bigger bears had to be around.
-
Monday came and again more rain. It was coming down and some high wind gusts too. Fortunately, the weather let up by the time we headed out. Still cold but the evening was marked only by the occasional sprinkle.
On Monday, things were a bit slow for me. Only one bear sighting. I still wasn't quite "feeling it" and the weather should be breaking soon.
After reviewing my game cam, I learned that 2 or 3 bears came in that morning before the weather turned south again.
-
On Tuesday, the weather broke. Sunshine and higher temps... finally! Things were looking up and it was one of those days you love to be in a stand. Now that the weather cleared, I decided to break out my video camera and take it along.
The evening was gorgeous. One of those blue bird days.
At 6:30 I had the first bear come in. Unfortunately, I glanced to my right and saw a black head emerge from behind a tree at about 8 yards. I didn't know he was coming in and we both made eye contact at the same time. The bear and I were both slightly started. He turned and headed up the mountain at a steady slow pace. I never got a good look but noticed what appeared to be a good, flat head. He might have been a nice one but no shot was ever presented.
15 or 20 minutes later, a chubby sow waltzed in like she owned the place. I think it might have been my buddy from Sunday night. I guess she knew she was safe. We hung out for about 20 minutes scarfing down some goodies. I managed to get some good video of her and the encounter allowed me to work through my shakes and excitement of another up close bear encounter. :)

The sow had me off my butt and on my feet. It seemed things were happening a bit earlier today and the bears activity had been steady so far. I figured it was in my best interest to stay standing for a while.
About 20 minutes later, I glanced to my left and caught some black movement creeping up the swampy draw to my left. Once it cleared a few trees about 30 away, I got a better look. Long legs, thick trunk with no taper...I think this was a good boar. I had some sow in heat spray in the pocket of my safety vest. What could it hurt? I squirted a few pumps into the air. The wind had been variable and changing directions all day, and this bear was not following the pattern of the others.
A few minutes later he changed direction and was moving my way.
I flipped on the video camera and waited to see what unfolded. He looked good, but I wasn't sure if he was the one.
He hit the stand site and looked around. Casually he glances around but notice a quick glance my way. He grabs a few marshmellows and glances up at me again... and then again. Now he is strolling to the base of my tree. "Why do they always do this to me?" I thought to myself. I am only about 8 feet off the ground and I am not a fan of visitors joining me in my tree, even if they are only curious. When he got to within 3 feet of the base of my tree, I reached down below the base of my platform and snapped my fingers. He paused and slowly turned and walked the other direction. Now until this point, I wasn't sure if I would pass or not. He didn't blow out of there on a run, which I knew could happen. He slowly walked away from the base of my tree. I decided that if the right opportunity was presented I would give him a try.

Nice job J. Is that at blowdown? Beautiful bear.
-
Great story and video, Jay!

That is the blowdown.

Nice bear Jay :clapper:
A bear was not sighted out of Blowdown this week....
-
Folks,
I have to show you one more thing..
I hadn't home 3 days when I found a package on my doorstep. At first I didn't pay any attention to the shipping label. A bit later, I went to open it and noticed it was from Chad K (Kuch).
This was the second or third year that I hunted with Kuch and some friends. We always had a great time! He will also have you laughing so hard that you might blow beer out of your nose at least once during the week.
Inside the package I found a very nice note and this...
A Puukko knife that Chad had recently finished. This thing is gorgeous! Not to mention that it is probably one of the sharpest knives I have ever seen! The blade was hand forged by a second generation Finnish knife maker. I was floored!
Chad, I am not sure I am worthy but I won't be sending this back. :) You are a fantastic guy and I hope we share a camp again! Thank you for all the help skinning my bear, sharpening my knives, flushing my sinus cavity out with Bud Light. It was a great week!
Thank you! I am happy to know you, Joe and Larry all made it home safe.
We'll all get together for a hunt or some fishing in the future.

Pretty cool stuff Mr. Addair......

What a great video. Thanks for sharing.

It's not my story to tell but this is a little teaser from weak two........
:campfire:
-
Was that off of the Bowl?
-
Jay...Nice shot, great bear, great video, and that string tracker was pretty cool. Did it go all the way to the bear? How many yards did he go? How much did your bear weigh in?
Was it a cold spring? The bears all seemed to have great coats without any rubs.
-
WOW 305......that's twice what mine was last year, That's a biggun..........
-
Hi Jeff,
We miss you up there. The string tracker is pretty cool and I figured it couldn't hurt. The line did go all the way to the bear, two lines, one white and one red. I think he made it 60 or 70 yards. The blood trail was awesome all the way, but the tracker added a little extra insurance ...just in case.
All the bears I saw personally or on my game cameras had beautiful coats. It kind of felt like it might have been a late spring up there. Temps ranged from 39 - mid 70's while we were there.
He ended up being 205#.
-
Hmmm... the suspense of that teaser is getting to me.
You guys drive safe!

Those long haired thick coats are usually indicative of a more severe/ longer previous winter. When you see a single bear with a lot longer hair than most of the others in the area it's usually because he did not den well and mother nature made his coat thicker to try to keep him warmer until spring. bw
-
Jay,
Great video. Congrats.
God bless,
-
Great stuff Jay!! Chad, what a beauty of a knife, and very generous of you!! It was great hunting with you guys. I haven't laughed that hard in a long long time!!
There was still snow when we went on the bait run in some of the low spots in the shade. Every bear that I saw had s beautiful coat. Bowdoc had to settle for a bigger bear with a full coat. I know it was killing him!!
-
I see bears are still liking to check you out in the tree Jay! I remember your first year on the "bird" stand.
Thanks for the story and videos, Well Done!

Bear Quest was the best hunt hands down I have ever been on. The guys in camp on week 2 were some of the best I have ever been in the woods with. BOWDOC was awesome entertainment and a fantastic guy to have in camp will miss that little old man.
This morning I needed a cup that crazy guys coffee lol!! TOM did an amazing job never saw that man stand still once always on the move taking care of the hunters and making sure we had what we needed Tom is a top hand for sure. And the best outfitter I have ever had the pleasure to hunt with.
I feel a made a new friend hanging out with Matty just a great guy and best boat captain on the water as long as he had the boat between the lines. He videoed my Bear hunt we set out after a Bear he named Carl I did get an arrow in him and it just breaks my heart that we could not find him nothing worse then hurting a beautiful animal, really feel just awful right now. Matty sure helped me keep my spirits up in camp. All you guys at camp you truly made my hunt and it would a honor and pleasure to hunt with you again. And I want to let all you know that I made it home safe and sound with getting cut by Rod LOL!!
MATTY keeping it between the lines

Just finally waking up after rolling in at 4am this morning, my second day in a week being up more than 24 hours time to chime in. This was my second time up to Bear Quest, I went in without hesitation as it truly is the best hunt/time you will have tom puts on something very special working around the clock to make sure everyone has a shot at bears, is relaxed and comfortable, well fed and well entertained by this clown.

Unless you have met Don Ward AKA. BOW DOC you Havnt lived....My first time up to camp and meeting this man I thought holy smokes what did I get myself into? Hunting with strangers off the internet and then this guy.... I surely will not be getting out alive
-
Won't bore you with the logistics of my trip but I rolled into bearcamp on 30+ hours of no sleep I was exhausted. Everyone met up in town, we had a short visit with the week one guys in the sporting goods store and then on to camp. Picked our stands out of the hat we were all set. Even though I picked a proven winner of a stand I opted to sit out the first night. As I couldn't even see straight I was so tired. I knew however I would be in for a good week when this happened...

Oh BowDoc......... :readit:
But I'm guna miss that oll fart greeting me in the morning and then asking in a quit voice " you ready for some coffee" ?
Then he'd say " Get your shooting hand away from the cup so I won't burn it" as he would do his one eyed coffee pour.....
Mattys quot of the week was " BowDocs a National Treasure or somthing". :biglaugh:
Goofy as $#%&, but a heart of Gold!!!!!

Meeting these guys was a trip, As Gary mentioned great relationships were established. I had been looking forward to meeting everyone for some time. Travis (KAZ) and I had been exchanging text messages for about a month prior. So I was excited to put a face to the names of people. He and Ben were a class act. 2 Really good guys. Here's the group photo. Us holding a sign that Ben made. (One for each of us) missing from the pic is Rod Jenkins. Who was sleeping at the time. He was the only one brave enough to get up at the butt crack of dawn to brave the Bears.

Wow! If I would have had any more fun, I would have been arrested.
I didn't bag a bear, but what a blast!!
I drew the Mile Marker 41 stand, but like Matty, I decided to take it easy and catch up on some rest the first night. Here's a summary of my week.
Sunday: I saw a sow and a little cub and then a big boy kept circling and approaching the bait, but would not commit. He was grunting and popping his jaws the whole time. I must admit my you know what was a little puckered when I got down from my stand.
Monday: A nasty thunderstorm rolled in and chased me out of the stand early with no sightings.
Tuesday: Again no sightings, but the bait was hit hard.
Wednesday: I borrowed Paul's trail cam and put it up. At 9:05 pm I was looking down one trail, but when I turned my head back around a big bear sneaked in on me and was only about 2 yards behind the bait. I started to reach for the string and got busted and away it went back up the trail.
Thursday: A couple other guys checked my bait and pulled the sd card from the trail cam while I was out helping recover another hit bear. Turns out that 21 minutes after I left my stand Wednesday night, the big bear was back. There were actually two big bears hitting the bait. So although I wasn't getting many sightings of bears, I decided to "go big or go home" and opted to stick things out at the MM41 stand.
Thursday night was basically a repeat of Wednesday night with a big bear coming down the same trail at 9:15 pm, but this time I was ready and saw it coming. My fingers were already on the string, but for some reason, it got to the same spot as it did the previous night and then bolted back up the trail. I have no idea why. When I told Tom I had a repeat of the previous night, he said we were gonna change things up to try to fool this guy. Maybe it was patterning me and maybe it knew to look at the stand before committing to the bait?????
Friday: Tom and I checked the bait and it was hit hard again. We checked the trail cam and again there were two big bears on it after I had left. So we left the stand where it was and added a new stand thinking that the bear(s) may look at the original stand and seeing nobody in it would then commit to the bait and not notice me in my new ambush spot. We re-baited and put a satellite pile of bait outside of the drum in a good shooting lane from the new stand.
Friday night: Tom loaded me up with everything under the sun to bring a bear in - honey burn, bacon burn, marsh mellows, etc. Perched in my new stand, things were the same as every other night of the week with lots of squirrels and hares running around while I waited for daylight to fade. Then about 9:10 a big bear began approaching from the trail opposite to where it normally came from. It started toward the bait, got directly behind me, but then turned around and backed out. It was pacing around, but then finally came back, and walked the trail behind me directly to the bait and I was so far unnoticed. It turned and started eating the satellite bait pile, but the way it was standing put it somewhat quartering towards me and I didn't feel comfortable attempting a shot. I kept thinking "turn damn it, turn!" After a couple minutes of feeding it finally turned and put its front leg forward offering my shot opportunity. I started to draw and got to about half way when it's head popped up, looked around quickly, and then it took off. Busted again!!!! So close!!!
I climbed down a few minutes later as my shooting light disappeared. It was disappointing that I didn't get a shot, but heck, I got all the thrill of drawing on a big bear without the work that comes after it - LOL. That was well worth the price of admission. I started packing out my gear and Tom and Paul showed up to help me take down and carry out the two tree stands.
What a great week! Made some new friends, had many laughs, had some close encounters with some big bears, and enjoyed the deep conversations with Bowdoc.
I'll definitely be heading back. Maybe not next year, but soon.
TOM - THANK YOU FOR PUTTING ON SUCH A GREAT HUNT FOR ALL OF US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure some of the successful week 2 hunters will be chiming in with some stories, so I won't mention who killed what.
-
John, that's exactly what Tommy's hunts are all about. You had a helluva experience, good for you. Hunting bears over bait isn't exactly like shooting fish in a barrel, like some people mistakenly believe. Add to that experience, the sage wisdom of BowDoc, and you couldn't ask for much more on a hunt, Ha!. Glad you got to go.
Shick
-
John,
That is what it's all about! If I know there is a Big Bear coming in...well you know it's like hunting a Big Buck. That was an extremely exciting hunt...Congrats. Tom will do anything to help get it done...tippit
-
Being in the stand from the start was quite the show. However I went in to this with the intent that I would sit be calm ant spend time watching what was in the area before I shot at something.
Night one at 7:30 I was getting scoped out by the local guy who I nicknamed "Carl" (walking dead fan) always getting into trouble. I filmed this guy for about 10 minutes and he hung around the stand for an hour before I decided to let the bait rest and climb out here's a pic of Carl.
(http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee256/krakka17/Mobile%20Uploads/image_1.png) (http://s234.photobucket.com/user/krakka17/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_1.png.html)
Day 2 brought in some more action. I saw Carl again and another bear who got startled by something and was crashing through the woods at full speed and who ended up running right under me. I'd say that I would not want to be in the way of a bear of any size running full steam ahead! The storm John mentioned earlier was rolling in and I was on a water stand which meant I had a boat ride wasn't long before Gary and I were braving the 1' swells
-
Looks like a great time was had by all....... :clapper:
-
Way to go Matty! I know you did your part to keep everyone laughing too. Boy do I miss being North of the Border.

Bear Quest 10
I had the privilege of sharing camp with a wonderful group of men I now call friends. I could not of scripted a better cast of characters to live out a common dream we know as the Traditional Bowhunting Journey. I'm mindful to focus on the Journey, for the destination is never really a place or animal, but a lifelong pursuit of fulfillment that only God can grow, water, enrich, restore, and sustain... :saywhat: It was a pleasure sharing camp with you this week. Well done & Thank you.
Ben Holtz
As many know here on Trad-Gang, Ben and I are good friends from the same locale in Iowa. We've been looking forward to this adventure for a long time. Well the trip has finally come & gone, but the memories will be cherished & last a life-time. I am happy for you! Well done my friend...
Old Friends Sean B & Tony Z
It was great meeting up with you on Saturday in La Tuque upon the close of your hunt, and the beginning of mine. Sean B, Tony Z, and I shared a 2012 Maine Bear Camp with Squapan Mountain Outfitters along with the Black Widow Boys... I enjoyed our time together. I'm glad you both had a successful hunt! Take care gentlemen.
Instead of disrupting the continuity of the incredible stories to come on this thread, I will open up a separate thread accessible via a Link on this one in the days to come. This way others may look at their leisure of the wonderful creatures God has created. Look for "KAZ on Resurrection"... Thank you to all for creating an environment for a wonderful adventure! :campfire:
Thank you Lord

Thanks Kaz! You were awesome and that was spot on!!

Congratulations to everyone on a successful hunt whether you tagged bear or not. Haven't heard from my good friend Tim Nuss?
Also, did Matty happen to stick his tongue out for y'all?

Bill - Yes!!! We did see that long Gene Simmons-like tongue of Matty's. (And a few comments were made ;) )
-
Looks like a great trip. Matty, congrats on the bear.
-
I don't think there are many things that get
Bow-Doc nerves but just look at his face......
That's a look of " Wheres the back door, I'm getting out of here " or is that a smile!?!?!?!
(http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p443/BEH160/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0089.jpg) (http://s347.photobucket.com/user/BEH160/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0089.jpg.html)

:biglaugh: :biglaugh:
-
I dont think I would tempt Bowdoc that way.
-
I agree with you Nate,
Bowdoc has that Cheshire Cat look...that could become a very short tongue in a wink of an eye :scared:
-
Not much to say that hasn't be said.
Best group I've ever shared a camp with !
Bowdoc is one of a kind!
Tom goes the extra mile for everyone in camp!
Lots of Bears!
Thanks!
-
Can't wait to hear about the bear that weighed 305# . Don't know what the Bear Quest record is but I'd guess that's got to be close if not it. :campfire:
-

I just came as close to peeing my pants as a I could have. Laughing so hard. Oh man some rep I'm gonna have around here! Bill I'm sure Tim will chime in too.
As for the 306 I'm hoping we don't have to tell the story for him. We were all so happy for this guy. If I'm not mistaken
Tippit currently is still the reigning champ but we have a new runner up I think. Maybe I'll drop a teaser pic in a bit.
-
Matty, you know I just had to post that thing!!!
:readit: :goldtooth:
And if he dosnt pipe up soon we will have to try and unfold his story as best we can.....
He's probably still in Anaphylactic Shock from talking to the Taxidermist..... You want how much $$$$$?!?!?!?

-
Jay. Congrats on your bear. Super hunt with your camera. Missed being there with u and the guys this yr. Looks like u have become a longbow guy.
-
I'm waiting to hear the story too. But I'm sure Barry is because that was His stand!
A 300 pound class Quebec Spring Black Bear is a very respectable bear anywhere but especially in North Country. I was lucky enough to take two 300 pounders...309 & 329 pounds by Tom's official reading. He wouldn't even give me the extra pound to round them off :)

Though there were some very large bears lurking around "Resurrection", the 305.6lb bear was not harvested there.......... :saywhat:

I have some inside info and let's just say I took a spill on the slippery rocks into the lake the last time I baited it :)

Oops, I thought I read that...no matter sounds like a great Bear.

Indeed.... A great bear :goldtooth:

Paul Lewis was the 3rd Trad-Ganger to join the 300 CLUB in last 10 years !! 329#,309#,305# & 301# personally weighted by me.
It was good to hear that everyone made it home safe & sound.Bear Quest again was a team effort with everyone chipping in to track & skin bears, check baits.............etc etc.that is why the hunt is such a success & funfilled. Before we left camp 6/25 I spoke to Outfitter and am looking forward to him showing us more territory for NEW water baits as well as some land baits as well for 2017'.
-
Sorry guys I haven't had time yet to sit down and write the story of the 305 bear. I am writing this on my lunch break. when I get some free time I'll sit down and do it justice.

Yep, bring on the story.... :campfire:

I'm on it

As the guys have alluded to, I too have a story to tell :scared:
(http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p443/BEH160/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0016.jpg) (http://s347.photobucket.com/user/BEH160/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0016.jpg.html)
The First night I set up my trail cam and got all set for the 5 1/2 hour sit.
Two Snowshoe hares and multiple Red Squirrels were my only companions that night but I did hear a couple of sticks snap out at about 45 or 50 so felt curtain that there was a bear out on the perimeter.
The next morning we freshened the bait and pulled the SD card and there was a Big Oll Fatty there about 20 min after I had gotten down :scared:
I was satisfied to be patient for a few days to see if I could get a peak at this bear.....
After the third night without a sighting I decided a change of scenery was in order.
So on Tues evening I sat Hillbilly!
This is a water bait and Bears had been shot off of it the previous week as well as one of our own who shot his on Sunday night with reports of other bears seen
-
:campfire: :campfire:
-
So Tuesday evening found me looking over HillBillys bait....
The evening was void of bears but I was entertained by a Very dominate/territorial squirrel that was claiming the bait site as his own.....
He would clime up on top of the barrel, throw his head back and let out the loudest 15 to 20 second chatter that would remind you of a lion or somthing :scared:
On Tuesday Tom said it wasn't time to panic if we hadn't seen a bear, but this was EOD Wed......
With renewed vigor I signed the Boat Permit form on Wed evening which allowed me to operate the boat on my own. The plan was set, I would be heading to Hillbilly in the a.m.
Id be lying if didn't say I was a little nerves about logistics of getting me to my stand in the pitch dark in a boat going to a spot that id only been to twice in the daylight :help:
Did I mention that id never driven a boat before.....
Nothing like the present to learn, besides, whats the worst that could happen :banghead:
Time to get down....
-
Up till now I was staying positive knowing that it was just a matter of time but our 7 day hunt was winding down and I didn't feel like I was in the game at all.....
Plan "E" was beginning to take shape  :campfire:
-
Gary and I headed out to our spots and after I dropped him off I was on my side of the lake by 4:30.
(http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p443/BEH160/Mobile%20Uploads/FullSizeRender_43.jpg) (http://s347.photobucket.com/user/BEH160/media/Mobile%20Uploads/FullSizeRender_43.jpg.html)
Its about 100 yards to the stand from the lake and its a gradual up hill climb.
About halfway up I see something black about 75 yards uphill to my right, Its a Bear!!!!!
I stay really still and notice that its making its way down hill and angling my way
I hunker down and nock an arrow but moments later it straightens out and goes straight down hill probably for a mid afternoon drink....
I proceed to my stand spraying my Bear Attractant Spray like it was going out of style :goldtooth:
All set in my stand with both thermocells going by 4:50.....
At 5:15 I'm looking at the ground just over my knees and something about the shadow of my tree looks funny, " Ill be darned if my trees shadow dosnt look like a bears head", then it moved
-
Yep, my buddy was back from the lake!
He walked around sniffing and licking where I had sprayed the attractant spray and then went to the bait...
(http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p443/BEH160/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0104.jpg) (http://s347.photobucket.com/user/BEH160/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0104.jpg.html)

All told he was around for 45 min.....
Now Brian had told me of two different size class of bears in here and although I was pretty confident that this was the bigger of the two sizes I knew it was early in the day and wanted to make sure, I let him walk........
He meandered off and bedded down about 45 yards up hill to my right, I felt confident that as early as it was that he would be back to the bait before dark if I wanted to take him :scared:
My heart went into over drive when I realized my mistake, this wasn't the initial bear, this one was at least twice the size!!!!!!!
-
Still in the brush I couldn't get a clear look at him until he walked around a tree and came into the open and sunlight at about 15 yards out in front of me........
As the bear walked from the shadows into the sunlight it shrunk him back to the bear that I knew :saywhat: but my determination did not falter, this bear was in trouble :goldtooth:
I was still seated but had already swiveled in the stand to get my left side pointed in his direction. Upon seeing the shot that I desired I drew, touched anchor and the arrow was on its way!!!!
The opening in the top right of the pic is were he was at, just to the right of the clump of big trees....
You can see my yellow fletch if you look close but its a little bloody so its not as bright as it ounce was :goldtooth:
(http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p443/BEH160/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0108.jpg) (http://s347.photobucket.com/user/BEH160/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0108.jpg.html)
-
At the shot he growls then takes off back to my right growling about every other step and then I hear a crash with several death moans intermixed....
I was elated and started packing up my stuff.
It was 7:43 and I knew that there were some guys at camp just waiting to help track a bear
I got down to check my arrow and for blood, I wasn't disappointed.....

An hour later Matty, John and I were headed back across the lake to find my bear....
It didn't take us long and as I was trying to find my way to where I thought he fell Matt said " Hes right in front of you " sure enough, he was right in front of me, he hadn't gone as far as I thought.
Maybe 35 or 40 yards from the shot.....
John had baited this sit in the a.m. and on the boat ride across the lake I learned that I had received the Platinum Baiting Package at no extra charge....
It included extra Attractant Spray, a big bucket of Sweets and full service drag out crew

Know it was time to relax......
We had about 45 min before Ginger/Gary would be done hunting so we just hung out on the lake waiting for dark so we could pick him up....
We seen Loons, a doe swimming across the lake going from island to island and then to shore.....
It was a beautiful evening shared with a couple of great guys!
Captain Matty, Glad you were a part of the Platinum Package and as Jim Craig said on The Man From Snowy River " A man can be hard to find in the moutains, Your welcome at my fire anytime "

Congrats to everyone on a great hunt. Tom and crew always put on a great hunt. Great bears, stories and good times!
-
Nice Ben! Thanks for including me in your story. It was a treat to be there with you for sure. Congrats again and.... Likewise, any time..
-
Congrats Ben. It was great meeting you in the store!
-
Did anyone score on the Glove stand site ?????
-
Congrats Ben, Nice bear!! Enjoyed the story also.
-
Great story and congrats Ben. Your persistence paid off.
-
RON W. The Glove stand was quiet !!!
-
Thanks Fellas!
Ron,
I helped bait the Glove three times, it was getting hit but the cam only showed one small bear, and the Masquitoes were just awful there!!! Easily three times as bad as any other stand I was at!!!!
Not sure it ever got sat....
It's awaiting your return :goldtooth:
-
Great story! Congrats!
-
Great story and pics Ben :clapper:
-
Maybe next year I will make the trip back north. I better start to practice.........
-
Ron, I think the Glove was hunted only once during week one. The first day we baited that was the only stand that had bait left after a whole week.
-
The Powerline Bait was quiet as well !!!
-
I can't thank all of the great people enough that made Bear Quest 10.2 as great as it was.
The endless memories that I had at Bear Quest will last a life time for me. Great group of people in a fantastic place doing what we all love to do (Hunting with Traditional Equipment), I don't think it can get any better than that.
Thank you again to Tom and his fantastic crew for all of the hard work that they put into this event. And to each and everyone of the guys that I had the privilege to share Bear Quest 10 (2016) with.
Thank You
-
Tim, glad you posted! It was privilege to meet you and spend the week together at Bear Quest! :campfire: I'm thankful I was able to be a part of your recovery. So happy for you, well done.... :clapper:
-
Kaz,
Thank you for all of your help and for everything that you did to make Bear Quest the great experience that it was. I hope that we can share hunts together in the future.
Your friend , Tim Nuss

Hey Buddy! PLEASE tell us the story of your Northwoods conquest, Uncle Tim!
If I had to guess, I'd venture to say you smuggled a special can of Spam through customs, and used it as your secret-weapon bait to lure in the bruin of your dreams.
Do I win???
Congrats on your bear!
Daryl

Yes, Congrats Tim and very well deserved.
I was just looking back through some additional pics I took during the week. I can't help but think of Popeye and Brutus when I look at this one of BowDoc and Gary.

Hey Ben,
Thanks for including me in your posts. It really was an honor to be a part of your hunt. Meeting you and everyone else in camp was such a great experience.
Want to thank Tom for all his hard work that made such a great hunt possible and Bowdoc for just being bowdoc. Also, I would never have had the opportunity to experience such a great time if Gary Hall of D&M Custom Arrows hadn't called me and asked if I was interested in a traditional only black bear hunt in Quebec. The answer I gave is not suitable for posting.
Black bear is my favorite big game to hunt. With that in mind, I had my first traditional bowhunting big game kill hunting black bear in remote Quebec Canada at Bear Quest's 10th Anniversary. In addition to that, I met Fred Eichler and drove up to the hunt with Rod Jenkins. Who could imagine anything better?
Again, thanks to everyone. Tom, Bowdoc, Gary, Rod (it was a long ride up), Paul (the ride home was great. Thanks. You deserve every one of those 305.6lbs. Go Red Bull!!!), Sweka (with respect), Matty (your positivity is contagious), Ben (thanks again for the bear quest 10 plaque), Travis (my wife thought the Ahab thing was spot on. Really? Am I that bad sometimes?), Tim (thanks for the great talk and the CD's), Brian (still working on the new gap, thanks. You are a great shot. The bears that came in were lucky you set your standard high or they'd be on a grill right now) and Brian.
-
Hi John, so glad you posted! It was a privilege & pleasure sharing camp with you! Congrats on your bear, well done! :clapper:

Oh, and welcome to Trad-Gang :archer:
-
Thanks, Ben and Travis.
Travis, researched a little Moby Dick.
"Swerve me? The path to my fixed purpose is laid with iron rails, whereon my soul is grooved to run" Captain Ahab.
That line pretty much sums up my approach to everything in life and especially hunting/archery. You're a wise man, Travis.
It's great to be a new member of Trad Gang. Thanks again for the great week.
All the best, Jon.
-
Jon,
Glad to see you joined on Trad-gang and THANKS for the note you sent.
-
Hey Jon!
Welcome aboard! You'll love it here! :wavey: :wavey:

Jon's arsenal of knives sure came in handy in the bear processing!!!
Now where the heck is Paul and the story of the big bear? I don't want to have to tell a 3rd person's version of it.

I hope everyone will take the time to wish "Tom Phillips" A Very Happy Birthday. Toms birthday is on 07/06/2016.
Happy Birthday Tom and Thanks again for all of the hard work that you put into each and every Bear Quest.

After 24hr of travel we made camp. We drew stands from a hat and before I knew it we were headed across a resivor in a little boat. First night on the stand I was messing around with my thermocell and just fidgeting around, excited to be bear hunting the first time. Right before dark a young bear circles in from behind me and sniffed the air. He never came into the bait. I assume it smelled me and I left the stand excited and ready to hear what everyone else saw. The second night was the same thing. I had no action till right before dark. But this time it was a sow and three cubs. The sow caught wind of me and the Cubs went up a tree about 20 yards from my stand. She circled me doing mock charges and letting me know she didn't want me there. By this time I could hear the boat come in to get me,but I wasn't about to get down because she was on the opposite side of me from her cubs. The light faded and I sat there thinking what should I do. I turned on my head lamp and looked to see if I could see her eyes. I keen the Cubs were still up the tree because I could hear the occasional piece of bark hitting branches as it fell from the top of the tree. Finally I heard her growl from the side that the Cubs were on I couldn't see her with head lamp so I decided to make a break for the boat. As I rode back in the boat I wondered why I wasn't more intimidated by the situation. The third night I was sitting in the stand with my rain gear waiting for the storm clouds I could see over my shoulder to come in and cool me off. I looked to the right and and saw a bear about 20 yards off where I had first seen the sow the previous night the bear seemed hesitant and didn't want to come in. He circled behind me and I realized that he was probably the bear from the first night. As I turned to see if he would pop out on the other side of me I caught a glimpse of another bear coming down a trail in front of me. The instant I saw him I knew he was a shooter. He poked his head in the barrel walked past it to check for the other bear then went in to eat. As soon as he got his head in the barrel I let one rip. I saw the nocturnal disappear into the black of his coat and he took off like a freight train, smashing everything in his path. As I sat trying to calm my nerves I could see the bright red blood on my bright white D&M custom arrows and I new the deed was done. The low guttural sound of the death moan came quickly after but I already knew. The rain began to fall and I head down to wait for the boat. I will never forget that night and sitting there watching the Lightning streak across the sky knowing I had just made my first trad kill.

Awesome! Just had a thought. I wonder if Paul fell asleep in his stand. Started snoring and this bruiser saw it as a threat. So he came in to kill Paul. But the opposite happened. Hmmm bear calls...??
-
That's a dandy! Congrats!
God Bless,
Rodd

Matty's right. Paul can definitely snore. He might even rival Gary.
Here's a few more pics of Paul's bear I took.
This is the successful tracking crew upon return. That little boat was riding pretty low in the water.

Now this is the look of a happy bear hunter.

Another hero pic.

Focusing on the D&M arrow that brought down the bruin (i.e. a little free advertising for Gary).

We made Paul haul that beast from the scale to the skinning table himself. He struggled a bit, but who wouldn't.

There's not much I need to say about this pic other than BowDoc said it was the biggest he'd ever seen.

Congratulations on a great bear! Even better is it's your first trad kill and P&Y to boot!
I like the pic of the boat with the front riding awfully low in the water...that is always a good sign.

I'm pretty sure I was awake the whole time matty because I kept knocking my arrow off my bow and having to get down and retrieve it. By the fourth time it fell I told myself I would absolutely not get down to get it so I nocked a different arrow but it was eating away at me that it was sitting there under me. I devised a plan and got out my spare tow rope and tried to lasooe it but I couldn't get it to tighten without sliding over the fletchings and off the arrow. I got the lassoe back on the arrow and was able to let the tow rope wrap around the corner of the climbing sticks this made a L shape in the rope and allowed me to tighten the rope by pulling to the side instead of up. I guess the reason for telling this story is to point out that I have no dreams that I am a great hunter I just happened to be blessed that day. I didn't put in more time than anyone else or sit stiller than anyone else or even pass up smaller bears. I just happened to have a P&Y class bear be the first one to my bait bucket. Yes it was kinda like winning the lotto but the real prize I brought home was the experience of the trip. The time spent getting to know some new people and getting to know myself better. I hope everyone had as good of a time as I did because I would trade my bear for the experience any day.
-
Paul, you indeed were blessed that day! :saywhat:
-
What one min I did not snore half as bad as Paul, Tim or Jenkins if there was a campion for snoring at Bear Camp Jenkins wins hands down.
No one what to say that because your all scared he might cut you
Great Bear Paul that was a great trip
Can't wait to see you guys at ETAR

-
Nice........

Well said, Paul.
Though, for my money, keeping your composure and making a great shot on a bear like that makes you a darn good hunter.
All the best.

Thanks Again for leaving me some Bear Meat friday when you returned my cooler.I am looking forward to seeing whatever you have Taxidermist do with the hide and also the official skull measurement after the drying period.
