Well, I finally got my arrows finished for the 2015 season in general and my September moose hunt in particular. As you have probably noticed, I like an arrow that I can see. I would rather break one as lose one! I guess because I've got so much time invested in making them. I tried several new things on this batch and have been pleased with the results so far.

The first thing that I did differently was change my shaft material. I have used ash for a decade but it is hard to find now. So I decided to buy some maple shafts from Forrester Wood Shafts. Kevin has all sorts of neat hardwoods to choose from and he makes an excellent product. The grain was tight on all of the shafts and they were very straight.
The second thing I did for the first time was try my hand at marble cresting. I haven't perfected the technique yet but the results were passable.

Of course, I did a little flame cresting on these arrows too. I don't know why more people don't do this. I think it looks really cool.

The last thing I did was change broadheads. I have used the 200 grain Ace Super Express broadheads for years but I was concerned about tip curling if I hit a moose bone. So I did some research and decided to try the 190 grain Cutthroats by Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear. They are a single-bevel head machined out of a single piece of steel so there is no weld or braze to possibly fail. They also come with a lifetime guarantee - if they bend or break they will be replaced.
These arrows finished out a little heavier than I thought they would - a whopping 812 grains! But I shot them tonight and they flew well. My first shot at 31 yards, I hit a clay bird I had hanging up. I felt pretty good about that! Now I just need to hit a moose.

Sweeeeeet! Good Luck on the hunt.

Too nice to drag around the woods! :biglaugh:
Good luck on your moose quest. I think those areas will serve you well.
-
I hope to see one of those covered in blood!
-
May I say...YOU have talent! Great job.
Hope you knock down one of those big boys.
-
Those look fantastic! Gotta love the Forrester shafts. I agree with you about flame cresting...I like a little fire to hit my arrows as I build them too. Any particular tutorial you followed to do the marbling on the crest? Gotta try that technique sometime. Good luck on the moose hunt!

Great looking arrows!

I think you mistakenly posted your wife's arrows. seriously, nice job. A little too much for me but still nice.
-
I like those. Really cool flame cresting. Also great choice in heads.
-
Moose should be lining up to get shot with thoseā¦.
-
WOW! My first reaction was more like: come on, are you kidding me? But after reading the narrative and effort put into them, I am most impressed at both the thought that went into them, the effort, and the artistry. Any moose shot with one of those should be proud to go quickly...he (or she) could have just been taken with with some old nasty plain arrow and maybe even with a mechanical head. Go in style if you gotta go.
Really nice effort

Holy Cow.......those are wild!!!

Nice. That's a LOT of helical! What did you fletch them with?
-
Nice looking arrows there Darren!
-
Dang,
I don't think I'd be able to shoot those as I'd be afraid of losing them. Give me ugly arrows for hunting .. .easier to lose.
LOL

Thanks, all. Pistolpete, I fletched those with a left helical clamp in my Bitzenberger.

Since I'll be on this hunt with Darren, I feel it's fitting to show mine. I've had these done for a while but just got the broadheads and mounted them today and had to go out and shoot them.
First the business end. I'm trying 2 broadheads. The new 190 Cutthroats and some 175 Abowyer Wapiti.

Now the pretty end. This is a 6 arrow group at 25 yards and the last couple are spread a hair cause I was getting worried about my new arrows.

This is what I worried about.

They fly great with either head and I don't think I can go wrong with whichever one comes out of my quiver.

Great looking arrows with an awesome front end. Should do the trick on a moose.
-
Nice
-
Your broadheads look like they have been subjected to some serious heat. Did they get hot while mounting them?
-
Beautiful arrows guys! When my boys get a little older, I will have the time to get into making my own woodies...but I don't really want them to grow up anytime soon.
dnovo, what are you shooting those broadheads into?
Best of luck on the moose hunt! Can't wait to read about the trip!
-
Those are some great looking arrows.
-
Big Lefty, I have a big block of styrfoam that is about 3'x3'x8' that I use for broadhead practice and testing.
-
Too pretty to get all bloodied up LOL
They look great , good luck on your moose hunt.
-
How is the flame cresting done? I have seen a flame applied to a shaft for random markings, but those are really cool.
-
Flame cresting is done with a butane torch and these three brass templates made by Jerry Shriver of Shriver Archery. You can still buy them from Kustom King ( http://www.kustomkingarchery.com/Flame-Crester/productinfo/A3300/ ) but I know Jerry is working on putting up a new website to sell them and he's also making a how-to dvd. It takes a little practice to get the hang of it but the results sure look cool.

Mike Yancey - That is funny!!

You have some artistic talent. They are beautiful!

Very nice, great looking work!
-
2bird, I'm shooting a R/D Tall Timbers longbow that pulls 55# @ 28".
Mike, that would be a MICRO bus full of hippies.
Peace out
