Title: Interesting evening
Post by: RodL on October 06, 2015, 09:15:00 PM
Yesterday I was out in an old orchard on our property making the final touches on a ground blind I started making the week before. I was breaking branches, dragging pieces of brush, etc to construct my ambush spot when I take a break and hear something coming right towards me in the high grass that surrounds the orchard, at first I think it might be a bear coming to eat some apples so I get my phone out to take a quick picture, then I see antlers above the high grass and this guy steps out 15 yards above me and stands there for a couple of minutes before wondering off. I know he had to hear me making all the noise so I'm wondering if he might had thought 2 bucks were fighting and was coming by to check things out. To bad my bow was in my truck, I thought about taking it with me but figured I wouldn't see anything making all the noise.
If you look in the middle of the picture you can see him standing there

I've had similar situation while hanging a stand. All the clinking and clanking brought in a little basket rack 8, it was awesome to see.
That's what I don't understand, because any other time if a gnat farts those deer run for the next county lol

My blind about 10 yards to the left in this picture, where this deer is standing would have been tough to get a clear shot but right behind where I was standing is 3 apple trees that are loaded with red apples and there are 4 major trails that lead to these trees and its a 15 yard shot to these trees from my blind so if I'm patient I'm sure any deer that come thru will eventually end up under those apple trees.

Sounds like a neat experience!

I love it when cool, unexpected things happen in the woods.

Nice! I graduated from Frostburg back in 2001! Doesn't seem so long ago until I start doing the math!! There's some great land to hunt around there! Good luck!

I once had a similar experience with a pair of does. I had been working on that blind for a good bit and had worked up quite a sweat. Decided to take a break and have a snack (peanut butter crackers and a Coke as I recall, but it was 28 years ago). They walked up within 12-15 yards and stared in my general direction for a while before losing interest and moving off. I've read more than once since that time that sometimes they just want to know what all the racket is in the "back room" and will come to investigate.
