Title: Best haversack for my needs?
Post by: Gdpolk on November 07, 2015, 09:13:00 PM
I'm looking for a very nice, high quality haversack to hold the following stuff.  Cost isn't going to be a huge concern, but I do want a quality product which may well be a military surplus item or something from a high end vendor like Bison Gear.

Wants:
Needs to hold:
I'd prefer something that is compartmentalized a bit so I can be well organized over a design that's simply like a cloth bucket on a strap to pile it all in, but I don't necessarily need everything to have a place.  It's just easier in the dark to find things like my flashlight if it's kept secure in a small pocket on the inside.

I have a large one from them.  It's about the right size and I like it for shotgun hunting for squirrel right around the house/car but I'd like something of similar size (maybe a tiny bit bigger) that's a little more compartmentalized for bowhunting and scouting.

I really like this one from Bison Gear.  It is quiet wool and will hold everything you named.

I've been looking at them, Duluth, and a Swedish gas mask bag. I've also thought about having something custom made with features of all that I like.

I have a Swedish mil. surplus bag that meets your specs except it is a neutral gray.  Waterproof (rain, anyway), quiet, adjustable.

It's on my left hip in this image.

Cheaper Than Dirt has various old mil surp bags that come and go.  The market's drying up and modern "clones" are popping up that are nowhere hear as well made.

If I lost this one I'd likely go with the Asbell bag.

I will have my new bison gear haversack hopefully in a couple weeks. Have heard nothing but great things about them.

I just started using a Finnish Gas Mask Bag. Great piece of gear. It has a row of sewn in compartments for organizing smaller gear, snap closers, shoulder strap and waste strap. It has a large capacity for a small bag. I purchased mine from Keep Shooting Army Surplus. I think I paid $12 with shipping. It was in like new condition. It comes in a couple colors OD Green and. Brown.

These look promising as well in terms of size and organization.

I got one that I like as a shell bag for shotgun hunting squirrel.  It's really great.  I'd just like to add another that's a bit more compartmentalized for better organization for deer hunting so I can quickly and easily grab exactly what I'm wanting without much movement.

Here's a build along that let's you make your haversack any way you want.

Thanks.  I've considered this route as well.  In all honesty I may wind up buying several to try out then seeing about having one made custom for me.  I don't know.  I'm really liking the looks of several.  I've also considered having more than one and keeping a few grab and go kits ready for different uses excluding snacks, water, and a knife: IE hiking bag, scouting bag, small game bag, and deer bag.
