Trad Gang

This year I gave up the training wheels and was determined to hunt with trad gear. I've had many close encounters and just couldn't close the deal. Deer were too close and I couldn't draw, they were too far etc... Although it is frustrating at times, I love the simplicity of the bow, the challenge and the discipline that is required. Friday, November 6 found me hunting in Chautauqua County, NY at my friend Mooch's place. He set me up in a pinch point inside of an old overgrown apple orchard. It was 76 degrees and I didn't expect much deer movement that afternoon. As I was day dreaming in my stand, I hear a commotion to my right. It's a deer... and he has some headgear! I start to put tension on the string as he trots towards my first shooting lane. I grunt to make him stop. He stops... but short of the lane with his vitals covered by branches. He starts trotting again, I grunt as he enters my shooting lane, he stops but I don't have a clear shot. Now I start to get excited. I have one more shooting lane to loose an arrow before he's gone from my life forever. He starts walking quickly towards my last opening. I grunt but he won't stop! I grunt as loud as I can and he finally stops, I come to full draw, pick a spot and let the arrow fly. I hear the thump and he runs off with his tail tucked. This is when the adrenaline starts to shoot through my body. I text Mooch that I hit one and we meet back at his house. Mooch found him first and I think he was just as happy as I. My first deer, a buck with 11 points. I'm still walking on sunshine and can't wipe the smile from my face. Thank you for reading. Be well, hunt safe and shoot straight. I have an Allegheny Mountain made by Bill Kerner in his 50th year of making bows. This was one of his last bows made before he sold the company to Jeff Strauss. She's 52# @ 30", Easton carbon arrows tipped with 125 grain Wensel Woodsman broadheads.
