Centaur carbon foam shooters
« on: December 21, 2015, 09:46:00 PM »
I will be having a new Centaur built late spring/early summer next year.  I currently have a triple carbon and I've loved it.  I talked to Jim a bit today about the possibility of adding the carbon foam this time around.  Since I won't be able to get my hands on one prior to having one built I'd like to get feedback from others on here.

From my review of previous posts there seems to be a few themes about carbon foam.

1. some feel it's a high pitch but not necessarily louder (what I'm most interested in is whether that's just a difference to adjust to or something that people feel animals react more strongly to).  I find my current triple carbon to be very quiet.  I also hear some say it's about combining the foam with carbon back and belly, this will have a carbon back/belly/xtl lams.

2. The foam tends to be more consistent in various temps.

3. Supposedly a very smooth draw. (I will be ordering a 55@29 so there should be little to no stacking with my draw and this design).

4. Some feel it had a whip action to the feel on release.

5. Finally, and most important to this post, most say it's more about the bowyer, their design, and their construction rather than the material itself.  So I'm interested in general feedback but specifically interested to hear from folks that have Centaurs with foam (even more so if they can compare to the usual triple carbon).

Thanks in advance.

I suspect thier are not too many carbon foam Centaurs around currently?I could be wrong.I would mostly talk to Jim and get his feedback.

I have had a few carbon foam limbed bows.

I really liked the Morrison double carbon foam cored limbs a lot!I liked them more than the bamboo and glass.I had had quite a few of both from Morrison in both longbow and recurve. They were quiet, smooth and fast. They did did not feel spongy like a few I have tried. They dampened out quick when the limbs recovered

I have had another makers bow who,s carbon foam limbs were not as good as his bamboo glass limbs.

The foam limbs felt spongy and did not feel crisp. They were slower and less stable.

It shooting qualities coiuld very well depend on the bows design and the layup.

I have had some ILF limbs with carbon foam that shot nice and sweet. No problems at all.

Foam is more consistant in varying temps.

I would think his triple carbon limb with foam would be very stable and crisp with all that carbon and the XTL lamination. If they dampen out quick they should be very quiet.I would think torsional stability would be good with the narrow deep cored limb and 3 lams of carbon.

I sure would like to try a set out   :)

I'm worried there aren't many Centaur with carbon foam out there either.  I guess we'll find out:)

Did you feel they were any louder?  Change in tone but not volume?

No I did not feel they were louder and I did not think they had a high pitched tone like some carbon limbed bows with wood cores. The Morrisons I had had more of a base tone.I think a base tone is less spooky, less alarming.

I don't know what the deer think. But to me a high pitch is more attention getting and alarming.

Car alarms, sirens, clock alarms and alarm calls by many animals are higher pitch mostly

There do seem to be consistent reports about the Morrisons not having the same issues that others have noticed with other bows.  It speaks to the argument about the bowyer and design rather than the material.  It could also speak to the material (quality and consistency) the specific bowyer is using as well I guess.

I would talk to Jim at length about his thoughts/experiences with foam in his design. He'll definitely have the best and most accurate info.

Me personally, Unless you are in real extreme environments I don't feel foam is any real advantage over bamboo or other proven limb core

Just my 2 cents

I appreciate the two cents, I'm looking for as many opinions as possible.  I'm in Texas so it's usually hot or really hot:)

I started the conversation with Jim yesterday.  I will definitely be leaning on what his advice is but I appreciate getting different opinions.  Thanks again.

Huh...i didn't even know that there are foam cores for Centaurs...Is that what the XLT is?  I am guessing not as you own a triple already.

It is not on the order form or web pages  http://www.centaurarchery.com/bow_order_form.htm  but who knows maybe they are out of date.

What I do know is Jim knows his stuff...

Looking forward to learning more

It's not on the webpage but he has pics of the ones he's done and I talked with him a bit about it.  I'm guessing there are very few of them out there at this point.
