Got my first longbow
« on: January 02, 2016, 03:01:00 AM »
It is a Brackenbury "old timer" made by Gorden Porter I have been told mid 90's.  66# (but feels a bit lighter than that) @29.  Two piece take down.  Woods are bacote and osage.  I like it a lot so far have only got to shoot about 40 arrows through it.  Quieter than my recurve by far but not whisper quiet.  Seems to propel my arrows at a similar velocity to my 60# Samick sage that it is replacing.  I have made a lot of changes to my shooting lately as this bow is left handed.  I am making the switch as left eye is dominant though I am right handed.  I don't feel any hand shock but this is my first longbow as I mentioned.

Duncsquatch,I made the switch from right handed shooting to left many years ago.  It was without doubt the best move I ever made for my bow shooting.  I too am right handed but left eye dominate.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

You ought to be able to get that bow whisper quiet...the brace height actually looks a bit on the high side of an American Style longbow...most bows tend to get quieter with a longer brace height but not all...I finally bought my first Hill style longbow...it is a dual shelf, something you might want to consider since you are going to be able to shoot both ways as I do

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

On further inspection it appears I may have jumped the gun saying that is an American Style Longbow...looks to me like a mild d/r bow...one trick my friend and I use on those sometimes to quiet them down is setting the nocking point a bit higher than normal

Thanks guys, after having shot this bow for a couple of days, it is much quieter as my left handed release has improved.  I have only shot left handed on about 3 outings so far.  Today I went out and shot at some stumps in the freezing cold weather it was fun.  i also fixed some alignment issues and shot rather well today. I have a video but am having trouble posting it so you can see/hear the bow in action.

Actually I have been shooting a 73 bear kodiak magnum at 60 lbs lefty for a bit. This bow feels easier to shoot than the bear due to no stacking and a smoother draw.  I also have a 50 lb ambidextrous fiberglass recurve I can shoot lefty. So I have been building up to it.
