FWIW...I did some investigating into hog hunting in that area at that WMA too, because I had been going to an outfitted hunt held near there for about 6 years in a row, back around 2002-2008., and wanted to try it on my own.
I contacted the biologist from FWC who worked the area, and suggest you do the same. He was very helpful.
At the time, he steered me to a different WMA near La Belle where he had previously worked, because he said it had a lot more hogs.
That was then...could be, and probably is, different now.
I found that WMA overrun with firearms hunters on the very few weekends that they had it open. I had to laugh (bitterly) because the FWC rep told me one of the hunters had shot a black Angus calf and reported it as the largest hog he had ever seen.
So,my advice isn't real recent...but the biologist will know.
The Appalachicola WMA is a big place and it is beautiful.
I was there in Feb.
I do hunt hogs in July but further South, and on private land. It's warm for sure, but we always get a nice ocean breeze which you probably will not have in the APP WMA area.
If you try and get frustrated, call me.
