New to me Bill Stewart recurve. Tuning help?
« on: January 27, 2016, 04:59:00 PM »
Just got this baby! Love it so far, draw is really smooth and feels great, and I love the grip as well. 50# at 28" 60" length. really love the "double cam" wiggle in the limbs and the draw does feel really nice.  heres some pics

I am shooting it pretty well but there is still some tuning to be done for sure. I think I need a stiffer arrow.

I started with a gold tip 5575 and 200 grain point cut to 29" because that was shooting well out of my 55# longbow. However when I started bareshafting them I could see they were definitely too weak. nock was way left and arrow was hitting low and right.

These are the only shafts I have and I can't cut them any shorter because I draw about 28.5" so all I can do is experiment with point weight. I went all the way down to a 125 grain tip and it finally seemed a little too stiff, hitting to the left. Now I have 145 grain tips on and they seem to bare shaft pretty good, not great but definitely the best of all my experiments. But I think they are about right, however my arrow weight is pretty low like this, I think around 400. SO, I am thinking I should order some 7595 because I would like to be shooting that with a 200 grain point and hopefully a little longer as well because these 29" are barely long enough. Does that sound like a good idea and do you think a slightly longer 7595 with a heaver point would be a similar spine to a 29" 5575 with 145g point?

One other tuning problem; My bare shafts seem to hit nock high no matter what. I started out high, was clearly too high arrows were diving into the dirt, moved it down bit by bit until I was clearly too low, they started bouncing back up off the shelf. So went back up but no matter where I go they are always hitting a little bit nock high, so I just got it the best I could and settled for that. Then after shooting for a while I noticed the padding on my shelf was torn up, You can see in the last picture. So maybe my feathers are hitting it or something? I think I should try a flatter smoother shelf like calf hair what do you think?

And last question, I cant the bow a fair bit, so when I am bare shaft tuning should account for that in my groups by rotating the picture, or is it about the same vertical or canted?

Thanks! hope to get it tuned well and really hoping this bow is going to take my shooting to the next level. I've been shooting for years and my consistency is still just not there. So far I am shooting this bow quite well though with the fletched shafts, getting some great groups and hoping with a little more adjustment I will be better than ever.
I'd rather challenge myself and go home empty handed

Just finished shooting some more arrows and I wanted to add one more thing on the note of canting the bow. If I am canting it to the right could a high nock be a result of weak spine or at least combination weak spine and nock point?
