Good thread! Never used one but plan on getting Chads this yr. I don't have a stabilizer mount on my tip and Chads should fit it nicely.

Never have used one my thought on broken string is that at least you would have a decent start to the track?? I mean I have had deer seem to not bleed for the first bit of a trail and then open up on down the trail. I am hoping that of even string is broken maybe then I can get a good lead to start. Well hopefully string doesn't break! :-)

Bisch, no way of knowing what happened ( oblique shots) but another thing that we need to watch for is if using wide heads, they will, if, hit right, not go thru point first but rather skate along a surface until it cuts, no matter how sharp it is.

Wide heads and severe angles mean it might not be touching with the very point, but rather on one of the sides ( deer / pig / blind ).  

I believe that is why we sometimes see huge gashes, especially using Simmons heads.   That is great if it goes in finally and kills the critter, but not so great if it just lays them open to die sometime later.

It was not wide heads for me. That happened to me before I started shooting the wider heads. What makes me think it was the feather quill catching is that the tear was long and ragged (almost like a tear), not smooth like it had been cut by a blade.
