Another aluminum suggestions thread...
« on: February 10, 2016, 12:34:00 AM »
I use a 45lb 2014 Bear Montana. I've always used carbons, and know little to nothing about aluminums... From what I gathered I should go with a 1916 arrow, but I know that is dependent on a few factors, so I will tell you what I can.

1. As I said it's 45lb@28", and I have a 28" draw length...

2. The factory 14 strand D97 string has been replaced with a BCY-X string from 60XCustom.

3. The Montana comes with a bit of leather over the shelf and acting as a strike plate, that is between 1/16 to 1/8" thick. I removed that bit and shoot off a bare shelf.

4. I'm left handed, although I don't see that making a difference.

I'm not sure what else might be necessary... I was thinking 1916's with 125gr tips should get me there, or very close. Thoughts?

Also, what would be a good brand for a poor archer to get?

1916 might work if left a touch long, maybe a 1816 too.

I shoot 2016's at the same weight as you. I found 1916's weak.  I am using 125 head with standard insert arrows 28.5" long.  Bow is schafer recurve

I would say try 2016 arrows cut to 29 inches with a 125 grain point, that should get you close.
Hunting is the fun part, once you kill something the work begins

I'm wondering why you removed the covering on the shelf. I sure would rather have some mild wear on a piece of leather/moleskin/velcro/whatever, than on the finish of the bow. Also, doesn't that hard surface cause some arrow bounce?

If it were me, and if i was to be hunting deer with the set up at some point....id try to go with the 2016. You may possibly end up a shade long, but that will only add to the needed arrow weight for hunting, and get the head a bit farther from your hand. You are right on a line, and depending on your bow and its set up,  even might need some tweeking in end weight. If the 2016 ends up a bit stiff for the length, weaken it out with 145 gr heads.

2016 Easton Tribute @ $2.92 a shaft.
Start with a 30.5" arrow BOP and cut down by 1/4" increments for fine tuning. Try to have 125 grain and 145 grain field points on hand.
You should land right in the 480-520 grain area for total arrow weight.
And I would put the leather back on to the shelf in order to have it silent when you want to hunt. Aluminums are hollow tubes and can make noise when banged against something which is not cushioned.
