Part of the question was about how things were in the 60s and 70s. I started shooting a modern hunting recurve in 1967 and by 1969 had shot wood, aluminum and Microflight shafts.
We didn't know much beyond spine charts for wood, fiberglass and aluminum. You picked an arrow based on a spine chart, put a 125 grain field point or Bear Razorhead on it and tested it out. Our arrows flew pretty good too.
Grains per pound, grains per inch, FOC, arrow weight, fletch size never entered the conversation or thoughts.
We usually had friends who shot bows or an archery club so you'd shoot other people's arrows and compare notes. That was in effect our internet.
