Broadhead Question
« on: March 04, 2016, 08:59:00 AM »
I am actually going to get to do some hinting soon and I have a question about the broadhead I should use. I have heard time after time of people using a flat head. My question is this, would I be making a mistake if I use a 3 blade (woodsman)? I have more confidence in a three blade but I haven't ever truly hunted hogs before. Thanks for any help you can give.

Ryan,

Just my OPINION, but I think you'll be fine with whatever as long as you hit it where you're supposed to.  The "wrong" broadhead in the right place will do the trick.  The "right" broadhead in the wrong place will NOT do the trick.

Shoot what you're confident in and put it in the right place.

If you're concerned with penetration, I just spoke with a friend about a hog he killed this past week and he got very "poor penetration" due to the hog turning on release and stuck him in his shoulder.  He got about 8" of penetration, but found his hog around 60 yards away.  BTW, that 8" was enough to get a lung and into the heart.

What is your set up?  Can't give a qualified answer without knowing set up?

I will be using either a RER that is 62#@28 or a Black widow that is 58#@28. Not sure what all I will need to do to the arrow to get the weight right but I will be using the Easton N-fused FMJ arrow.

I personally don't see a problem with a 3 blade at all.

If you're more confident with a certain setup then it's what you should be using.

I really don't have a whole of data to back up my confidence. I feel that 3 blades will leave a hole that is harder to close, which in my Biology teacher brain, means better blood trails. I also know that there has been a lot of game taken with a flat broadhead. There used to be a thread on here that had a lot of broadhead holes but I can find it now. Does anyone know the name of the thread?

From what I know about your preferences, I think you will be shooting a 55# or higher bow.  That's plenty of weight to push a 3 blade Woodsman into the goodies, if it's properly sharpened.  I would be leery about using a 3 blade Woodsman with a 45# bow.
