58" thunderstick brace height?
« on: March 07, 2016, 10:31:00 PM »
Now that Jim Reynolds is kinda closing up shop and is harder to reach I figured I'd ask here. I have my 58" thunderstick mag brace set at 6 3/4.  Bow is 50@27 and I'm probably drawing a tad less than that...maybe 26 3/4. It seems to shoot good at this brace with 29" gold tip trad .500s with 225 up front.  I am just wondering if there is an "optimal" brace height for this bow. It seems louder around 7 1/4 which I assumed would be on the high end of the spectrum.

Maybe I should quit worrying but I've been bare shafting like a lunatic and just trying to make it perfect!

Mine shoots well at 7-1/2".  I'm shooting about 53#s @ 26".

That's with a 8 strand SBD string.
62" Super D, 47#s @ 25-1/2"
58" TS Mag, 53#s @ 26"
56" Bighorn, 46#s @ 26.5"

My Mag's a 58", 45@28", and I draw right around there. Mine seems to like 7 & 3/8", give or take a twist or two. Shooting wood arrows, 45/50 or 50/55's, total weight around 1o.5 to 11 GPP.

I emailed Jim a while back when I got the bow, as I recall he said start around 7", and just go from there.

FWIW, I have also been finding type and placement of silencers to really affect how quiet the bow is.

I've set them 18'" on center from top limb tip, 17 1/2" oc from limb tip to center, bottom limb. for 8 strand D-97, wool silencers. VERY quiet right now, 3 fingers split.

Ive got several Of Jims bows, depending on the arrow Im shooting they seem to like anywhere from 6-3/8 on up to 7-1/4". Mine are all 60 and 62". My son has a 56" mag, and its right in that same ballpark. I find if I get too low with the brace, I either start catching my wrist with the string, or I get a little bit of vibration. JIms bows are shock-free when tuned, so I just start at 6.5" and bump up 2 twists at a time. You'll know when you find that sweet spot, dead in the hand and very quiet.
...stood alone on a montaintop, starin out at a great divide, I could go east, I could go West, it was all up to me to decide, just then I saw a young hawk flyin and my soul began to rise......
