58" Kodiak hunter
« on: March 19, 2016, 01:19:00 PM »
I had been patiently awaiting the arrival of a 58" Bear from my uncle. I just assumed it was going to be a Grizzly. I was shocked when I opened the box and inside was a 58" Kodiak Hunter. I didn't even know they made a 58", thought they were all 60".
I installed the string he provided after taking all but took a few twists out of the string.(Figured I would begin tuning at low brace and twist my way up). With string lnstalled the bow braced at 8 3/4". I know this is a pretty typical bh for the grizzly, but is this typical for the 58" k hunter as well?? Just wondering if I should invest in a little longer string to start tuning with??

I have a 67' just like that. I brace it so that I just see the string grooves when strung. Great bows, just a bit higher wrist than I like. Mine is almost silent with just wool puffs. I hope you enjoy it!!!!!!

I have a 67 bear kodiak Hunter that was given to me from my grandfather. I believe they only made them 58 inches for one year, that being 1967. I'm trying to harvest something with it. I really enjoy shooting my kodiak Hunter! Enjoy the bow!

At 8 3/4 bh the string grooves are not quiet visible. So I guess I'll start there and twist up a little at a time and hopefully find the sweet spot.
Its been 20+ years since I shot a bow with a high wrist like this. That was my dads 48" super mag. Hopefully the weather is nicer tomorrow so I can launch some arrows out of her. Rained/snowed all day today, not the conditions I want for the first test run.

I had a Kodiak Hunter as a teen. A friend had one for sale and I didn't care for the high wrist at all now. Funny how we change over time.

Finally had enough spare time today to work on tuning the Kodiak.
I started at about 8-3/4" and started twisting up.
At  9-1/8" the string started out of the lower groove and got a little quieter. Finally at 9-1/4" the string started out of the upper groove and quieted down some more.
By this time the string was twisted up enough to take nearly an inch out.
I can't find a whole lot of info on these 58" kodiaks, other than they were only made one year. BH seems a little high, but I've seen it this high before on some Grizzlies. What are your thoughts? Ron do you know what your bh ended up being?
Is it common for the older Bears to take a string 4-1/2 to 5" less than amo?

AS the string stretches it will shorten as you twist it up. Mine is close to 9"......

Thanks Ron.
Guess my bh isn't that much higher. I'll have to get a little shorter string. It was nearly twisted up on itself to get to that bh.

Finally getting myself and the Kodiak in tune together. Spent about two weeks getting arrows tuned. Finally ended up with 2213s @ 29 1/4 with standard inserts and 175gr tips.
Then there was an additional week or two getting myself in tune with the bow. It had been about 15 yrs since I shot a high wrist bow, so it took a little adjusting to get comfortable.
The past couple days I've been trying to bring it all together and group some arrows. I think I'm finally starting to get there.

I'd like to thank EVERYONE for their help and advice in my endeavor. Whether it was answers to direct questions or just advice found in the many pages of trad gang.  Whether it was bh, string making(this bow is sporting my first twist job), arrow tuning, grip, form, release.....you name it.
MANY THANKS to MANY GREAT GUYS!!!!

Hey that's some good shooting there.
Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow.
