Broadhead Help
« on: April 08, 2016, 04:12:00 PM »
Ok, so it's time to pull the trigger on some broadheads.  No, I'm not asking the crazy question, "which head do you use?" because I know that has been discussed a thousand times on here one way or another.

Instead, I have narrowed it down to two that I believe that may work best in my situation:

Kodiak (Grizzly) Single Bevel 200 gr
Meathead (Tuffhead) Single Bevel 190 gr

Any experience? Problems? Is it worth paying twice the $$ for the Kodiaks to get the Meatheads?

I would be willing to look at other suggestions but I know that I want a 2 blade Single Bevel with as close to a 3:1 ration as possible.  It needs to be about 225 gr with the ability to screw into a carbon arrow (such as my ~200 gr selections that I will use with a broadhead adapter).

Either of those will work fine.  Might also take a look at Abowyer Brown Bears.  Very nice head, a bit pricier.

Those 2 heads are exactly my pick too, but in different weight set ups. I been using Grizzlys as of late..they are great too.

Honestly, either head you have chosen,  you will love. Id personally go for the cheaper kodiak, but I think the tuffhead is a little better quality. Just pick and you will like em... hows your hand at sharpening?....  You are going to need that.

I thought about cutthroats, love everything about them except that they are shorter than I would like to use.

Abowyer Brown Bears look solid, but same issue, plus they are a little $$ for me.

I appreciate it so far guys!  Keep it coming if you have something to add

Just an opinion here but both heads are solid. I would use a steel adapter. They don't come light enough for your needs but are a better option (Personal opinion). I have had the aluminum break. If you used a lighter grizzly you could use the steel adapters and get close to 225.

If you are using the 25 grain titanium adapters I don't know anything about those. Good luck and get em bloody.

My question would be what are you going to hunt? Moose or giant hogs, maybe go for the tuffhead. Anything else and you should be good to go with the grizzlies. The only problem I've had with the grizzlies has been the need to straighten some of them before mounting and a touch of tip curling when confronting larger bone mass.

Both are proven heads.  Of the two, I've settled on the Kodiaks.  The Meatheads/Tuffheads are great heads, but I want something wider. The Kodiaks have performed very well for me.

You can't go wrong with either head, the Grizzlies may take a little more to get hunting sharp, and the Tuffheads may be a slight bit stronger, but both will serve you well-

Thanks for all of the replies, it's always good to get some opinion from experience.

These are planned for an elk hunt this fall, just trying to find what I want so I have time to get comfortable with them.

I have used a lot of great heads over the last 4 or 5 decades. But, I think I found my "holy grail"---250 Cutthroats. Enjoy the journey!
