Gold Tip Velocity Carbon Shafts - QUESTION
« on: April 23, 2016, 10:50:00 AM »
I am thinking of ordering some Gold Tip Velocity carbon shafts. They look like the ratio of stiffness to GPI weight is favorable for making high FOC arrows.

Could anyone with experience with these shafts offer some information?

1. Will these shafts accept standard 5/16" arrow components like glue-in-glue-on brass broad head inserts and glue-in-glue-on nock adapters?

2. Will any of the 3-Rivers carbon collars fit on these shafts? And if so, do you know which ones would fit the Velocity 400 size shafts?

I am looking to make an arrow with a 20% to 25% or more FOC at 500 to 550 grains or so in the 400 size with an overall length of over 29.5"-- So far, my calculations indicate that the Velocity 400 shafts would work if standard 5/16 shaft components fit these shafts..

Since I have to move down in draw weight due to shoulder arthritis, I think that high FOC arrows might help mitigate the effects of the lowered draw weight a bit. I am also moving toward using the most souped-up stick bow I can afford to wring every bit of power out of the bow.

I would appreciate any help or information that anyone can offer.

Well.....I did some on-line research and I think I found some answers. Still, any insights on these shafts that anyone could offer will be appreciated.

Yes, same inside diameter as all other .246 gold tips. They are the same as the ultra lights with a different label...I have first hand knowledge of this.

Thanks, Jim. I kind of thought that was the case. The summer is the time that I experiment with arrow/broadhead combinations, so I'll get going on this soon.

I also use the GT Ultralights, now Velocitys.  Very good arrows for creating high FOC.

Also, Big Jim sells ArraFoot footings for Velocitys, that I highly recommend. Size #1 would fit your Velocity 400s prfectly. They rock!

I made my 30.5" velocity 400s the. collars 1" from I believe 2117 aluminum. I used standard inserts and the bhoning nocks. 300gr points. 3x 4" feathers with a 5inch wrap. I ended up with 585gr total weight with a 27.7% foc. Launched from a McBroom forward handle longbow, 55lb at 28" with a 180fps.

Have you decided on which souped up LB? You know every bowyer will claim his is the fastest, hits the hardest, and all those other trad bow adjectives.

Thanks for the insights. I'll order some shafts and get the experimenting started.

I am going to build these arrows to have about 275-300 gr up front, and use my own custom-cut 4" feathers and custom wraps on the tail end. By my initial, pre-tune calculations indicate that the arrows will be between 520 and 550 grains and about 24% FOC. Of course, these figures are subject to the effects of tuning and might change a bit.

As far as this season's souped-up bow is concerned. I have picked up a used Centaur Chimera that is 43# at my 29" draw. I am very impressed with its smoothness, stability, and speed. It seems to have a good balance of attributes. I have another Centaur on order, a Triple Carbon Elite, that will be a bit more souped up -- and the Chimera will suffice until my slot in the build wait list comes up.

The evidence on FOC that is available now is very convincing. I have developed an arrow for the Chimera that is 18% FOC and 510 gr, and it performs well. This experiment is to see if i can develop something better.

The souped up bows that I have picked up on the used bow market and that have impressed me as good performers while still being stable are the ACS-CX and the Centaur in the R/D bow category; and the Rose Oak in the recurve category (I like the Rose Oak limbs on a Bear TD riser). I have chosen the Centaur to start with because I really like the grip and the stability of that bow, but the others are also first-rate bows that could easily accommodate my need to hunt with a reduced draw weight to preserve my arthritic shoulder joints for as many more years of hunting as possible. I am now 67 and I hope that this move will make it possible for me to bow hunt for another 15 years or more.

Thanks again for the help and information. I will start a new thread post on the new arrows after I have worked out the kinks in the design and development.

I have been using the velocity 300's with my 60# blacktail for maybe four years and am very happy with them. I also used the 100 g brass inserts with 200gr heads. I forget the size of the 3R collars I used with them but just followed their chart. I'd recommend getting the inserts that you can screw in extra weight from the back so that you can get judos to fly the same as heavier heads; that teamed with the the collars has proven to be a pretty bomb-proof stumping arrow.
