Removing adhesive from antlers ?
« on: June 14, 2016, 11:37:00 AM »
A gentleman that I work with found out that I make things with deer antlers and gave me some of his non trophy racks .
My question is , a few of them have the tags stuck directly to the antler and when I peel it off , there is a sticky residue left .
I've worked with antler for many years but I have never had to remove something like this before .
I don't want to stain or change the color of the antler .
Anyone have any suggestions for what to try ?
Buffing is not working , just rolls up and burns .
I'm afraid mineral spirits will soak in with the adhesive .
Hopefully one of you have had this problem and know a way to get it off .
Thanks for your help .

Haven't had the same issue, but maybe try a little bit of white vinegar mixed with some warm water. Dip a part of paper towel into mixture and then dab a little onto area with adhesive. Let sit for a few seconds then try wiping wet area with dry part of paper towel.

Start with low ratio of vinegar to water, small amounts of mixture on adhesive, short soak time and light pressure. Increase each as needed until either adhesive removed or you notice a color change.

I wouldn't think the vinegar would remove any color except that of dirt or plant material in pores of antlers.

I have used vinegar/water mixture removing wallpaper many times using a spray bottle. It soaks through the wallpaper and loosens the adhesive backing. I have never noticed any discoloration of wall behind paper. Good luck.

I thought about goo gone .
One good thing , I have a spike that has very little character to it , and I think that one will be the experiment .
Still I didn't want to spoil that one either because it would still make nice buttons .
I was thinking dry ice , might get it to scrape off when frozen .

I use Acetone. It evaporates quickly. Use a test area
