Hope, Faith, and.....?
« on: June 23, 2016, 03:10:00 PM »
Like many ,I hope it comes together for a bowyer to craft a pair of Hope and Faith bows for the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital Fundraiser for 2017.This is a pretty unique Trad Gang tradition that not only raises money for the kids who need special care but it also generates some great stories and photos of hunting adventures with bows that carry a bit of magic with them on their journeys, all to the better of our sport.

I don't discount the commitment and generosity that is involved in a bowyer creating and donate two newly custom-made bows. I can assure you that those who have done so in past years have pulled out all the stops in the spirit of the effort. When Hope and Faith took a year off in 2016, I had a few casual conversations with TG members  about introducing another pair of travelers for the cause, a matched set of vintage bows that had accumulated years of mojo, like an old doe who never comes near a feeder or a big old buck who spends his entire life in a few acres, never seen because he is cagey and nocturnal. This would be another way to raise some funds, make some memories and give an additional couple dozen TG archers an opportunity to hunt with a bow of legend.
This is Terry's call and I'm simply putting the idea out there to generate feedback for his consideration.

Love the bows that people have donated. It shouldnt be all on the bowyer necessarily. I bet if someone paid for all the materials or chipped in more bowyers would volunteer.

If no one wants to step ups...so be it....I' wont guilt anyone into donating whether they get to wright it off and get free publicity or not.

If we wanted to do a pair of vintage travelers, I think part of the fun would be collecting suggestions for what make, model, year, etc. and ideally finding a pair of well-used but solid bows that could be refinished or cleaned up as necessary, new strings, etc.,so several folks could be involved in the process, sort of like hot-rodding a vintage car from your youth.

There is so much about that idea that I really like, but we may need to find a sponsor to help.  I worry about one of us buying a 50 year old bow to pass around, and then someone getting injured in an accident and there be liability concerns.

Bowyers hopefully have insurance for such things.  An individual would be bearing that risk.

Stinks that I think about such things; but it's the world we live in and would have to be addressed inmy opinion.

It would be a lot of fun though

ce, That's a legitimate issue but one that can be dealt with pretty easily. First of all, we would not be selling any product while we are passing it around and can come up with a quick disclaimer that no warranties or assurances are made, that the bows are decades old, used by persons and in ways beyond our knowledge or control, that bows are by design under significant stresses and all bows are at risk for failure that they are offered for use as is, at the users risk, only, etc.,  and with recommendation that they be carefully inspected before stringing and again before drawing and again before shooting...which is what anybody who buys a 50 yo.o bow does, anyway. We can likewise put a similar disclaimer at auction time next year. Folks like Big Jim and RMSG sell used bows every day and hundreds of thousands are sold every year in private sales and some of those blow up the first time a buyer strings them up. I think we can work around that...Ive been a products liability lawyer for 35 years and never let that stop me from buying or selling a used bow.

I would anticipate far more risk of injury arising from the arguments over which bow model, year, etc. For that reason alone, maybe we should stay away from Black Widows.    :scared:

I had a similar idea.  I think there is definitely a possibility to carry on the Hope/Faith tradition if needed.

A couple of old Bears, HH, or Damon Howatts would be a good place to start if needed.

How about a pair of new or old Bear Take Downs , we can buy them ourselves (I'm good for a share for the purchase of them)  who don't love a Bear TD. Just a thought why don't we each put up $100 say 12 guys or gals for each bow so that's $1200 for 12 months of a year for each setup. ( right and left hand bows ) each person that put up the $100 gets the bow for a month or until they make a kill and send it to the next person. For the $1200 each we could get a bow and good case and quiver. Like I said just a thought and I'm good for a $100 on a right handed one and am sure I can get several more in with a few calls.
