KME which one?
« on: June 27, 2016, 11:53:00 AM »
For a single head which KME sharpener would be best? the "knife sharpener" or the actual BHd sharpener????

Thanks

I've only used the BH unit, loved it. If you can use the knife version it may be more versatile.

I use the knife sharpener for my German Kinetic and my Magnus Stinger broadheads.

Call Ron at KME, tell him what heads you are trying to sharpen, and he will tell you which sharpener is best.

Yeah after thinking about it I could use the knife one and use it for my knives?

Gonna use it on cutthroats for the most part. I used file and paper wheels for many years but more control of the KME seems nice. especially since I am at home for the most part.

Thanks yall -

KME with diamond stones and the stropping leather with various micron stropping conditioners is what I use for knives and broadheads. I used to be able to get stuff sharp, but sometimes it took me a while to get there. The above system takes ALL the angle guesswork out of it for me and while it was an initial investment, now going into the second year, it's just touch-up on those that I ground to the angle I wanted last year.

If you're doing any kind of bevel reworking, you're going to want the course diamond stone in your arsenal, otherwise you're going to get frustrated.

I use the BH sharpener on my Cutthroats and Grizzlies.  They are scary sharp.  I use stone, cardboard and leather in that order with great results.

Ron told me the regular small Broad head sharpener when I said I was primarily interested in VPA broad heads....does a great job but not made for knives.

i have both..once the bevel (25*) is set the BH unit makes touch up slick... if you want diff bevel the knife is the bomb...and does knives!!!  get the bh jaws they added to knife unit,  the old diamonds on knife were not as good as the new ones which are incredible.  i got the big new diamonds for the BH sharpener and excellent!!! also the big "red" stones for bh unit.  Huge difference.  Ron just doesn't rest on his laurels

Ray, that is what I want more angle control. I can freehand but sooner or later I start to "round" off the bevel. Might take awhile but it happens.

Doc, I am getting the diamond stone set. Is that the one you speak of?

I got my field knives that I usually touch up in the field with just a folded up piece of buffalo leather that I keep polishing compound rubbed into. Over the years (20??) it is well used and saturated! But after a day's use it will touch up a blade one its own. It will touch up a broad head as well. Sitting around camp I'll touch up BHds and knives just on the leather. Simple easy way to maintain edge.

Just around the house at my shop I want something better than free handing with a file??

Thanks y'all,

J

Lansky was decent concept...KME perfected angle control.  i think the GOLD is the diamond series now....Ron wont sell junk.  availability in USA is an issue and at times he finds better

I have the BH sharpener, and it works fine. Oddly, I can get a knife very sharp on a standard stone, but I don't have the same results with broad heads. I finish up with a leather strop that my grandfather used in his shoe shop over 100 years ago.

Question, I have an older KME knife sharpener with the stones, is it worth upgrading to the diammond hones

Blaine,
If it's working for you now, then no need to upgrade. If you're looking for a less expensive route, just get one of the diamond stones in course if you're working with some hard metal broadheads and want to work a new angle, then switch to your old stones.

I personally like how quickly the diamond stones work compared to the old stones, but that's just my preference.

I went cheap at first and bought the broadhead sharpener and it's swell, but then bought the knife sharpener with the Jewel stick to sharpen my Simmons heads and if I was doing it all over knowing what i know, I'd buy the knife sharpener and the Jewel stick and forgo the broadhead sharpener because your limited with it, only one angle etc..

Yeap they sure did but after buying a KME and previously owing a Lansky I wish I hadn't bought the KME, even after all the positive reviews here. There are better sharpeners out the that takes in the account that most knives aren't flat or parallel  across the surface that the clamp attaches too. Just saying IMHO. Lansky has the same inherent problem.

Ron will quickly tell you thr width of a blade changes the angle,  For me, all issues boiled down quickly to operator error.  Nothing huge, just "devil's in yhe detail'...YMMV   :D
