53# Whip 300 spine shaft?
« on: June 28, 2016, 10:58:00 AM »
Howdy,
I have a 32" draw and my new whip seems to shoot a full length 300 beman ics bowhunter with 350 up front better than any other shaft I can find.It is the same setup I shoot out of my 61lb elkheart.I thought it would be way to stiff. I wonder if my release is so screwed up that the stiff shaft is compensating for it. Any thoughts? I tried the CE heritage 250 and 350 and they were good but most of the time they showed weak. Even with light weight up front. Matter of face the lighter I got up front the weaker they got. Makes no sense.

If it works , don't worry about it .
I have a 45# bow that likes the same arrows as one of my 55# bows .

Carbon arrows spine become much more forgiving the longer the arrow is.  A full length shaft like that will have much more options as one that's cut down to 27 or 28".

I would think you would need more weight up front, but, what the heck. If its tuned its tuned.

Have you shot with a bare shaft yet, just to see what the shaft does?

Thanks for all the responses! Yes my bow is 53# at 32" And the bare shaft flys better than the others I mentioned. My BH flight is also good.I just couldn't believe it I thought I would need a 400.
Thanks again, its reassuring to know I am not the only one that has seen this set up. Sometimes I dont think I know what I am doing.

Do you have any strike plate wear? If not you are probably good to go. If you hit the strike plate with a stiff arrow it can show weak.
I am 62@31 and use 340s with 300 grains up front if I use parallels hafts. Otherwise I simplify and use tapered carbon so there is no fuss with tuning.

I don't have a real long draw, only about 29.5. But my whip (62# at 28") just loves a 34 inch 2419 aluminum with a 225 gr field point. Total arrow weight about 850 grains.

I just got a 66" Whip and am drawing about [email protected]" I'm shooting 400 spine GT with 200gr up front, so with your extra draw I'm not surprised with your arrow with that much weight up front! Sweet bows that's for sure!

I also have a 66" 45# whip classic I draw at 28 and I cut GT Hunter's 500's at 29 5/8 with 175gr-190gr out front. Shoots great for me out to 25 yards, past that I got to use my head.
Odds are with the prepared..

Not sure what Dan is using for strings these days...that can make a big difference in spine required

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

32" draw with 53# I would venture to guess you are about right with that much weight up front. To shoot a CE 250 shaft you are going to need to cut the up front weight by half or more. Maybe down to 145 grains. Life will speed up then and mistakes will be magnified some. Made quite a few arrows for Whips over the years and with the newer HS Whip and skinny strings the performance is pretty darn good!
BTW if you shot a STOS head and brass inserts with your set up even an engine block may be in danger! LOL

Well I have shot it and shot it and shot it and it still works the best. If I plucked it with a bh I see the kick to the left but if still impacts where I want it to. I think I will stick with it. Its probably not perfect but I can't trim arrows I guess it will have to work. Thanks for all the input happy 4th!
