Scent line .
« on: July 18, 2016, 10:38:00 AM »
Many years ago a friend of mine used to use one of those Zebco 808 fishing reels with a heavy braided line .
He would soak the line with deer lure and when he was on stand , shoot an arrow attached to the line where he wanted the sent to be .
This guy was the best deer hunter I have ever known .
So I was wondering if any of you have ever done that or still do ?

I have done all sorts of things and the end result was a lot of work for not much.

I even tied heavy monofilament from my tree to a just past the trail and ran scent rags down it ( unscented tampon, scented with doe in heat or other scent) to get the buck to be busy with that instead of looking for me.  Did it work.... well, yeah but the animal still had to take that trail.

Another idea, used on public land because I can't leave all that stuff out, is to buy small (1/2" to 3/4") wood balls, soak them in scent and shoot them via little slingshot to the trail or scrape.

The very best idea I have ever come up with is to take your best funnel area and put up a fence in the shape of an X right thru it, with the center part ( where your stand is) not fenced.  Then all the deer have to walk past you... right ?

Or, just go hunt the wind and have fun.

Oh, ummm Graps,   it is "scent"

Too funny!

Hey, dont pick on graps word usage! Thats what makes him......graps!

I too quit using scents long ago because of like chuck said, the deer would have to be there anyway to come across it. If they smell it at a distance, they also would smell you....meaning no help. Like ChuckC....I concentrate on funnels, with the exception I've never ran fencing to funnel them. Ive certainly used existing fence. A good tight natural funnel keeps the deer in front of you, and any deer in the area will have to pass by you and most will be in bow range. Every single spot I hunt are in funnels. I wont mess with anything else.

A lot of the time it doesn't  work, but sometimes...be sure you have a shot to the scent.

It is really frustrating to not have a clear shot to a really good buck and have to watch just his nose , eyes and beautiful rack as he sniffs the attractant.  Ask me how I know that sometime.

Never fussed with it, Graps.
I usually hang a cotton ball in a tree and douse it with scent on the way to my blind or stand (downwind) and pay no mind to what's behind me. Or not use anything at all.
As for Smart Phones, they are much like the kids who design them...lots of memory but can't spell their way out of a wet paper bag.

Speaking of cell phones, I was texting with a fellow well known Tradganger while he was hog hunting. He said he shot an 80 pound hog. I was texting with another well known tradganger at the same time and told him that the other guy shot an 80 pounder. But my phone has a potty mouth and reworded  it to " he s#@t and 80pounder. The response i got was "That was one big turd."

I have used an old 35mm camera roll can fill cotton balls and thinks 69 taped to an old bent arrow. When I would get to my stand take out of quiver stick it the ground down wind remove the top and then hunt. Had several small bucks come and sniff but nothing big enough to shoot. When your done put the lid back on it put in my quiver, just more scent if need be and your ready for next time.

Have utilized a multitude of scents and estrus attractants for well over 30 years. Possibly may have had three verified positive responses out of at least 300 applications and a lengthy number of hunts where the buck walked past downwind and responded as if nothing was present.

I save my money these days.

Others may have enjoyed significantly better success.
