160 or 190 grain?..10.7 or 11.3 gpp?
« on: July 29, 2016, 05:39:00 PM »
Hey gang.
Quick question..
Now I KNOW the end decision won't make much a difference.
I'm just curious what you all would do..

49# actual draw weight.
28" actual draw length
wood arrow
VPA 3 blade.
hunting whitetails
I can tune either weight to fly straight.

would you choose a 190 grain head at 11.3 appx gpp?
or 160 grain head at 10.7 appx gpp?

a "why" would be great.

Thanks!

i dont think the .5 gpp spread would make much difference. assuming they all fly the same I would use the 190 grain for the bigger beefier head.

If you are hunting out in the open and might want longer shots then the lighter set up could be beneficial? im not sure how much .5gpp would impact your arrows cast distance.

Go do a bunch of penetration testing and general shooting and choose wich one gives you the most confidence.  :)

I'd stay with the 10.7 gpp. A little faster arrow helps with reaction time of the animal. If you underestimate the distance slightly, the faster arrow will hit closer to the mark.
But: If you plan to hunt in colder temps with thick clothes, your draw may shorten slightly and the 190 grain head will probably make your arrow slightly weaker for the reduced draw length.
This is often overlooked. Shooting clothed like a mummy is not like shooting with a T-shirt in nice temps in the backyard.

It doesn't matter.  The one that flies the straightest on impact has the most influence on penetration, shoot that one, it will have the most penetration.  Penetration is paramount on killing any animal.  8 grains or 15 grains per pound, it doesn't matter, they all work.  If the arrow is flying straight and you put it where it belongs (plutting it where it belong is what most people should worry about), the critter is dead.  Enough said.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Not meaning any disrespect at all, but I have very serious doubts that 95% of trad shooters can shoot consistent enough to realize the very small difference in trajectory, penetration, or any other result I could muster up in my brain. It would take a complete master that can split hairs to tell the difference from the arrows, and human err. You're over thinking this one a bit I think, there just isnt enough difference. Shoot either one.

Thanks for the info guys.
I know there isn't much difference at all.

I was just curious what ya thought.
I'm going to be using one of those heads and just need to decide which one and get it tuned in.
No biggie.

Thanks

Should be golden with either choice provided the BH tipped arrow is well tuned.

For me, the heavier points always seem to shoot better for me.  I generally shoot around 11.5 - 12 GPP with 190-250 gr heads, so I'd pick the 190's.

I would choose the lighter arrow because my brain is programmed for the trajectory of a 10.5gpp arrow.

I would take the one you are the more accurate with at first cold shot

I would weigh all your arrows without points and put the light heads on the heavy shafts and the heavy heads on the light shafts

Pure and simple - whichever one shoots best.
