Shooting with glasses
« on: August 01, 2016, 12:03:00 PM »
I've seen a couple of posts before about shooting with glasses, but I thought I'd share my experience and the new pair of glasses I just received.

I have a pretty low prescription, I don't even legally need glasses to drive, but every bit helps in the woods.  I've been making do for several years hunting with my everyday pair of glasses.  I could never get the contact thing down and since I don't need to wear them everyday, I was always worried I'd have issues in the field.

The only major thing I had to change when I started shooting with my glasses, was turning my head more square to the target.  I was using the nose to feather as a final anchor, but with my head turned that much, I could just barely see the target through the lens of my dominant eye.  If I was off even a little bit, my non-dominant eye would take over and I would start shooting to the left. (right handed, split vision aiming).  I lost the 3rd anchor by squaring my face, but gained much better focus shooting with the glasses.

I finally sprung for a pair of wrap around sunglass frames, with clear prescription safety lenses.  These things are great.  They fit nice and tight to my face.  With my regular pair of frames the string would just touch the bottom of the frame, pushing them up slightly.  Wasn't much of a problem, but every once and a while I'd jostle them out of place.  I also have an improved range of peripheral vision.  Can't wait to give these a try this fall.

You can also note the "modifications" I started making to my hats.  I got tired of either lifting up the brim slightly or turning it around, and took a pair of scissors to the brim.

Thanks Bisch!  I've mostly been a lurker, but hoping to keep contributing more.

Hopefully fixed.  It is working for me on a separate computer where I'm not logged into Tradgang, or google photos where it is stored.  Think I linked to a private version of it the first time.

Fortunately for me, I've been "glasses-free" since having Lasik done in 2000.  Still 20/20.  But if and when I have to go back to them, I'll investigate something like the Crizal lenses.  The biggest problem I ever had with glasses was rain, fog, and steaming up.

After a lifetime of wearing glasses I had, thank God very successful cataract surgery that gave me 20/20 in left eye.  Anyone who goes through loss of vision and the surgery really appreciates their sight.  I no longer need glasses but for protection against sticks, locust thorns, busted nocks/ strings I wear Wiley x Valois when shooting or hunting.  I too use feather to nose and routinely clean the waxy string smudge from my lower lens--- a cheap price to pay for the protection it affords.

I swear I've done this before... I think it's fixed.  Pics are showing up on my wife's phone.  For somebody who works on a computer all day long I should be able to get this right   :dunno:

I do have the Crizal coating on my everyday glasses.  Honestly can't say it's helped with them fogging up in the cold, but it does really help with glare.

My prescription is only -1.0 in both eyes, but that little bit seems to make the difference between seeing a tiny bit of movement in the woods or not.  It hasn't changed in the last 10 years.  I've thought about one of the corrective surgeries, but can't really justify it yet.  And from what I understand, doing it a second time may or may not be viable.  I'd like to keep that option open in case it gets worse later.

I also anchor pretty high and back.  From what I understand it's exactly what the Toelke's teach, I even moved to shooting their 2 under method.  I think that anchor point really exaggerated how much my head needed to turn to touch feather to nose.  I did like it though as it kept my eyes in consistent alignment with the arrow.

Interesting , I've had glasses most of my life . I for the last twenty years have had trifocals and I have no issue at all with shooting .
I can even shoot about as good without my glasses .
Might be because I'm not a gap shooter , I don't need to see the arrow .
I have known some people that have a terrible time with glasses , but I'm just guessing it's because they are not used to them and learned to shoot prior to having glasses .

Started shooting with glasses years ago.

Fortunately, only took some patience, minor form modifications and lower profile glasses. The squaring of the head has proven personally beneficial even when shooting without glasses.

I utilize a hi anchor, parallel cock feather nose tip anchor and split vision. The string does not touch my glasses.

Structure and/or physical design predicates the individualistic possibilities.

I shot for 15 years before getting glasses and had a terrible time adjusting. Another 15 years have now passed and I've learned a few things along the way.

1. Progressive bifocals are blurry if you aren't looking through them straight on. I have lined bifocals specifically for shooting/hunting with very low lines.

2. Nose pads create a hole that I used to accidentally look through when aiming. Plastic frames that sit down on my nose fixed that.

3. I wear a glasses strap to keep them snug to my face for consistent view and feel.

4. I cant the bow more to prevent string contact with the frames.

Shooting with glasses is a pain if you are a new glasses wearer. It took me a few years to sort out all my issues but now it's not so bad.

I have notched my hunting hats for many years. Kind of became a hallmark almost.

I struggle with shooting if I where any kind of glasses as well. It tends to drift me left. Interesting comments here and ideas.

I have been having trouble since I went to progressive bifocals. I was going to try single vision for hunting, but would then have trouble reading map, but really like Red Beastmaster's ideas. I have to really square up my head, maybe I will try another anchor point, also like the fletch as an anchor idea.

Good ideas on this thread.

very nice, same thing for me with sun glasses,
got to have a pair you like wearing around, then a pair that are pure function for working, fishing, shooting bow, protecting your eyes ect.

Like said  before only problem for me is fogging up. Rain doesn't bother because I wear a hat with Bill on it.

Now that I can't do .
I can't shoot with a hat on with the bill up front .
That's why I either wear a stocking hat or my Mad Bomber hat .
Guess we all have something that can mess with our shooting .
