Season Prep Thread (Pic Heavy)
« on: September 25, 2016, 08:07:00 AM »
Well I know the season is almost here for Michigan less then a week now!! I have been shooting and not much has changed in my line up since last year. Thought I would do a thread on pre season prep. Maybe I won't forget something this year LOL. Please chime in on your tips and tricks you have learned through the years.

1. New String--

Well I will be shooting one of my trusty Bear TD Kodiak's again this year. I did get a shorter set of limbs and have been shooting it well so that meant a new string from HCB. Went with red and cedar color to match my riser colors. After shooting it for the last couple weeks I must say I am impressed with the new BCYX and PowerGrip serving Daniel has switched to. I had him add the recurve wraps, tied nock points and some cat whiskers to save me some time.

I really like his new color drop down box for color selection. It lets you know what he stocks and its fun to pick!

We are less than a week away. I have 2 bows set up for the season a Bear Kodiak Hunter and a Bear Kodiak TD.

All broadhead arrows for both bows have been shot multiple times at various ranges and are now razor sharp.

2. New hunting arrows--

I have always made my own arrows in the past, since I was 12. But when I see Gary Halls arrows well.... They just put mine to shame! I mean how long can you drool over those feather splices and cresting works of art and not get a set. I will admit I waited to long. I went with my favorite colors and gave a little direction on what direction I wanted him to go and let him work his magic from there. WOW I think they will improve my shooting because I will not want to miss and loose one.

I like to add a footing to my arrows and found 4" of 2219 to be perfect for my GT 55-75 arrows and bow set up. I cut these off and taper the target/nock side so they pull out easy from the target.

I slide them on before I glue the inserts in.

Then I glue the inserts in the arrows with hot melt and let cool.

Then I slide the footing up to the insert and make a pencil mark around the arrow so I know how far up to put the glue.

Heat the glue up on your heat source (NOT THE ARROW, DUH I KNOW) And I slide the footing down the shaft to the insert and wipe excess glue off with rag. Give the arrow a good push against a hard surface to make sure the insert and footing a seated.

I really like footing my arrows they get my FOC up and I break way less arrows stumping. Plus they are fun to make. I'm saving my golden years for wood arrows and osage bows, LOL.

Marc,
Thats on my list now most heads are still sharp from last here minus a couple that got blood on them!! My back ups are a green stipe and a grayling B riser that in the mail headed my way. It needs some work though. Good thing its a 3 month season...

I have new strings on both my bows this year and they are both shot in. I also shoot in my spares as well. I have never broken a string while hunting but if I don't have a spare you know what will happen.

Getting excited for the Michigan opener next weekend. Put up 3 ladder stands and 1 hang on stand back on Labor day weekend. This weekend I'm checking on them and putting the cushions on the seats, tie on pull up ropes and screwing in hangers. Going to use my Black Widow PSA X with 2016 XX75's tipped with Muzzy Phantom broad heads. Good luck to my fellow Michigan traditional archers and all the traditional archers across this great nation.    :archer:

Congrats on the deer with the TD. A Green stripe is on my want list. I have a Red stripe and two tone now. I picked up a set of Grayling limbs at Denton Hill this year. I really want to get a deer with the Kodiak Hunter this year and it's going out on Saturdays opener.

This is the tool I use to chamfer the OD of the aluminum to help it pull out of the target easier. DONE by the $5 one from Harbor Freight they are junk.

----BROADHEAD PREP----
1. Clean out the inside of the ferrel with alcohol or some other cleaning / de greasing solution. Q tip works great swab until it comes out clean.

The glue on adapter I wipe off then burn clean on the alcohol burner also warming it for the glue.

I then heat up the broadhead and glue and drip it into the ferrel. Then heat up the ferrel and push the adapter into the broadhead.

Good Mix of my favorite heads for the season!

I like to rub some wax on the threads and hold over heat for a split second to even out. This keeps my broad heads and field points stay TIGHT! I hate loose points.

I like to number my arrows so I know if they are flying good or need tweaking.

One quiver full of tree sharks!!! My tree stand quiver

I made this one out of a old Hoyt quiver I had. Didn't come out perfect needed to use half the leather on the inside to allow space for the broad heads 3 tree sharks and she is as full as it gets.
Next one will be better.

Chad, interesting quiver hood. I've been playing around with that very same style with leather but have not got one put together yet. Looks good.
