Finally posting pics of my new bow.  Its 64" nock to nock.  The handle is osage orange sandwiched by bocote, four bamboo lams, one carbon strip, and chechen lams with clear glass.  51# at 28".  Shoots real snappy guys. No shock, and very quiet.  I took it out for the first time today, and drew back on a squirrel.  But it didnt sit still long enough to shoot.

My carpet isnt purple, its just my phone camera. I need to take some better shots. The one against the wall shows the r/d in the limbs.

Went out today and saw two deer, but they didnt stick around long enough for a shot.

On the way out I did some stump shooting, and the river cane arrows I made shot surprisingly well, considering theyre not spine, weight or length matched.

I also decided to get some better shots of my bow, so here they are.

I'm new to trad, so I just have to ask:  is it necessary to use silencers on a longbow, as you have here?

I thought that longbows by their very nature would be pretty silent.  Or is that true only of some designs, but not others?

From what I understand, it just depends on your bow, the string, arrows, and release.  I read here that some guys combination of the afore mentioned list results in a quiet bow, with no silencers. Its just a matter of finding the right combination I guess.

That being said, silencers can be made cheap, and it wont hurt to use them.  If you want a set, let me know and Ill send you some brown wool yarn silencers.

This is 3rd handed, but a noted bowyer was purported to have turned his back on a guy shooting one of this bowyer's new bows and would call out if it was a good hit or not with his back turned!

His claim was that the sound of the release was a clear clue if it was an accurate arrow, as the release was the key to consistent accuracy.

I don't know if it's true that can be but I love to consider such things.. fascinating.

That is very kind of you....thank you for the offer.    

I'm now thinking that possibly it may be reflex/deflex or hybrid longbows which benefit more from the use of silencers.  These types seem to place the string closer to the limbs, where slap could occur, resulting in noise.

Just a guess on my part, though.

If you ever do an accidental dry-fire, you will notice how loud the bow really is.  This is because the energy is all staying in the bow, whereas with a regular shot, the energy goes into the arrow.  So just having an arrow with plenty of weight will quiet the bow down, as it takes more energy to push forward.

Im sure some of the more experienced guys can tell you more, but if you are happy with your set-up, then go for it.

Its the last weekend of squirrel and rabbit season here, so I used that excuse to go out in the woods.  Stalked some squirrels but no shots.  Had a red fox run across the trail in front of me.  No bunnies though.

So I found a good spot to just shoot, shot my fluflu out as a target on the last round, and shot about 40 yards or so.  The first two are the close ones, the other 4 just got worse.  Thats why I stick to shooting just two arrows at a time.  The hill side is very gentle thats why they look so spread out

Who can find the 6th shot?
