Cold Weather clothing issues.. Your opinions on this pullover?
« on: October 10, 2016, 02:09:00 PM »
Hey guys so for the past 10 or so years I've always had a problem when deer hunting with getting cold. I know that if you stand still long enough your gonna get cold. I'm 5'11 and about 150 pounds so there isn't much meat on my bones haha. I've tried lots of things including big down jackets.. Now they do work but then drawing my bow becomes and issue.. and the material is so noisy.

So I think I have come to conclusion for a final layering piece with layers underneath. I'm also wondering if you think that the grey color of this garment will be a problem with concealing me in the woods?? The heavy wool doesen't come in a green.. only the grey that you see. So what do you guys think of it as a final piece for my layering and also the color of it... Here's a link to it.

I would also love to hear how you guys layer yourselves and what you guys have used and do use while cold weather bowhunting!!

I would choose grey or brown over green for a blending in anyway, that looks like it would work great to me.

The Boreal shirt is fantastic, but you could buy two pullovers or a combination pullover and zip up from the Asabells for much less, be just as warm, have layering options, and more options in patterns. Just a thought, but again the Boreal shirt is amazing in and of itself.

I've looked at the Asbell products and they are very nice the shipping costs to Canada make them quite costly as well.. and it just seems that the Boreal is a much heavier wool. Also the sizing options make it a very wierd fit for me if i want to layer on the Asbell wool ones. What are you guys currently layering on those very cold hunts??

I've got the asbell anorak. And I do like it. However even in blanket weight the wind cuts through it pretty easily. I did get the wind blocker vest for it this year, so we will see how that goes.

But honestly I really prefer my cabelas wooltimate pullover with windblocker built in. Its quite a bit warmer, and blocks the wind pretty well. You really don't need much more than a t-shirt underneath it until it gets below 40 degrees.

I've almost transitioned from having a bunch of layers, to having one good base layer, and one good outer layer (with layers built into it). I'm much more comfortable that way, as opposed to layering up so much I feel like the Michelin man.

Granted my opinion is coming from Oklahoma, where its windy, and not overly cold. But I don't think you'd want to be sitting for long periods in a tree with the GFA anorak, windblocker vest, and wool baselayer much below 35-40 degrees...especially if theres any amount of wind or especially precipitation.

If its calm out or you are active then I think GFA's stuff makes a good combo. I sat out this weekend in the low 40's and fairly calm with the vest and the anorak over a cotton tee, and with wet pants from the dew I was just fine.

My 25-40 deg F combo this year for treestand hunting will likely be a first light merino wool baselayer, GFA windblocker vest, and the cabelas wooltimate. If its calm I may where the GFA anorak.

When it is Wyoming cold, I start the layering with capeline undies, layered by a sweater; either an old Army sweater, a Merino, or the Cabelas windproof if it is breezy. On top, I wear Asbell pullovers of one sort or another. I have various wool pants for the bottom half. I am more of a still hunter/spot and stalker than tree stander, so I am moving. Once it is well below zero Farenheit, I look at TG from my couch. I didn't get this old by being stupid.
That anorak that you are looking at appears to be very nice.

The key in cold temperatures is to have a good wind blocking garment within your layering of wool. And the Asbell wool is a bargain !

The solid grey would not be my first choice as it tends to create a "blob" effect. I would try a vest over it just to create a break in the outline. Here in middle Georgia, it doesn't present a problem, because, by the time it is cold enough to need the heavy wool, it is gun season, requiring an orange vest over whatever top garment is worn. (Archers also have to wear orange during rifle season.)

I agree with those who suggest looking at Asbell's stuff, especially plaid patterns. I have 3 of them.

Hmm Great advice!! I love hearing it guys. It's definitely a topic that is a bit shrouded in mystery !! I like the idea of having a good windblocking layer underneath the wool. Asbells stuff does look very nice, I've been browsing it for years!!  I went ahead and ordered the Boreal 90% wool Anorak we'll see how it goes!!!

I have been considering adding an Asbell wool item as a top layer option and trying to decide on a color or pattern. I'm leaning toward the gray based on their comments about it in the last paragraph of their Wool Anorak description: popular color and blends well in a wide range of situations.

Even if the OP chooses another brand check out Asbell's take on gray as an answer to your request of opinions about that color.

And if you are serious about staying warm, the wind block has to be the outside layer of your gear.

When it gets really cold I go with minus 33 merino base layer , then a fleece vest, then a sweater, then my wooltimate pants and vest or jacket.  Love my wooltimate , warm and quiet.

One thing many people fail to realize, is if you layer up with wool,(I use simple heavy wool sweaters, from the GoodWill Store) Then use an oversize (2X,3X?) light cotton    :scared:   Camo shirt, as an outer layer. The cotton shirt makes a VERY effective "windstopper" (tightly woven) and even helps in wet weather!!! The cotton holds the moisture outside, away from your skin, while the wool underneath against your skin, insulates and warms while drying from the inside out!!!
