Safety Harness Help for Daughter
« on: October 12, 2016, 05:18:00 AM »
My 11 Year Old daughter wants to tree stand hunt this year. She is 105 lbs. and 5 Feet.  I believe she is into a Adult Small Size Safety System, any recommendations?

I see HSS has a multitude of models they offer.

Thank you, would like something that has easy system to tie on to top of tree..

Thank you,

My son is approximately the same size and uses the small HSS vest.

If this will be a permanent stand I would suggest a lifeline as well.

The Seat-of Pants harness has a lot of adjustability. I think it would get small enough for a 105 pounder.

I would take her to a store that has them or contact the companies that make them.

I would recommend calling whatever company you choose to give them her physical characteristics prior to purchasing the harness. The company representatives can help you size her harness.

I'm a fan of the rock climbing harness systems over the harnesses that pull on the center of your back.

Should be fairly easy to find a rock climbing harness in her size.

Tree Spider Sola,,women's model or,the youth model. They have a sizing chart under the picture when you click on one of the harnesses $99.00. Check it out at  www.Robinsonoutdoors.com.

Most of the harnesses say to throw em out after like 5 years, so you're gonna be replacing it after a few years whether she grows out or not. I would consider a child size.

But adult small may work.

I've been using the Muddy Safeguard. It's pretty comfortable and they can be had for $80 usually and I have seen sales as low as $50 for the women's (same except the embroidery is pink not orange). It uses a carabiner to connect to the tree strap.

I'm 5'2" and 140# and I have an adult small. Even using it with just a tee shirt and jeans on, I am not even close to the minimum settings on it. It's pretty adjustable. The chest strap may be the limiting factor, I wear a 38S jacket and with just a tee shirt I am somewhat close to the minimum setting. My wife is close to the size of your daughter maybe a few pounds heavier and I suspect she could use my harness.

I think Muddy also publishes the recommended sizing based on height and weight.

I suspect with hunting clothes on an adult small would be good.

Hope that helps.

Last thing, the easiest and safest thing is the HSS Lifeline. Check it out. You connect in at the bottom of the tree, and your strapped in the whole time you climb, and hunt, and only disconnect when you reach the ground. It uses a Prussick knot that slides along on a high strength climbing rope that's tied to the top of the tree. Changed my whole view of treestand hunting. REMEMBER MOST FALLS HAPPEN CLIMBING UP OR DOWN NOT SITTING IN THE STAND!!!

I do the same. Linemens belt is used when putting up the stand and then once up the HSS line that I hang from the back of my belt until I'm up to stand height then gets wrapped around the tree. From then on it's all I use in the stand and getting up and down.

I am looking for a reasonably priced safety harness, the harnesses that came with my treestands are ridiculously hard to manage? I use a climbing safety rope with prusik knot, but I just need a basic harness for hunting and setting the stand? Any feedback is appreciated.

I use HSS and Summit SOP.  Both can be bought reasonably and are much better than those that come with the stand.
