something you can slip 2 pairs of wool socks into.
I wore uninsulated danner pronghorns boots in Wisconsin at -17 degrees. 2 pairs of good wool socks and I was comfortable all day.

I have a cheaper RedBall(don't know if still around) brand of the LL Bean Maine style boot that are lightweight, warm, dry, and comfortable wearing all day. These ones are nylon and Goretex instead of all leather uppers with the rubber boot bottoms. If they ever wear out I'll definitely get another of the same type boot.

Honestly I've found that ANYTHING that isn't tight. I've bought 100 dollar boots and 300 dollar boots. They didn't work because of the simple fact that they were just too tight. You have to be able to have room in there to create some warm air pockets and get a nice big pair of wool socks into as AZ_Longbow sais.

I agree with Talon. They must not be tight, allowing heavy socks to be used with plenty of room.

Strictly personal opinion but I feel "light weight" is a bit over-rated. Some years ago I spent a lot of time in high, rugged country in heavy hiking boots hunting sheep and mule deer, often in cold and snow. They were sized for a lighter wool liner sock and a heavy wool hiker and they were warm, comfortable and I never noticed the fact that they weighed in the 5 pound range.

If you're talking about sitting more than walking, I'd recommend a pair of insulated Muck boots, either the Woody Max or Arctic models.

I have a pair of Keen winter boots that I love. They have primaloft insulation and wool foot beds. They are surprisingly light for their size.

X2. Add super comfortable and good sole traction. With one good pair of Smartwool socks, they keep me comfortable down to around zero, maybe a little below. And I get cold pretty easy.

I am a fan of upland game boots. Light, either in full leather or a leather/nylon combo. Light, flexible crepe-type soles are great. Uninsulated models a 1/2-size larger, or the various levels of insulation. I always got great durability from my favorite, kangaroo leather, when I pounded them in my WV hills.

I've been wearing Muck Woody Max boots for a few years now and can't say enough good things about them. Buy them at least one size larger, and you're set.

I have a pair of Schnee's 12 inch boots that have a liner- they look like LL Beans but have a chocolate brown leather instead of the buckskin color. The comparisons end there. There's arch support, plenty of room inside, and waterproof for sure.
I wear a pair of liner socks and a pair of lightweight wool socks and my feet are good down to 12 degrees so far....without heater packs or heated insoles or anything else.....great boots.
