If your using a "lined" vest under your wool your wool IS NOT INSULATING YOU it's only offering you noise muffling protection. I know I'm not in the wool is king crowd but I swear I use Merino wool as a undergarment. Wool is a awesome material. It's just not the end all that most people seems to think it is after tons of threads promoting it as! Think about this for a minute, how many folks climb MT Everest in totally wool? Then when you consider how wool is NOT windproof and all the wool wearers say keep the wind in your face you got to just laugh to yourself.
Most people get rich by making more money than they have needs, me, I just reduced my needs!

I used to chew about everything, skoal, cope and most any thing else tobacco related until my wife, well that's another story, lol.  Anyway I have dropped more than one load on a deer's mellon when hunting from a tree. Not one alerted.

My buddy had a pet buck that was on the wrong side of a road. He gave me two cigarettes to feed the deer to walk it across the roadway.  It worked.

Deer like tobacco.

Lots of swirling wind in the flatlands of GA and SC.  Killed lots of deer and hogs (hogs are worse than deer by far concerning scent).

Killed a lot of Deer and Hogs wearing wool....so have many of our pioneers before the advent of modern fibers.

What does wool have to do with wind? what does regional location have to do with wind?

deer smell better than dogs, you will never trick them, scentlock, hunter soap, cover scent, (whatever other flavor of the month solution there is), you can not defeat thousands of years of evolution with a man made chemical spray or material.

I'm not trying to cause conflict or be rude, I just dont see the relevance...

Longtoke, I'm not trying to cause conflict from your statement but if we can't trick a deer how do we kill them? You can't tell me that on every deer I've killed the wind was totally in my favor... I mean i try to be conscientious of the wind at all times but if I always played the wind on every area i have permission to hunt there would be many weekends where i couldn't hunt.

Wind entry on ANY fiber depends on the fabric.... the tighter the weave the more wind is prevented from entering the fabric.  Felted wool is probably the best as far as wind n wool as it mingles and fuses the fibers together. But make no mistake, there are other non-felted constructions out there that do a good job.

Also, wool absorbs-holds-and neutralizes odors. And absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet.  Wear cotton socks in freezing temps?.....good luck keeping your toes warm.

One other thing good wool has, a much wider comfort range.  Some man made fibers leave you sweaty and too hot and a few degrees less, chilled to the bone.   A good wool shirt can be worn in temps above 70 and still keep you warm enough down to 50 or less for us warm blooded types.   My Filsen  and my Swani coats last a very long time and with natural lanolin treatments shed rain very well.   I never considered that they may absorb oder so deer can smell less, but I guess it is possible.

Not 'may' or 'posible'...but fact...

Wool is a non-allergenic fiber which does not promote the growth of bacteria or dust mites, or give off harmful emissions.

Wool fiber also absorbs and neutralizes airborne chemicals and odors.

Wool assists in stabilizing the relative humidity by absorbing or releasing moisture during periods of high or low atmospheric humidity.

Wool is resistant to compression due to the physical nature of the fiber's "natural crimp". Wool has millions of coiled molecules, rather than artificially induced sinoidal waves which exists in man made fibers.

Wool is an excellent insulator of temperature and sound.

Wool ages gracefully and does not "ugly out" like man made fibers.

Wool is naturally soil resistant.

Wool is naturally flame retardant and is specified for those installations with the most stringent flammability regulations.

Wool is a natural, renewable resource, produced using environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and safe methods.

Wool is recyclable and biodegradable.

Wool has superior long term appearance retention due to the fibers natural resilience.

Wool has non-slip and non-abrasive characteristics, making it a safe walking platform.

Wool has excellent dying characteristics.

Wool is more cost effective in the long term.

These are just a few of the many supreme attributes of wool over man made fibers. An investment in wool is an investment in nature, comfort, reslience, practicality, style and beauty beyond compare.

For decades man has tried to discover a fiber that will outdo and outperform the fiber made by God in every realm..
. so far it hasn't worked.

I mostly still hunt , which is very slowly moving through the woods after you get in a deer area or elk. I mean very slow. I like the smell of fresh cedar and fir so the first cedar or fir tree I come to I take a small branch and rub it all over myself. I then take a few of the tips and chew them. Much better for me than Skunk Screen. But nothing works better as a cover scent than Skunk Screen.
God bless, Steve

If you think for one second that your wool is not insulating you because you're wearing a vest just sit out in the weather of about 30 degrees for an hour in such attire and then take the wool outer layer off and see if you were being insulated or not.

RedMan Golden Blend.
I used to hunt occasionally with a guy who smoked cigarettes and an occasional cheap cigar (Swisher Sweets) like a coal train in his stand. He killed deer regularly. And he was VERY good at hunting the wind. If the wind switched on him, he would get down from his treestand and move to another one or hunt off the ground if necessary to keep the wind in his face. He would always keep saying "keep that wind in yer face young man and you'll kill`em."

I use Fisherman's Friend for my breath.  I use wool for body odor control.  Animals smell us for our "animal" scent that we give off through our glands.  One of the most likely culprits is our armpit odor.  I tend to not have BO but wool hides some of that. Another huge scent area is right behind our ears. We tend to not notice because the smell is behind our noses. But mark my words, deer pick that smell up really well.  Don't believe me? Take your finger and wipe the crease behind your ears and take a whiff.  Wash any part of you that has a crease: crotch, crap crack, armpit, back of ears, and back of knees.  You are making scent 100% of the day so there's no getting over or around the scent issue.  Play the wind and play the wind well.  I hunt with my 76 year old father in law who farts, has rancid BO, uses fabric softener soaked clothes, and has bad breath.  I can actually smell him from the ground when he is up in a tree.  The old guy gets a deer every year.  He kills deer from an average of 15 yards away every year.  Why?  He knows how to use the wind. That's how.  I use Copenhagen when I am in my treestand or when I hunt from the ground.  My main scent control technique is to use wood smoke.  I started to use this method by accident. I went to start smoking a brisket on my Treager pellet smoker before a hunt 5 years ago and ended up smoking myself and my hunting clothes.  I decided to hunt that morning anyway even though I smelled like Treager competition blend.  Not only did I smell sexy, but I had 6 does all within 10 yards of me while hunting on the ground between a tight cluster of red oaks.  I did not get a shot offf because there were too many eyes but I did learn that smoke helped mask my scent.

Have used Copenhagen and Shoal Wintergreen on virtually every hunt in the past 30+ years.

Have used wintergreen nearly exclusively the past 12 years. Have Jose Wales'd many a buck beneath my stand. Have Jose Wales'd many times before shot.

A perfection buddy of mine constantly drilled me about me dipping in the stand. We hooked up with Myles Keller in the later 80's and I noticed he was dipping Shoal Wintergreen. I directly inquired if he dipped in the stand. His reply...'EVERY HUNT'!

I am passionate in my prep yet have never found dipping to emit the slightest hint of an alarming signal.

gargling with hydrogen peroxide works very well. do it just prior to you heading for your stand and you will be surprised how well it works
