KSdan that looks similar to a place I used to hunt. Shot a deer at 4 yards as it walked across that small opening. Sat in the water in a pothole one time to shoot my first spike at 6 yards. Might have to get back at that ground hunting!

By the looks of it I'm guessing that it was earlier in the season. It would be great to have that much cover around here now.

Yup- mid september. That blind/spot of brush is next to a 1/4 section slough of grass and water. Those deer live in those sloughs. No trees to speak of- everything is off the ground there. The deer was a gift on my last night there.

I am 6'4" 215#. Yes- huge buck- one of the biggest/lankiest bodies I have ever seen. That was september- I just wonder what he would have looked like in Nov. during the rut with a swollen neck. He has had the stamina to make it over 250yds with a pure double lung shot (yes I even did an autopsy and centered BOTH lungs) Amazing critter.

I have to ask???? For those of you that suggested putting the brush behind you..how do you get drawn if you don't have something in front? I had 2 mature does at about 17 steps last evening with nothing between them and me but air. Never could find an opportunity to get drawn. Thanks in advance.

I could see in your first color picture that your face sticks out like a sore thumb even though you are wearing a mask.
I wear glasses when I hunt so I have trouble with masks fogging up my glasses. I've switched to a 1/2 mask and color the rest of my face with burned cork. I've had a small flock of turkes inside of 5 yards away from where I'm sitting in a blow down.
By the way I am using the TCS Ghilly from Cabelas.
I also carry a small squeeze bottle with unsented talk powder in it to check the wind.

I noticed the face also....do you have the face mask pulled below your nose???

Mudd...if hunting trails I prefer cover behind and pretty open in front..idea being I'm hoping to get a quartering away shot at deer moving down trail...hunting food source, I like to also have some cover in front. I haven't been having much luck with the deer reading the rules however.

Mudd...good question, here is how I do it.
I stay alert, when I see deer heading my way I get into my "ready position". That is I put the lower limb of my bow rested on the top of my boot. I keep my bow right in front of me and my elbws in. As the deer "commit" to coming in my shooting lane, I raise my bow, again be sure to keep your elbows in. DON'T LET THEM BREAk THE PLANE OF YOURSIDES. Lastly, I draw, again keeping the elbows in as much as possible. This has worked for me many times, and I have had deer stand at 10 yards and watch me come to full draw on them with nothing between us but air. Having good camo, wind in your face, and good cover behind is the key, as well as moving slow and keeping your elbows and arms in. I should add that the deer I am hunting are NOT pressured. Oh and you can get away with some movement if deer are moving, especialy if they are trotting. They just don't seem to pick up on movement nearly as well in this situation. Another thing I have found that really helps is if the wind is blowing strong and the cover behind you is moving around a lot, you can get away with TONS of movement as well. If things are perfectly still it's more difficult.

Your set up looks great to me. I was just pointing out that your face stuck out. I just thought that I'd point this out and offer a tip I use for the sake of maybe helping some one out. I understand that your pics were staged quickies just to show us. Your set up is simmilar to my oak blow down I've been sitting in this season.

James the biggest factor and I found out the hard way is to paint your face or get a face mask. Breaking up your outline and the ASAT does a great job is perfect. The only thing I would do is have something behind me to break it up even more. When you move, move slow, use your eyes, try to be like and Owl.Last Saturday afternoon I had two does that had no clue who or what I was. I was in a tree stand but I wear a plaid shirt and original faded out Tree Bark pants, with a face mask. A fawn and her year and a half old momma.They didn't even stomp at me. They walked around me relaxed for what seemed like forever.

Made some improvements to the setup, and sat in it again this evening. Didn't get busted this time. Two does and a yearling came into view about the time I was considering heading in. I waited for an opportunity to draw as they milled around for a bit, but it never came. It seemed like they were taking turns watching out while the others were searching for food (I guess). If one had it's head behind a tree the others were in the open. Sheesh! Their tactics work really well. One doe offered a good broadside shot, but by that time I had to concede that it was too dark. So round two goes to the does again. At least I didn't get busted
straight away this time, and I like to watch deer up close. Hopefully a lone buck or doe will come by again before Nov 15th.

This time of the year when there's does you always have to think a buck is lurking close by too.Having six eyes looking is always tough. Not to change the subject a few years back during winter bow in Jersey I had a herd of 7 or 8 does practically under my tree .Boy was Bucky POed at me for not shooting but I just couldn't just too many eyes watching me.[The killer hangover didn't help either]
