Paint/glue combos for carbons
« on: December 31, 2016, 08:09:00 AM »
what paint do you use for adding a cap or cresting on carbons and what glue will hold feathers to that paint?  I have had feathers come off of paint before, but use fletchtite directly on carbons with good results.
Also any tips on prep ie do you need to prime or clear coat...

Hoping to find the right paint at local hardware rather than buy the expensive cresting paints.

Biathlonman,

Is there anything you do before you spray on the rustoeum?  I guess you clean it with alcohol first...

Does it also work for Aluminium?
Cheers
Alex

You'll likely get lots of answers here.  I can say after 100's of arrows, I've yet to have Gorilla Super Glue fail with any feather, vane, arrow material, paint, or wrap.

I've had failures personally with Fletch Tite & Platinum, various other brands of super glue, and I detest Fletch tape.

I use bohning lacquers mostly all the time. I have tried rustoleum and other oil based paints but the problem I had is since they are oil based they would separate in my containers and thicken up then Id had to add a ton of mineral spirits to thin. That's the only downside. Also when I'm done dipping and cresting I use a Sherwin Williams water based poly as a coating. It adds gloss and protection from smearing. I used to use only platinum to fletch with now I use gorilla super glue. I don't have to let my arrows sit for 30 minutes and its a better hold. AND it doesn't smear my paint like some other glues. Hope this helps

Yes, lots of ways that work. I cap paint GT Trads for a friend I make arrows for. I use Rustolem or Krylon for plastics like outdoor furniture. I crest with acrillic paints from hobby store. I then use a foam brush and waterbased polycrillic clear to protect the crest. Only one thin coat works for me.
My glue of choice these days is Saunders NPV glue.

Jonathan is that regular gorilla super glue or the gel? I see they have both.  What is set up time during fletching and cure time afterwards?

I use the regular (blue cap) as its not runny like other super glues.  Set up time is nearly instant, but I'll generally leave the clamp in place for a couple of minutes.

Thaks Biathlonman,

I'll give it ago... I have some aluminiums and fibrglass arrows here, which are terribly dark...

I'll post a picture of when I am done.
