Future Osage Bows??
« on: January 02, 2017, 11:58:00 PM »
So, the gentleman who rents his farmhouse to my brother had this log hanging from a tree in the back yard. Turns out its a good sized Osage log he was drying and saving for his nephew who lives in Montana.  My brother mentions I've been on the look out for some good Hedge,  and his landlord says I should come out and I could have 1/2 if I helped split it.  So Sunday I showed up with wedges and a maul and we got it done.  I need to split it down further, but Im guessing I should be able to get at least 4 good staves.  Now I just need to break out my selfbow books and videos and bone up on what I'm doing.

I really don't want to waste good osage trying to learn on my own, I need to locate someone nearby in Illinois that knows what they are doing.

It was 60+ degrees yesterday,  so I spent a couple hours breaking down my Osage log into smaller staves.  Hopefully I can get a working bow out of one of them?

Wow , do those look nice and straight .
I'm guessing that there's some nice bows there .

Dang good find. When I lived in Missouri there were a lot of hedge that had trunks that looked like that but here in Texas they are few and far between

Most you find around here are crooked and twisted.

Your lucky with that one.

Shows us your bows when they are done.
I like wood bows. They fit my style and mentally simple self

Great find!  looks like you have plenty of wood to learn on. Don't be afraid to jump in head first. I have never worked with it but I hear osage is a wonder wood. Take it slow and post tiller shots as you go on the bench. You will get lots of good advice and feedback. the main thing with selfbows is go slow.

Make some shavings!

Good luck! My grand father's farm has a few Osage in a tree row and always wanted to do what you're doing. Keep posting pics of your progress, it may motivate me to give it a try.

How bout you send me one of those staves.
I'll cut a bow out and send you the shavings so you can see what to remove from your stave.
