Morrison Max 4 limbs
« on: February 05, 2017, 09:25:00 AM »
I just got a pair of Max 4 limbs from Bob this week. I am primarily a bowhunter and have had a 17" Gen I DAS riser from Dave's second run of risers. It is my go to riser. I also have a Dalaa riser of the same dimensions and length. The Max 4's I got are shorts and make a 58" bow...my favorite hunting bow length...not too short nor too long. Over the years I have shot Winex, XQ-1's, Hoyt and Border limbs. The Max 4's out shoot all of them. For the past two years I've had Max 2's and they are wonderful but the Max 4's have to be the best limbs I have ever shot. They are 46# @ 26" and give me 50# @ 28". I am shooting Axis 400 shafts, 200 grains up front footed at 29" length. Sting is a 10 strand 8190F endless that I make myself. Once I got the tiller at zero/even I put the setup (Dalaa riser) on my bow scale and got the 46# @ 26"...gave me 50# @ 28". The next step was to set the nocking point which I do with a bare shaft. No difference from the Max 2 limbs on the DAS riser, which are 54# @28". Then I determined what the best brace height was. The string I put on gave me a bh of 6.5". I shot that for a few ends and the bow seemed like it could be quieter so I raised it to 7" and finally found that 6.75" gave me the best feel (cream puff release) and the best bare shaft flight at 20 yards. Feathered arrows grouped better than I have done in many years and I haven't shot a bow since Nov. Speed (don't have a chrono) left all other bows I have shot in the dust. The limbs are absolutely stable and quiet. Zero hand shock which left me not wanting to quit shooting. The limbs are velvet smooth to draw and the release, as I have said, is cream puff. Just a joy to shoot and so easy to tune. All that remains is to shoot more so my form is more consistent and I think I may need to tweet my plunger a bit til I get the bare shafts shooting exactly like my fletched arrows. If hunting season was still on I would not hesitate to take the bow out in the woods right now. If you want to buy US and get the best limb around then you need to check out the Max 4's. Best limbs I have ever shot. I like them so much I am trying to figure a way to get a set for Laura who is shooting super short Max i's. Just so you know, I have shot Border Covert Hunters, actually shot J. Parnee's first CH at the Muzzy stump shoot, and i have to say, Bob's limbs are as good if not better than the CH's I have shot. Cannot honestly say anything about the Hex 7.5 limbs as I have not shot them, but for me, I think I have found the best limbs made in the US for my needs and shooting style. I have only had the limbs for a week so do not have pics. Haven't decided to keep them on the Dalaa or put them on the DAS...time will tell.

BTW, I turned 73 last Nov. and have had a bow in my hands since I was 8. I have shot many bows in my life, and although my statements above are very subjective, I believe that in time, in other people's hands who have the technology, my feelings will be substantiated.

Nice limbs Bill...I was wondering about the Max 4's...didn't think any could get better than the Max 1's. I'm shooting a Morrison phenolic riser, and Border 6.5's...very fast, silent, vibration free with the FMJ...29.5", 200gr broadheads.
And you're right about being so smooth.
Now...does Bob make them, or are they made for him at Border?

Thanks for the review Bill, they sound like a great limb, on my short list of limbs to try. Going to take a while to save up that much coin.

I have a pair as well.

My set up is also a 58".  My draw length is 29.5" and they are as smooth as anything I've shot.

I keep hearing great things about these DAS risers.

What is so special about them?

Bob: Bob makes the limbs in house. He is now on to his Max 5's. He sent my wife a set of super short Max 5's to try but doesn't want to promote them until he's had time to see how they stand up to a lot of use.

Dan: The Das risers were the first hunting risers that accepted ILF limbs. The attachment is different, however, and uses a small bolt to hold the limb in place instead of the slide in system of a typical ILF. 3 Rivers bought the DAS system from Dave Soza who designed it and if you need a visual check out the 3R catalog or check out the website.

Bill,

do you prefer the DAS over ilf?

I am not Bill but prefer the das bolt system, 1) Limbs don't pop off when bow is unstrung in car or on my back riding my bicycle down trails, 2) no moving parts when bolt tightened.

The DAS system is best, imo. The limbs stay attached to the riser and is much like a 3 piece take down when unstrung. You still have all the advantages of ILF adjustability. Bob Morrison can make his bows with either DAS or ILF.

Bill, when I look on 3 rivers site I only see Daala risers. Is this the DAS riser with a different name or are they 2 different risers?

3Rivers bought the DAS design from David Soza. It's the same riser with minor cosmetic changes. This year you can get a Dalaa riser in ILF or DAS connection hardware.

I know it's early but would like to see those limbs on the new Hoyt riser. A question, are the limbs better on one riser than another? I see 3R uses Zipper limbs for high performance.

Bill thanks for the heads up on Bob being able to make his metal risers set up with DAS plates. Been looking for a good 19" metal riser and now I think I have found it. That and the max 4 or maybe the 5 limbs sounds like a pretty sweet setup.

I was wondering about the Satori riser as well. Would love to see how comparable these limbs would be?

They have foam cores with carbon back and belly.  The carbon  Bob uses does not like compression so there is a very thin layer of fiberglass under the carbon on the belly. On the limbs I have it is red in color and looks pretty sharp.

I ask because I had the old carbon foam limbs blew up on me, and I said, never again !

Must add, while it shot, it was great.

My Morrison Cheyenne has carbon limbs with a foam core. Those limbs shoot very well in my opinion. For sure they are not as quick as his newer limbs, but they are great limbs.

I am anxious to see some more reviews on the Max 4s.
I had a really good group going... until I shot the second arrow.

My best bows are the ones someone else didn't want.

Agree with you Lefty4. I have a set of the older foam core carbon limbs and they are fantastic. Can't imagine how nice these new ones could be.
