1/2" arrows
« on: March 05, 2017, 11:20:00 PM »
I was just for the heck of it playing around with a 3/8 poplar dowel that happens to be in the spine range for my bow 23/64 point fit on it just fine and managed to cram it into the taper tool(had to cut a self nock though since nocks didn't fit.

I'm kinda interested in building some 1/2 arrows for the heck of it. I can cut a self nock but anyone know how to taper them for points? Seen manufactured 1/2" points but anyone know of a jig to taper them or will I have to make one?

Make a 11 degree taper board with a stop block on the end and hold it up against a disc sander or a belt sander on it's side.

That is a good idea.

OH but I did find that 3R sells 1/2 ash war arrows already point tapered. Sent them an email if they would be able to spine and weight match them for me to see if I can even shoot them out of my bow.

Gonna use the atlatl point and will just have to play with the length to bare shaft I suppose. (might even try to weld some blades to the point).

Oops.  I got the nock and point taper angle mixed up.  You would want a 5 degree point taper.  Nock taper is 11.5 degrees. Looks like the problem's already solved.

You may want to do a search for war bows. There are groups in England that shoot 100# plus bows and 1/2" arrows. I would think they have suppliers of points.

I don't think spine is necessary with war bow arrows. When you shoot 100 yds or more the arrow has plenty of time to straighten out.
I would think you would have a hard time finding a 1/2" shaft that you could get the spine down to 70#@28".

There is no need for 3/8" or 1/2" diameter wood shafts with the bows you have listed.
Waste of time. Dowels are not to be used for arrows for a reason. Grain orientation is not existent. Even if you spine them, this is  static test that has nothing to do with the dynamic part the arrow will have to go through when actually shot.
Buy some 23/64" Douglas Fir Shafting and you should be fine, or make a round dowel maker jig with a block of wood and a router. Pretty simple.
